Adelita Grijalva wins Democratic primary to replace her father in US House, CNN projects
Adelita Grijalva will win the special Democratic primary in Arizona's 7th congressional district, CNN projects. Grijalva, a former county supervisor, is the daughter of the late Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva, who represented the district for two decades before his death in March. She'll be favored to win the Sept. 23 general election in this heavily Democratic district. Grijalva defeated state Rep. Daniel Hernandez and 25-year-old activist Deja Foxx. Arizona's 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of Tucson and most of the state's southern border with Mexico, has been without representation since March, when Raul Grijalva died due to complications from cancer treatments. The late congressman and former Congressional Progressive Caucus chairman was first elected to the House in 2002. Adelita Grijalva entered the race as the front-runner and garnered the lion's share of endorsements in the contest, including support from both of Arizona's US senators as well as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She also benefited from her family's longstanding recognition in the district, saying she would continue her father's legacy. Like her father, Grijalva served on the Tucson Unified School District governing board and the Pima County Board of Supervisors before running for Congress. She pushed back on her opponents' efforts to frame her as the establishment candidate, saying that she applied for and earned her endorsements from various groups and has her own record of advocacy work, including running diversion programs while working at Pima County's Teen Court.

Trump administration seeing record-low border encounters: Homan
President Trump's border czar Tom Homan said Tuesday the administration saw a historic number of low encounters at the border. 'In the last 24 hours the Border Patrol encountered a total of 95 illegal aliens across the entire southern border. That is the lowest number EVER recorded,' Homan wrote in a statement on the social platform X. He said none of the immigrants was released after being apprehended while lauding the Trump administration for working to create the 'most secure border' in the nation's history. 'To continue this great work and make it more permanent, we need the Big Beautiful Bill passed so we can finish the job, to include the biggest deportation operation the American people voted for,' Homan wrote on Tuesday. 'God bless the men and women of CBP and ICE. President Trump is the Game Changer,' he added. The House-approved spending package is expected to add $4 trillion to the national debt and provide the border with additional manpower from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Currently, the bill is awaiting a final vote in the Senate but remains battle-tested with concerns from Republican and Democratic lawmakers regarding Medicaid work requirements outlined in the legislation. Trump's Fast and Furious Second Term Racks Up Wins — and Risks
Donald Trump's second presidency is turning into a white-knuckle ride — the kind that gets to its destination in double-quick time, provided there's no accident on the way. When a sleep-deprived Congress approved Trump's budget megabill on Thursday, it set the capstone on five furious months back in the White House. In that time the president has thrown up a tariff wall, slammed shut the southern US border, and upended everything from foreign policy to higher education — much as he'd promised to do.

Stephen Miller Spirals After Judge Shuts Down Trump's Asylum Ban
Trump adviser Stephen Miller is up in arms after a federal district court judge dealt a significant blow to Trump's immigration agenda Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruled unlawful Trump's day-one proclamation shutting down the right to claim asylum at the southern border on the dubious grounds that an 'invasion' is occurring there. In response, Miller claimed that Moss, an Obama appointee, is a 'marxist judge' attempting to 'circumvent the Supreme Court.' Quote-tweeting that post, Miller added, 'The West will not survive if our sovereignty is not restored.' In his 128-page ruling, Moss said that Trump's proclamation asserted 'sweeping authority' that far exceeds the powers he legally possesses under the Constitution and the Immigration and Nationality Act. And the Trump administration's 'appeal to necessity cannot fill that void.' Contrary to Trump's arguments, Moss wrote, the president does not have 'the unilateral authority to limit the rights of aliens present in the United States to apply for asylum,' nor does he have the 'authority to adopt an alternative immigration system, which supplants the statutes that Congress has enacted and the regulations that the responsible agencies have promulgated.' The ruling, which applies to all people 'who are now or will be present in the United States,' effectively stops the proclamation in its tracks—at least after a two-week stay, during which the president is expected to appeal. In the interim, Moss said the administration 'shall take steps to ensure that they … are fully prepared to implement the Court's order without further delay.' Deborah Pearlstein of Princeton University noted that Moss's ruling exemplifies how courts may still rein in Trump's unlawful actions, even after the Supreme Court recently impeded their ability to do so in a ruling restricting lower courts' ability to issue nationwide freezes on Trump's anti-constitutional executive orders. Moss mentioned that Supreme Court case in his ruling, but cited the Administrative Procedure Act, a federal law that directs courts to 'set aside' federal actions found to be 'not in accordance with law.'

'Trump effect' touted as southern border numbers stay low, including new record
White House border czar Tom Homan revealed that southern border apprehensions in June were incredibly low – and nobody was released into the U.S. after being apprehended. "Total Border Patrol encounters for the entire month of June 2025 was 6,070. That is less than a single day under Biden," Homan posted to X on Tuesday, touting "the Trump effect." The figure is a dip of 15% from March, and a major dip from moments during the Biden administration, such as December 2023 where there were an average of roughly 11,000 encounters daily. There were only 8,039 apprehensions on a national scale by Border Patrol, which is lower than the record set in March. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the first three days of June 2024 had over 11,000 apprehensions, with the southern border alone having over 7,000 apprehensions in the first two days of that month. "As a matter of fact, the total number of encounters is less than half of a single day under Biden on many days. Also, none of the 6,070 were released into the U.S. ZERO. President Trump has created the most secure border in the history of the nation and the data proves it. We have never seen numbers this low. Never. God bless the men and women of the US Border Patrol and God bless the men and women of ICE. The interior arrests and consequences help to drive down illegal immigration. The TRUMP EFFECT keeps America winning," he continued. In June, Fox News reported that the number of apprehensions and gotaways was at new lows midway through the month. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said there were only 137 apprehensions on June 28, the lowest in roughly 25 years on a single day. Total nationwide encounters, which means encounters not just at the southern border, were the lowest in CBP history at 25,243, which is 12% less than the record low in February 2025. Gotaway numbers also shot down by 90% compared with June of last year. "The numbers don't lie – under President Trump's leadership, DHS and CBP have shattered records and delivered the most secure border in American history. The world is hearing our message: the border is closed to law breakers," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated. "Under President Trump, our Border Patrol agents are empowered to do their job once again, secure our border and protect the American people," she continued. While the political debate continues on deportation efforts and long-term solutions, the contrast remains incredibly stark from the Biden administration on the border itself. Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump deployed troops to the border and the administration began taking steps to resume construction of a wall, a project that was primarily halted with only a few exceptions under Biden. In Washington, the House is in the closing moments of its process on the reconciliation bill on Wednesday, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes billions in funding for border security and immigration enforcement for agencies like ICE and U.S. Border Patrol.
