Sudan's Prime Minister Vows to ‘Eliminate Rebellion'
Sudan's newly appointed Prime Minister, Kamel Idris, pledged to 'completely eliminate the rebellion and all forms of rebel militias, and safeguard Sudan's national security,' while announcing the dissolution of the current government. On Sunday, Idris informed ministers in a meeting of the government's dissolution and assigned the secretaries-general and deputy ministers to manage affairs until a new government is formed. He urged countries supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to stop, calling for what he termed a 'comprehensive national healing campaign.' He said he would adopt an inclusive intra-Sudanese dialogue that excludes no one and rejects regionalism and racism 'after eliminating the rebellion.' In his first address to the Sudanese people following his swearing-in on Saturday, Idris said his priorities begin with national security, restoring the state's prestige, completely ending the ongoing rebellion, and dismantling the phenomenon of rebel militias. He promised to establish a rule of law that includes the prosecution, judiciary, constitutional court, maintaining security, and managing the transitional period and the executive apparatus efficiently and successfully to achieve security and stability in the country. Idris added that he would work on rebuilding Sudan's foreign relations, especially with neighboring countries and the wider Arab and African regions, as well as with all countries globally. The Sovereignty Council chairman and army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a decree on May 19 appointing Idris as prime minister, filling a position left vacant since the resignation of former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. Hamdok resigned following the October 25, 2021 coup led by Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as 'Hemedti,' against the civilian government that was formed after the popular uprising which overthrew former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. This government was often referred to as the 'revolution government.' Idris, who took his oath on Saturday, previously served as Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. He also ran against former President Omar al-Bashir in the 2010 presidential elections, receiving around 77,000 votes out of over 10 million voters. Meanwhile, on Sunday, three drones struck locations affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces in western Sudan, according to eyewitnesses. Residents reported that the airstrikes hit the center of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, targeting a hotel, an RSF medical unit, and RSF positions on the city's eastern outskirts.

Kamil Idris sworn in as Sudan's new prime minister
KHARTOUM — Kamil Idris was sworn in on Saturday as Sudan's new prime minister before Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sovereignty Council, amid a deepening civil conflict and worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the country. His appointment follows a constitutional decree issued by al-Burhan on May 19. According to Sudan's official news agency SUNA, the swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, Secretary-General of the Sovereign Council, and the head of the judiciary in the Red Sea State, who represented the Chief Justice. Idris, a veteran politician with a PhD in international law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, previously ran as a presidential candidate in the 2010 elections. He succeeds Dafallah Al-Haj Youssef, Sudan's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, who had been serving as caretaker prime minister and minister of Cabinet affairs. Idris assumes leadership as Sudan continues to grapple with a brutal power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted on April 15, 2023. The conflict has plunged the nation into one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises. More than 20,000 people have been confirmed killed, and over 15 million displaced, according to UN figures and local authorities. Some US-based researchers estimate the actual death toll could exceed 130,000. The ongoing violence has overwhelmed aid efforts, disrupted governance, and left millions without access to basic necessities. Idris's swearing-in marks a critical political moment, though it remains unclear how the appointment will affect the power dynamics on the ground or efforts toward peace. Sudan's transitional political process began in April 2019 after the military ousted longtime President Omar al-Bashir. A Sovereignty Council was later formed, with Burhan at its helm, to oversee governance and transition efforts. The council assumed full control following a military takeover in November 2021. — Agencies

Kamil Idris Takes Helm as Sudan's New Prime Minister Amid Major National Challenges
Ahmed Emam Kamil Idris has taken the helm as Sudan's new Prime Minister following a formal swearing-in ceremony held earlier Sunday in the capital, Khartoum. The oath of office was administered by Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, signaling a significant political development as the country faces mounting internal crises. Immediately after assuming office, Idris held a meeting with General al-Burhan to address key national issues, including security, political stability, and economic recovery. The discussions come amid ongoing armed conflict in several regions, particularly the restive Kordofan area. In his first public statement, Idris thanked the Sudanese leadership for their confidence and pledged to utilize his international experience to advance peace and development. He emphasized the importance of laying strong foundations for a stable and unified Sudan. Idris, a native of Al-Dawrat in Dongola State in northern Sudan, belongs to the Nubian community. He holds a law degree from Cairo University and a diploma in legal studies from the University of Khartoum. Internationally, he is best known for his tenure as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva and his service on the United Nations International Law Commission—roles that have earned him global recognition and legal expertise. The Sudanese public has largely welcomed Idris's appointment with cautious optimism. Many view him as a capable and independent figure with an unblemished record in international service. However, the challenges ahead are formidable: forming a new government in the coming days, addressing widespread poverty and hardship, delivering aid to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people, rehabilitating damaged infrastructure in Khartoum, and restoring state authority in conflict-hit regions. As Idris takes the helm, hopes are pinned on his ability to guide Sudan through one of the most turbulent periods in its modern history, and toward a path of stability and national renewal. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

African Union welcomes new Sudan PM amidst ongoing Omdurman clashes
The African Union (AU) on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of Kamel Tayeb Idris as Sudan's new prime minister, following a decree by Sovereignty Council Chairperson Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, as the Sudanese army continued large-scale military operations, particularly in Omdurman's Salha district. Mahmoud Ali Youssef, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, described Idris's appointment as 'a step towards inclusive governance.' He expressed hope that it would 'contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic rule in Sudan.' In a statement, Youssef urged all concerned Sudanese parties 'to redouble their efforts towards a peaceful, inclusive, civilian-led transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.' He affirmed that 'the African Union Commission remains ready to support Sudan in this regard, in cooperation with regional and international partners.' The statement also underscored 'the African Union's firm commitment to Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and stability, and to the pursuit of a lasting political solution that ensures peace, development, and democratic governance for all Sudanese.' Meanwhile, Sudanese army spokesperson Brigadier Nabil Abdullah stated that government forces were engaged in ongoing operations. 'Our forces are continuing their operations in southern and western Omdurman and are continuing to clear the Salha area and its surroundings,' he said. Abdullah added in a statement, 'We are continuing a large-scale operation and are approaching the complete clearing of Khartoum state.' On Monday, the Sudanese army launched a military operation in the Salha area, considered one of the last major strongholds of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Omdurman. The appointment of the new prime minister was formalised on Monday when Abdel Fattah al-Burhan issued a decree appointing Kamel Idris. The decree also named Salma Abdel Jabbar Al-Mubarak and Nawara Abu Mohamed Mohamed Taher as members of the Sovereignty Council, the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported. Idris is a former United Nations official and was an independent candidate in the 2010 presidential elections against then-President Omar al-Bashir, according to SUNA. A jurist, Idris is known for heading the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva for two terms and was also a member of the UN International Law Commission.

Sudan's Al-Burhan appoints Kamil Idris as new Prime Minister
Egypt - The Chairperson of Sudan's Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, on Monday issued a decree appointing Kamil Tayyib Idris as Prime Minister. In a related development, Burhan issued another decree appointing Salma Abdel Jabbar al-Mubarak and Nawara Abu Mohammed Mohammed Tahir as members of the Sovereignty Council, according to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA). Idris is a former United Nations official and was an independent candidate in the 2010 presidential elections, running against former President Omar al-Bashir. Following the events of April 2019 that led to Bashir's ousting, the Sudanese Professionals Association presented a set of demands to the military council. Notably, these included the formation of a transitional civilian government headed by an independent div. The proposal suggested that the military council, led by Burhan, would oversee the Ministries of Defence and Interior, while the remaining ministries would be assigned to competent civilian divs. Idris was nominated at that time to head the government. Idris, a legal expert, is known for his work at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and served as Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). He was also a member of the United Nations International Law Commission. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Cairo University in Egypt, a Bachelor of Law from the University of Khartoum, and a PhD in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Idris also possesses several certificates in law, political science, international affairs, and finance from higher institutes in Geneva. Previously, on 30 April, Al-Burhan had appointed diplomat Dafallah Al-Haj Ali as Minister of Cabinet Affairs and tasked him with managing the duties of Prime Minister. He also approved the appointment of Ambassador Omar Siddiq as Foreign Minister. These appointments came weeks after the army reportedly regained control of the capital, Khartoum. © 2024 Daily News Egypt. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (
