Have Your Say On The Legal Services (Distribution Of Special Fund) Amendment Bill
The Justice Committee is calling for public submissions on the Legal Services (Distribution of Special Fund) Amendment Bill. The Lawyers and Conveyancers' Special Fund collects interest from banks on solicitors' and licensed conveyancers' nominated trust accounts. Under section 298 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, money in the Special Fund must be paid to the Secretary of Justice for the purpose of funding community law centres. Section 94 of the Legal Services Act 2011 enables the Secretary to enter into contracts with community law centres to purchase community services. The bill would amend the Act to allow the Secretary to also enter into contracts to fund, facilitate, or otherwise support the provision of community legal services. Tell the Justice Committee what you think Make a submission on the bill by 1.00pm on Thursday 14 August 2025.

Dissent grows in Karnataka Congress as MLAs slam state government over corruption, stalled development
BELAGAVI: Already under fire from the opposition over the alleged halt in developmental work across Karnataka, the state government is now facing growing criticism from within its own ranks. Senior Congress legislators have begun voicing strong discontent over escalating corruption and administrative inaction. Just days after Aland MLA BR Patil expressed outrage over rampant corruption in the housing department, another senior Congress leader, Kagwad MLA Raju Kage, echoed similar sentiments. Kage went a step further, alleging that the administration had completely collapsed in the state and warned he might resign from his position after meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah within the next two days. Kage expressed frustration over the complete standstill of developmental work in his constituency. He claimed that the government's control over its bureaucracy had eroded to such an extent that senior engineers were ignoring official directives with impunity. 'What BR Patil said that corruption in the government is entirely true,' said Kage. 'The administration is unwilling to clear even essential developmental proposals. Two years ago, we submitted a plan to build 72 community halls under the CM's Special Fund, with an estimated budget of ₹13 crore. To date, not a single work order has been issued.' Kage further alleged that assistant executive engineers and executive engineers were simply not implementing government orders, leading to a complete breakdown in governance. 'There's nothing left for me. My constituency has been neglected, and I see no alternative but to resign,' he added.

Greater Chennai Corporation plans to improve 346 roads in 14 zones for ₹92.74 crore
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to improve 346 roads across 14 zones in the city at a cost of ₹92.74 crore under its Special Fund 2025–26. Tenders were floated for this, and the work order for relaying roads is expected to be handed over to the contractors by the end of May, said a senior official of the GCC's Bus Route Roads Department. The works is split into 21 packages to upgrade interior and bus route roads (IRR and BRR), cement concrete (CC), bituminous tar (BT), and interlocking pavers (ILP), according to a document shared by the GCC. Package-1 covers 24 roads in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Royapuram zones at a cost of ₹4.37 crore. Package-2 includes 18 roads in Madhavaram, Royapuram, and Anna Nagar zones for ₹4.35 crore. Package-3 covers 21 roads in Manali, Madhavaram, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Anna Nagar Zones at ₹4.53 crore. 'The reason for this is that assigning an entire zone to a single contractor may lead to widespread issues if any problems arise. Therefore, the zones have been divided into smaller packages to expedite work,' said a GCC official.
