SafeWise ranks 'safest cities' in New York: What they said about the Southern Tier
A SafeWise ranking of 2025 safest cities in New York placed Oneonta in the top 10. SafeWise, a safety and home security research company, uses information from an annual safety report to rank locations across the state based on the violent crime rate and property crime rate. While the list is branded as the "safest cities," it includes some towns with a population over 15,000. According to this year's State of Safety Report, residents are less worried about their overall safety and security compared to the year before. A reported 47% of New Yorkers said they worry about general crime and safety on a daily basis, down from 59% the previous year. Oneonta was the only municipality in the region SafeWise included in the top 10, earning the number 4 spot. Here's how other local areas fared in the New York safety rankings. Where Southern Tier cities land on safety rankings SafeWise named Oneonta the fourth safest city in New York with a reported violent crime rate of 0.24 per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of 4.42 per 1,000 people. The Town of Vestal was ranked 23rd, with a violent crime rate of 0.47 per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of 20.77 per 1,000 people. The City of Elmira was ranked 26th, with a violent crime rate of 3.21 per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of 14.69 per 1,000 people. The City of Binghamton was ranked 49th, followed by Jamestown, Buffalo, Albany and Rochester to round out the 53 municipalities SafeWise ranked. SafeWise reported Binghamton's violent crime rate was 6.63 per 1,000 people and its property crime rate was 35.98 per 1,000 people. New York State records show the number of violent crimes reported by the City of Binghamton Police Department decreased from 316 in 2023 to 272 in 2024. The state dataset did not include 2025 case numbers. A May state report indicated an increase in Binghamton shootings and shooting victims in January through April 2025 compared to the same months in 2024. Candidate for New York's 23rd Congressional District makes stop at Harris Hill
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — A former Republican party affiliate, now Democratic candidate, made a campaign visit at Harris Hill on Sunday to share why he is running to pursue the position to represent New York's 23rd Congressional District. Attorney Kevin Stocker, who is running against the incumbent Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy, held a gathering at a pavilion at Harris Hill to discuss his campaign with attendees on Sunday, July 13. Stocker told 18 News that he had been a lifelong Republican but changed his party affiliation to Democrat in 2016, the year President Trump was elected to his first term. How you receive your Social Security, VA benefits may change in fall: What to know His campaign, according to Stocker, is focused on addressing concerns he said he's heard from people regarding cuts to healthcare, Medicaid, Medicare, VA benefits, and tax cuts to billionaires. He also criticized Langworthy for his loyalty towards President Trump. Stocker exclaimed that Langworthy doesn't have the courage to hold public town halls in person with his constituents to explain his decisions, particularly in the Southern Tier. 'We're going to be fighting for hard working families and hard-working communities and everything that they're currently doing about cutting services that our communities rely on and giving the tax breaks to the billionaires and the millionaires. That's what the campaign is going to be about,' Stocker said. 'We're going to steer the ship the other direction. We're not going to be alienating trading partners and diminishing our status in the world. We're going to improve the lives of hard-working families that are struggling on a day-to-day basis, with all the factors that are going on in our communities, our economies, things of that nature,' he explained. 5 'Big, Beautiful Bill' changes to insurance Stocker expressed that he has no ill will against millionaires and billionaires for being successful but believes they should pay their fair share in taxes to alleviate financial burden on working families. He announced his campaign to run against Langworthy in June 2025 and has made stops to other places in the state such as, Owego, Hamburg, Clarence and plans to do town halls in Lockport and Olean in the future. As Pittsburgh's fireworks move to the North Shore, businesses prepared for a 4th of July rush
Businesses prepare for influx of traffic on 4th of July Businesses prepare for influx of traffic on 4th of July Businesses prepare for influx of traffic on 4th of July We're less than a day away from the Fourth of July, and with the movement of Pittsburgh's fireworks show, it's really going to be busy over on the North Shore. Different fireworks are taking over the North Shore this weekend than the home runs at PNC Park. "It's great for what we do," Dan Conroy, prep and line cook at North Shore Tavern and Mike's Beer Bar, said. "Great" -- because filled seats mean green for many of the bars and restaurants. "We're expecting to see a few thousand of our closest friends coming in," Conroy said. Mike's Beer Bar and North Shore Tavern aren't too far away from where the fireworks will be. "I would guarantee that tomorrow night, our patio is probably gonna be full," Conroy said. Over on the Great Lawn, there's a setup going on for tomorrow's music and food trucks. "This is kind of our big moment," Anna Brailey, general manager of Southern Tier Pittsburgh. Southern Tier is a short walk away from the Great Lawn. "We know that with the point being closed, it's gonna be a lot of overflow that we typically don't have," Brailey said. Everybody here is stocking up for that overflow. "We'll have an outdoor grill ready to go – we also have retail beer for people to sell," Brailey said. This won't be an Independence Day for the 4th of July either. "It's kind of the curse of the North Shore, as I would call it sometimes," Conroy said. "We tend to have many events happening at once." That includes Anthrocon, which runs through this weekend. "It's great to see all these people coming down towards the North Shore that might not be here on a weekly basis necessarily," Conroy said. Friday's celebration kicks off around 4 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled to start going off around 9:35 Friday night.

NYSDEC issues air quality advisory for Southern Tier, Finger Lakes on Saturday
N.Y. (WETM) — A health advisory concerning the air quality has been put in place for multiple counties in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions on Saturday, June 7, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner and State Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner announced in a release. On Saturday, June 7, the DEC and DOH announced in a release that from 10 a.m. through 11:59 p.m., on Saturday an air quality health advisory for 'fine particulate matter' has been issued due to the effects of the smoke coming from wildfires in Canada. The release said these advisories are issued by both agencies after a meteorologist from the DEC anticipates pollution levels, either ozone or fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), are going to be greater than an air quality index (AQI) number of 100. The pollutant that called for this advisory is Fine Particulate Matter, the release explained. 'Fine particulate matter (PM) consists of tiny solid particles or liquid droplets in the air that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter. PM 2.5 can be made of many different types of particles and often come from processes that involve combustion (e.g., vehicle exhaust, power plants, and fires) and from chemical reactions in the atmosphere.' The release stated that exposure can cause some short-term health effects, like irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath. People with medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease could experience worsened symptoms if exposed to high levels of fine particulate matter, the release further stated. People with heart or breathing problems, along with children and the elderly, may be rather sensitive to PM 2.5, the release said. Going indoors can reduce exposure when outdoor levels are high, the release explained, if there are significant indoor sources of PM 2.5 (tobacco, candle or incense smoke, or fumes from cooking), levels inside may not be lower than outside. The release emphasized that people can minimize outdoor and indoor sources and avoid strenuous activities in areas where fine particle concentrations are high to reduce exposure. Below are the counties in the Southern Tier & Finger Lakes Regions under the advisory: Chemung County Steuben County Schuyler County Tioga County (NY) Cayuga County Tompkins County Yates County If people would like any additional information regarding the advisory and how it works, you can visit the DEC or DOH websites.
