Molestation, Theft, Assault: Criminal Cases Against Kolkata Rape Accused Manojit Mishra Revealed
Last Updated: Manojit Mishra, the main accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case, has a long history of criminal complaints, including assault, molestation, theft, and vandalism. Hours after it was known that Kolkata rape accused Manojit Mishra had earlier attempted to murder a student and had thrashed a cop, several other cases that were earlier registered against him have come to the fore. The list of other cases against the prime accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case suggests that he has been a repeat offender. In 2017, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Mishra was assaulting and threatening a person. In July 2019, a complaint was lodged against him at the Gariahat Police Station in Kolkata, accusing him of tearing off a female student's clothes at the South Kolkata Law College. On December 31, 2019, Mishra, after attending a party at a friend's house, had allegedly stolen a music system and some expensive items. A complaint in this regard against him was lodged at the Haridevpur Police Station. In 2022, a woman from Kolkata's Swinhoe Street had filed a molestation complaint against Manojit Mishra at the Kasba Police Station. In 2024, he was accused of assaulting a college guard and was also accused of vandalism on the college campus, according to a police complaint. In 2025, another complaint against him mentioned that he had thrashed a cop. In the latest, the DNA samples of the three accused in the Kolkata law college gang rape case were collected on Monday as a part of the investigation of the crime. The police also suspect that the torture of the 24-year-old woman was pre-planned. The three arrested accused – alumnus Monojit Mishra and current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed – were taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where their body fluid, urine and hair samples were collected for forensic examination. The first-year student of South Calcutta Law College in the city's Kasba area was gang-raped allegedly by the three on the evening of June 25. A team of doctors extracted the samples from the accused, and the process lasted for nearly eight hours and were sent to the forensic examination. Sleuths of a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) have prepared a list of over 25 people, mostly students of South Calcutta Law College, who were present at the institution on June 25. Meanwhile, the state education department on Monday recommended the suspension of Mishra from the position he was holding as a contractual employee of the South Calcutta Law College. First Published:

TMC pulls up 2 netas over rape remarks
KOLKATA: Trinamool on Sunday show-caused MLA Madan Mitra and censured MP Kalyan Banerjee for controversial remarks on the alleged gang-rape of a student at a Kolkata law college last week even as its slugfest continued with BJP-led opposition over women's safety in Bengal less than a year after the rape-murder at RG Kar hospital. TMC president Subrata Bakshi sent the notice to Mitra, instructing him to respond within three days over his "unsolicited, unnecessary, and insensitive comments that severely damaged the party's image". Assembly polls are due in Bengal next year. Mitra had remarked Saturday that women should not go to a "closed college if someone calls" - comments that were seen as downplaying the gravity of the rape in which four accused have been arrested. This includes Monojit Mishra, the prime suspect with links to TMC's student wing. Banerjee had also made a controversial statement, asking on Friday "if a friend rapes another friend, how will govt authorities provide protection in such cases?" TMC distanced itself from both comments, saying they were personal opinions of Mitra and Banerjee and the party did not agree with them in any way. A two-member National Commission for Women team on Sunday visited South Kolkata Law College, where the alleged gang-rape occurred on June 25. The team, led by Archana Majumdar, was not allowed into the crime spot, nor was videography permitted.

The growing differences between Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders went public after TMC MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra engaged in a war of words over the gangrape of a law student at South Kolkata Law College. Banerjee also hit back at Mahua's 'anti-women' charge against him, saying she has broken up a family and married a 65-year-old guy. "Mahua Moitra has come back to India after one month and 15 days after completing her honeymoon. After coming back to India, she has started fighting with me! She accuses me of being anti-woman. What is she? She has broken up a 40-year marriage and married a guy of 65 years. Did she not hurt the lady?" Kalyan Banerjee said. Banerjee's scathing remark against Moitra came after she termed the TMC MP's comments on Kolkata law college gangrape "disgusting." How did the latest flare-up start? Banerjee, while reacting to the gangrape in Kolkata earlier this week, had said, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend?" While cautioning women to remain cautious of those with 'dirty mindsets,' he had questioned if police should be deployed to schools. "The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever," the TMC said in a post on X. Mahua Moitra, who previously had a public spat with Kalyan Banerjee, took a 'misogyny' jibe at the MP while sharing the TMC statement. "Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them," Mahua Moitra posted on X. The war of words between the Trinamool MPs is seen as a cause of concern for the Mamata Banerjee government as the assembly elections are just months away. The BJP has also drawn a TMC connection with the accused, claiming the prime suspect, Manojit Mishra, is associated with the ruling party, a charge Mamata's party has categorically denied. So far, the Bengal police have arrested four people, including three accused, in the gangrape case. The police have also collected the evidence from the law institute and also obtained CCTV footage that corroborates the victim's claim of gangrape.
