Prayers are pouring in after a "horrific" train crash outside of Chicago took five lives on Wednesday evening heading into Thursday morning. A train and a vehicle carrying five people collided in Gary, Indiana on Wednesday evening. The South Shore Line eastbound train 133 was approaching the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street, when a vehicle traveling southbound went around the train gates and onto the track. It was struck by the oncoming train, killing all five people inside of the vehicle. Prayers are pouring in for the friends and family members of the victims. South Shore Line President Mike Noland issued a statement. "Putting aside the fact we always want people to be extremely careful around trains and train tracks and to expect a train on a track at any time - there is a tragedy when five human beings are lost and our hearts go out to the family of the loved ones who experienced loss in this accident," Noland said. CBS News had more: According to South Shore Line President Mike Noland, the train with 32 passengers was approaching the intersection of US 12 and 7th Street when a vehicle with five occupants traveling southbound on 7th Street went around the gates and into the train's path. The Gary Police Department confirmed all five people inside the vehicle died. The identities of the victims were not released as of Thursday. Prayers are pouring in for their friends and family members. "Prayers and condolences to their families," one fan wrote. "Heartbreaking loss. RIP," one fan added. "This happens often. Collision involving train, vehicle disrupts South Shore Line service in Gary, Indiana
A collision between a train and a vehicle disrupted the South Shore Line in Gary, Indiana late Wednesday night. The South Shore Line said at 11:10 p.m., eastbound train 133 was stopped just west of Miller Station after the crash. The South Shore Line did not specify what kind of train was involved in the crash. But the line said train traffic would be halted in the area while crews assess the situation. A Purdue Extension Master Gardener Basic Training Course will be offered for residents of Lake County and surrounding areas from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays Aug. 15 through Dec. 5 at the Lake County Office, 2291 N. Main St., Crown Point. The Course is a volunteer training program designed to increase participants' knowledge on a wide variety of horticultural subjects. In turn, participants represent Purdue University as volunteers sharing their knowledge and service in educational gardening activities within their communities. Materials and expenses for the series of classes cost $190 per participant including a spiral-bound manual; $215 for a spiral-bound and digital manual. In the morning, two westbound passenger extras will operate ahead of existing trains. Extra westbound trains will depart at Carroll Avenue at 7:24 and 8:27 a.m. In the afternoon, two eastbound passenger extra trains will provide additional service for riders leaving Chicago. The eastbound extras will serve Millennium and Van Buren St., run non-stop to Hegewisch and make all local stops terminating at Carroll Ave. These extra trains will not serve Museum Campus, 57th Street, Hudson Lake or South Bend. Extra eastbound trains will depart from Millennium Station at 3:20 p.m. and 4:57 p.m. As a reminder, the South Shore Line reserves the right to remove disorderly passengers. Alcohol is prohibited on all trains on Sunday. Please remember glass bottles are prohibited at all times. South Shore Line fares from Indiana to Chicago increasing July 1
A previously approved fare increase takes effect on the first day of July for riders on the Indiana commuter train. It is the first fare increase in seven years, the agency said. Fares are increasing 10% rounded to the nearest quarter. So, for example, a one-way ride from Hegewisch to Zone 1 will increase from $6.25 to $7, and to Zone 2 from $5.50 to $6.25, or from South Bend to Zone 1 will increase from $14.25 to $15.75. Click here to see a full listing of new fare costs for single rides and multi-ride packs and passes. The South Shore Line said as part of the increase, they are enhancing discounts on multi-ride tickets for frequent travelers. A 10-ride ticket discount will go from 5% to 10%, and a 25-ride ticket discount will go from 10% to 20%. A monthly ticket comes with 33% savings based on a 21-day work month, the agency said.
