Mara's Penang campus follows Sabah example

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Dapur HEP helps ease the financial burden on students. BUKIT MERTAJAM: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Penang campus has introduced a community kitchen initiative, dubbed Dapur Hal Ehwal Pelajar (Dapur HEP), to ease the financial burden on students, making it the first UiTM campus in Peninsular Malaysia to open the kitchen following its implementation at UiTM Sabah in 2023. Dapur HEP was the brainchild of Prof Dr Mohd Sazili Shahibi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs (HEP), who conceived it during a meeting with deputy rectors of Student Affairs across all UiTM campuses. It was introduced at the Penang campus on June 4, 2023, under the leadership of the then Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Associate Professor Dr Basharudin Abdul Hadi. Penang UiTM's Student Residential and Hospitality staff Dewi Anis Othman said the initiative began with only four rice cookers and 20 kg of rice donated by a private contributor. Since then, the kitchen has expanded and is now equipped with two sets of stoves, essential items, and canned food, allowing students to prepare their meals. She said the kitchen operates from the second-floor pantry of the residential college for male students (Intan) and female students (Nilam). Advertisement 'The kitchen is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm with daily monitoring by the College Representative Committee to ensure cleanliness and maintain inventory,' she told Bernama recently. She said that although the kitchen targets students from the B40 group, it is open to all students as the university understands the financial struggles that many of them face, having to tighten their belts to make it through their studies. Dewi Anis said the initiative has so far benefited 50 per cent of the 5,500 students from seven residential colleges on campus, adding that it won the Gold Category Special Award for Best Dapur HEP at the 2024 UiTM Excellence Awards for National Student Residencies in January. She said the programme also received attention from Asean member countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand, whose representatives visited the campus to study the approach that UiTM Penang adopted, intending to implement a similar model at their universities. 'We hope to expand the Dapur HEP initiative so that more students can benefit, especially students with disabilities. We are currently working to identify a suitable ground-floor location for this purpose,' she said, adding that around 15 UiTM campuses, including satellite campuses, have already begun implementing the Dapur HEP initiative. Meanwhile, a Master's in Chemical Engineering student, Nur Basiroh Mohd Rahim, 26, praised UiTM's effort in opening the kitchen, admitting that it has been a great help in reducing her daily food expenses. 'I would spend around RM15 per day for food, sometimes more during lunch. Dapur HEP allows me to save money, especially on weekends, by cooking simple meals like fried rice and sharing them with my friends,' she said. Muhammad Hakimie Azim Azha, 22, said other universities should emulate UiTM's initiative to introduce Dapur HEP, as not all students come from well-off families. 'Studying at university costs a lot, especially for someone like me who's taking a tourism course, as we often have off-campus trips. I make full use of Dapur HEP. It would be a waste not to, as it helps reduce food expenses. 'I use the kitchen about four to five times a week, and it helps me save around RM15 to RM20,' said the final-year Diploma in Tourism student. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Son Reflects On Rozaid's Unwavering Dedication To Journalism

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) --The son of Rozaid Abdul Rahman, a respected journalist posthumously honoured with the Special Award at the 2025 National Journalists' Day (HAWANA), said his late father would never compromise on his principles or the quality of his work, always ensuring that he completed every assignment before going home. Roz Ariffin, 34, Rozaid's eldest son, told Bernama this after accepting the award from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, describing the recognition as a great honour for the family. "My family and I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the HAWANA organisers for this meaningful recognition. Honestly, I feel an overwhelming sadness as it should have been my late father standing here to receive this award himself," he said at the 2025 HAWANA celebration main event at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Rozaid, who passed away on Aug 18, 2024, from a heart attack at the age of 59, is regarded as a towering figure in Malaysian journalism, with a career spanning over four decades. Born in Nibong Tebal, Penang, on Oct 1, 1964, Rozaid began his career as a cadet reporter with Utusan Melayu on April 21, 1984. He later rose to the position of chief reporter and, at the age of 27, made history as the youngest individual to be appointed as news editor of Kumpulan Utusan. Roz Ariffin, a part-time editor at a local media company, said his father consistently set an example for the family that hard work would always bring lasting rewards. That unwavering dedication, he said, was evident throughout his life. "Even while unwell, he continued to ask about daily assignments and work developments at the office. He kept up with current affairs and never neglected his responsibilities. "..In the two months leading up to his passing, he tired easily and lacked energy, yet even in that condition, he never once abandoned his duties. That has been a source of inspiration for all of us," he said.

Roundup: Chinese director Bi Gan wins Special Award at 78th Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, France, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese director Bi Gan won on Saturday the Special Award at the 78th Cannes Film Festival for his epic fiction feature Resurrection, known in Chinese as Kuang Ye Shi Dai. Introducing the first award of the evening, Jury President Juliette Binoche described Resurrection as 'an exceptional movie.'" In his acceptance speech, Bi thanked the Festival and his cast. He also expressed his gratitude for all those who have constantly contributed to the development of cinema. Resurrection, directed by the 35-year-old Bi Gan, premiered late Thursday night. He used this two-hour and forty-minute film to show his love for cinema, starting the movie with a silent movie style. Festival organizers introduced Resurrection as a work that showcases the continued evolution of Bi's creativity, while staying true to the sensory and poetic qualities that define his unique cinematic style. For French film critic Gerard Marion, Resurrection was like a universe. "It's something that I rarely saw in cinema, especially by a Chinese director," he told Xinhua. Bi took the audience to a "very particular universe where we should just let the sound, image, motion and decor take us there," Marion said. In his review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, called Bi Gan's Resurrection "bold and ambitious, visually amazing, trippy and woozy in its embrace of hallucination and the heightened meaning of the unreal and the dreamlike." Bi first attended Cannes in 2015 with his debut feature film. The Festival said that he has since established himself as a major player in shaping and defining the new generation of Chinese arthouse cinema. In the press conference after the closing ceremony, Jury President Juliette Binoche said that all members of the Jury agreed to award Bi Gan with the Special Award, because Resurrection "is like a UFO, an amazing invention." For her, Resurrection was so different. "Visually, it really moved me. I found it extraordinary. This film allows for dreams, subtexts that we feel and that are real. It's full of poetry and allows us to feel something within ourselves," she said. For his part, Bi explained why he created Resurrection. "There should be a film about the cinema that can comfort people in this world full of changes," he said. During the closing ceremony, all the awards of the Competition section were announced. Iranian director Jafar Panahi's film A Simple Accident was crowned the Palme d'Or. The Grand Prix was given to the film Sentimental Value directed by Joachim Trier. The Jury Prize was shared by two movies, Sirat directed by Oliver Laxe, and Sound of Falling directed by Mascha Schilinski. Brazilian movie The Secret Agent (Portuguese: O Agente Secreto) was the big winner of the night, taking home Best Director (Kleber Mendonca Filho) and Best Performance by an Actor (Wagner Moura). The Jury gave Best Performance by an Actress to Nadia Melliti for her role in The Little Sister (French: La Petite Derniere). Belgium's famous Dardenne brothers won Best Screenplay for Young Mothers (French: Jeunes Meres). This year, a total of 22 feature films were selected to compete for the Festival's highest honor, the Palme d'Or. The 78th Cannes Film Festival ran from May 13 to 24.
