Spartans to report for preseason fall camp next week
Michigan State football will reportedly kick off fall camp next week. On3's Pete Nakos has put together a comprehensive list of when each power four team across the country will report for fall preseason camp, and for Michigan State that is next week. Per Nakos, the Spartans are scheduled to report to East Lansing, Mich. on July 28 with "camp starting shortly after." With the Spartans slated to return for preseason camp early next week, we as media and fans should get our first look at the 2025 Michigan State squad sometime shortly after they report. Typically, media will be given availability to attend at least a portion of practice and talk to players and coaches the first week the team reports for fall camp. Michigan State is coming off a third straight losing season, with the Spartans finishing 5-7 in Jonathan Smith's first year as the head coach. The Spartans enter this fall with similar national expectations as last season, with many picking them to finish in the bottom half of the Big Ten and landing right around the bowl eligibility cutoff again. Michigan State officially opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with the game slated to be televised on FS1. Spartans listed in bottom half of Big Ten football preseason media poll
The media has spoken, and they believe Michigan State will finish near the bottom of the Big Ten again this fall. The annual (formerly Cleveland Plain Dealer) preseason Big Ten media poll was released on Monday, with the Spartans landing in the back half of the league. Michigan State was pegged as the No. 13 team in the league, tied with Rutgers. This year's poll included 24 voters, with beat reporters from each team covered. Michigan State received 135 points and averaged out a ranking of 13.60 in the poll. UCLA was right behind the Spartans with only one point separating them from Michigan State and Rutgers. For perspective, our internal Spartans Wire preseason poll had Michigan State coming in at No. 8 in the league. So as we predicted, the Spartans Wire crew has higher expectations for the Spartans this fall than others covering the league. Spartans Wire Big Ten Football Preseason Media Poll, Awards
Big Ten Football Media Days are nearly upon us so that means its time to unveil some rankings and preseason predictions. Annually, will compile an official media poll and preseason awards that is released just ahead of the Big Ten Football Media Days. Us three at Spartans Wire are unfortunately not included in that media poll, but, who says we can't let our voices be heard? So with that being said, we are releasing our own preseason poll and awards this year. See where we have the Spartans landing and who we envision having the most impactful seasons on the field below: Our Media Poll Here is our preseason rankings for all 18 teams in the Big Ten: Ranking / Team Points 1. Ohio State 54 (3) 2. Oregon 48 3. Penn State 47 4. Nebraska 44 5. USC 40 6. Illinois 39 7. Michigan 35 8. Michigan State 32 9. Iowa 30 10. Indiana 27 11. Washington 25 12. Wisconsin 23 13. Minnesota 19 14. UCLA 16 15. Rutgers 14 16. Northwestern 10 17. Maryland 6 18. Purdue 4 ***Voting system is based on highest ranked team receiving 18 points, second-highest ranked team receiving 17 points and following that sequence to the last-place team receiving one point Thoughts on Michigan State To no surprise, the group of writers who closely follow Michigan State is higher on the Spartans than the national and regional media. Michigan State came in at No. 8 in our rankings, with none of us having the Spartans lower than No. 9 in our Big Ten rankings. It'll be interesting to see next week where the Spartans land in the official Big Ten media poll but I can almost assure you it won't be in the upper half of the league like us. With that being said, the Spartans' struggles over the past few seasons will heavily play a role in that official media poll, where as our poll is forecasting Michigan State to take a notable positive step this upcoming fall. Michigan State is one of a few Big Ten schools with top 25 QB commitment in 2026 class
Michigan State is one of only a few Big Ten teams that currently holds a commitment from a top 25 quarterback prospect in the 2026 class. All of the Rivals' top 25 quarterback prospects in the 2026 class are now committed, and Michigan State is fortunate enough to have one of the commits in Kayd Coffman. He ranks as the No. 23 quarterback in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the 2026 class, which is fifth among Big Ten commitments in the position. Coffman has been committed to Michigan State since early February and ranks as one of the top commitments in the Spartans' 2026 class. On rivals, he is listed as a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 6 player from Michigan and No. 237 overall prospect in the class. Coffman has long been considered a centerpiece of the Spartans' 2026 class so it's no surprise to see him among the top 25 quarterbacks in the class. Should Michigan State hold onto his commitment throughout this fall and sign him in December, he will surely be a big part of the Spartans' future on the gridiron. Hear Spartans Wire writer Robert Bondy preview the upcoming MSU football season on local radio show One of Spartans Wire's own (me, specifically) took their talents to the radio waves earlier this week to talk Michigan State football. Earlier this week, I had the luxury to join Sports Intel with Ryan Walsh radio show on Jethro FM to preview the upcoming Michigan State football season. I've been on Walsh's show before talking Michigan State football and basketball, and always enjoy the opportunity to help inform listeners on anything Spartans related. Some of the topics covered on during the 30-minute segment of the show were: Click on the post below to listen to the radio segment from earlier this week, with the Michigan State portion of the show beginning around the 53-minute mark: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion.
