Photo courtesy NASA July 18 (UPI) -- The four members of NASA's Crew-11 space mission entered quarantine in the Houston area ahead of their planned launch on July 13 from central Florida to the International Space Station. NASA's Crew 11 is the 11th operational mission of SpaceX's Dragon Endeavour spacecraft aboard a Falcon 9. On Thursday, they entered isolation at Johnson Space Center: NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Finck, as well as Japan Aerospace Exploration astronaut Kimiya Yui and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Plantonov, 39. The two-week quarantine is standard procedure for NASA since Apollo from 1968 to 1972 to reduce preflight illness and prevent subsequent symptoms during flight. Their contact with other people is limited. Cardman, the 37-year-old commander, is making her first spaceflight with Fincke, 58, making his fourth trip to ISS. Yui, 55, will be on his first spaceflight and Platonov on his maiden mission. NASA released a podcast of the quartet on Friday. NASA's @SpaceX Crew-11 mission is just a few weeks away from blasting off to the @Space_Station. The crew recently sat down to talk about their background, their mission, and their favorite astronauts. Get the full story on Houston, We Have A Podcast: NASA (@NASA) July 18, 2025 The crew members spent several months training at NASA and SpaceX sites. They participated in training simulations at SpaceX's facility in Hawthorne, Calif., including launch, docking, undocking and departing from the ISS. Also, they were involved in a water survival demonstration inside the Neutral Buoyancy Lab at Johnson Space Center. At NASA, the crew trained at Launch Complex 39A on the emergency escape system, which employs slidewire baskets to deliver crew and pad teams from the launch tower to armored vehicles on the ground. Earlier this month, the crew participated in an equipment interface test, putting on their spacesuits and familiarizing themselves with the interior of their Dragon spacecraft. NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 12:09 p.m. EDT July 31 from Pad 39A for the launch. The Falcon 9 has flown 515 times since 2010 from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Crew-10 launched from Kennedy Space Center on March 14. Their arrival at ISS provided a way home for two NASA astronauts who have been on the ISS since June 2024 after arriving on June 5, 2024 on the Boeing Starling Crew Flight. SpaceX, a private company with Elon Musk as CEO, is the only way now for NASA to send crews to the ISS from the United States. Americans also can fly on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft.

NASA changes schedule for several upcoming rocket launches from Florida

NASA says it is adjusting the schedule for some upcoming launches on Florida's Space Coast. It wants to give more time to finalize mission plans. NASA says the Axiom-4 mission is now set to launch on June 8. The Axiom-4 mission looks to send a private crew to the International Space Station from the Kennedy Space Center. Meantime, the SpaceX Crew-11 launch has been moved to late July. Then SpaceX's 33rd commercial resupply mission will launch in late August. During the first four months of the year, 36 orbital rockets took flight from Florida's Space Coast. That equates to a record-breaking pace that would erase last year's record of 93 annual liftoffs. In fact? Space Force officials now project this year's final total may reach 107 launches. Will a new record materialize? Stay tuned. NASA SpaceX Crew-9 finally on Earth; when is the next SpaceX launch, Boeing mission?

In case you haven't heard, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore splash-landed back on Earth on Tuesday after a months-long stay in space. The NASA astronauts made a dramatic water landing off the coast of Florida on Tuesday on a SpaceX Dragon capsule following a 17-hour trip across the cosmos to return home. The astronauts were aboard a test flight for Boeing Starliner last June when the vehicle failed, leading to the duo's nearly 10-month stay at the International Space Station. On Tuesday, they arrived home with two spacenauts from SpaceX Crew-9, who flew up last September aboard the Dragon vehicle selected to bring the Starliner astronauts home. With SpaceX's Crew-10 now at the International Space Station for an extended stay, and with Boeing still not considered operational by NASA due to a bevy of concerns, here's the difference between SpaceX and Boeing and when both are expected to return to the International Space Station with astronauts. NASA contracted Boeing and SpaceX in September 2014 to transport crew to the International Space Station from the United States under the commercial crew program. This allows NASA to pay the companies — Elon Musk's SpaceX and Kelly Ortberg's Boeing — to launch and transport astronauts to space, freeing up NASA to focus on other orbital adventures, such as crewed expeditions to Mars. The Boeing Starliner, however, while trying to compete with Musk's SpaceX, has been fraught with problems. During its first uncrewed test flight in December 2019, it failed to reach the ISS, although successfully docked in 2022. Last year on its maiden manned voyage with Williams and Wilmore aboard, NASA officials determined the craft wasn't safe enough to carry the crew home, and instead returned to Earth empty. SpaceX's Crew-10 made a spine-tingling launch into orbit aboard the Dragon Endurance on Friday, March 14, which was viewed by over two million people on the SpaceX livestream. That crew will remain for about six months, which is typical, at the International Space Station. The next manned flight, NASA's SpaceX Crew-11, will be the second crew rotation in 2025. NASA said it is targeted for "no earlier than July" to "benefit the space station needs, including accommodating resupply flights and other operations aboard the orbiting laboratory." That crew will be announced at a later date. SpaceX Crew-11, the next manned mission to the International Space Station, will take place "no sooner than July," according to NASA. The Boeing Starliner is meant to one day become a second operational vehicle for NASA under the commercial crew program but has been riddled with safety issues, technical concerns and costly delays. It has yet to launch a manned crew that has not had technical issues, as evidenced by Whitmore and Williams' journey last year. The timing of Starliner's next flight is to be determined. According to NASA, they are "keeping options open" on how best to achieve Starliner's certification, including "windows of opportunity for a potential Starliner flight in 2025." Lori Comstock is a New Jersey-based journalist with the Mid-Atlantic Connect Team. This article originally appeared on NASA Starliner crew safe at home; when is next SpaceX launch?
