Paralympic athlete visits South Lakes special needs school

Children at a special needs school in the South Lakes had a visit from a paralympic athlete earlier this month. Bleasdale School in Silverdale welcomed Paralympian Azaz Bhuta MBE, who represented Team GB in wheelchair rugby in the 2016 and 2020 Paralympic Games. Advertisement The school caters for children and young adults aged 2-19 years, with profound and multiple learning disabilities, severe learning difficulties, and/or a diagnosis of autistic spectrum condition. Higher level teaching assistant Anna Hodkinson said: 'The pupils, staff and governors took part in different physical activities. It was great to see everybody getting involved, laughing and smiling. 'We had sensory circuits- balancing bean bags on our head to go round cones. We had timed circuits- one minute of press ups, spotty dog, star jumps and mountain climbers. To finish the session, we played wheelchair basketball, which brought out some positive competition between us!' The day ended with every child taking a picture with Mr Bhuta to remember the visit, alongside a signed photo of him.

Twelve drivers arrested in five days in new crackdown

A dozen people have been arrested for drink and drug driving, as police target offenders in a rural area. Cumbria police said the arrests were made in the Eden area in the last five days. Ten drivers were found under the influence of drugs and two above the legal alcohol limit. "Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the 'Fatal Four' - which are the four main behaviours which cause death or serious injury on the road network alongside speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt," a spokesman for the force said. They added the majority of the people arrested were local residents and there would be more road patrols in Eden and the South Lakes. The force said: "Officers will continue to hold those who are putting other people in danger to account." Follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Jordan Scott cements his legacy at South Lakes with another state title

RICHMOND — When South Lakes returned to VCU's Siegel Center with a chance to repeat as state champions Saturday, it didn't bring back many players who received meaningful minutes in last year's Virginia Class 6 final. A Seahawks team flush with talent and depth finally won its first state title last year and accomplished something previous South Lakes teams, even those led by Hall of Famer Grant Hill, could not. Despite losing 11 players to graduation or transfer, the Reston program brought back Michigan State signee Jordan Scott, an emerging forward in Merrick Rillstone and a tight-knit group looking to reach the summit again.
