Not Aadhaar card, PAN card or Ration card will prove Indian citizenship; only these documents will, they are...

(Representational image/AI generated) New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues Aadhaar cards to the residents of India as identity and address proof. So far, it has issued the Aadhaar card to more than 90 percent of the population of India. The Aadhaar card is an important document used for identity and address proof. But it is not a proof of Indian citizenship as has been explained time and again by the central government. The Aadhaar card one of the important and basic documents in India, not a proof of citizenship. What does Aadhaar stand for? As mentioned above, the Aadhaar card is an important document used for identity and address proof to facilitate many procedures that require proof of identity and the address of the applicant. It is not a proof of Indian citizenship. The issue of Aadhaar card not being proof of Indian citizenship emerged after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar before Legislative Assembly elections. When this matter reached the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India (ECI) pointed out that Aadhaar doesn't validate citizenship of any individual. Now the question is what official documents will prove Indian citizenship? What documents will prove Indian citizenship? Since Aadhaar is not a proof of citizenship of any individual, there are other ways to prove it. Here we tell you which documents are considered to be a valid proof of citizenship by the government of India. Valid Indian Passport: The passport is mandatory to travel abroad. But in the context of citizenship, it is a key document to authenticate the nationality of an individual. A valid Indian passport is one of the proofs of citizenship in India as it allows an Indian national to claim their identity as a citizen of the Republic of India. Birth Certificate: It is mandatory to register every birth and death in a family. For citizenship, the birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, stands as a valid and primary proof of citizenship. Voter ID (EPIC): Birth certificates and passports don't require a minimum age criterion. In this case, the voter ID card or the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) of an individual serves the purpose of the proof of Indian citizenship. Domicile Certificate: It is an official document issued by a state or Union Territory government in India to certify an individual's permanent residence in that specific region. Domicile certificate validates that a person has resided in a specific state or union territory, which further substantiates the claims of holding Indian citizenship.

Poll Body Invokes Article 326 Amid 'Bihar Bandh' Protests Over Electoral Roll Revisions

Last Updated: The Election Commission shared Article 326 of the Constitution, which mandates the inclusion of all eligible voters and the removal of ineligible ones from the electoral roll. Amid the political row over the Election Commission's decision to hold a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, the poll body on Wednesday posted Article 326 of the Constitution on its social media platforms. The controversy centres around the poll body's decision to revise the electoral rolls in Bihar, where assembly elections are due later this year, with the opposition raising concerns over the timing of the move. Taking to X, the Election Commission shared Article 326 of the Constitution, which mandates the inclusion of all eligible voters and the removal of ineligible ones from the electoral roll. The poll body on June 24 issued a notification for holding a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, signalling that electoral rolls will be prepared afresh ahead of polls. Amid mounting criticism over the decision, the state poll body on Sunday relaxed document requirements for submitting electoral forms. Voters can now submit completed forms without mandatory documents, which may be provided at a later stage. In a Hindi-language newspaper advertisement, the office of the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) urged voters to submit their filled and signed forms to Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) even if they lack the necessary documents. Bihar Bandh Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday joined a protest march in Patna against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, as part of the 'Bihar Bandh' called by the Opposition. He was accompanied by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, CPI general secretary D Raja, and other leaders from the Mahagathbandhan alliance. Rahul Gandhi, who arrived in the state capital earlier in the day, led the demonstration alongside top Opposition figures, expressing concern over the timing and intent behind the SIR process. Commenting on Gandhi's participation, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram said, 'Whenever the country has faced a crisis, Rahul Gandhi has fought on the streets. Today, voting is on the verge of being banned, we are fighting for it, and Rahul Gandhi is coming here for it." Independent MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, reached the Sachiwalay Halt railway station with his supporters and attempted to disrupt train services as part of the Bihar Bandh protests. Speaking to the media in Patna, he alleged, 'The Election Commission, through its special intensive revision of electoral rolls, is snatching voting rights from migrants, Dalits, Mahadalits, and poor voters. It's a conspiracy to block votes ahead of the Bihar assembly polls due later this year." Meanwhile, workers from the RJD, Congress, CPI(ML) Liberation, and CPM staged protests in Arwal, Jehanabad, and Darbhanga by burning tyres and blocking roads in support of the bandh. view comments First Published: July 09, 2025, 13:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav lead 'Bihar Bandh' protest in Patna against electoral roll revisions

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 9 (ANI): Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, on Wednesday led the 'Bihar Bandh' protest in Patna against the Election Commission of India's (ECI) decision to undertake the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. Several senior leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, including CPI General Secretary D Raja, CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation leader Dipankar Bhattacharya, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram, Kanhaiya Kumar, and Sanjay Yadav also participated in the protest. Independent MP from Purnea, Pappu Yadav, joined the demonstrators at the Sachiwalay Halt railway station, raising slogans like 'Chunav Aayog hosh mein aao' (Election Commission, come to your senses). As part of the protest, Congress workers blocked the railway track at Sachiwalay Halt station, demanding a rollback of the ECI's move. Speaking to reporters, NSUI national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar said, 'We are on the streets to protect democracy because it is said that if streets become silent, the parliament goes astray (Agar sadke suni ho jaayen to sansad awaara ho jati hai.' Additionally, Sanjay Yadav, firing shots at ECI, said that the electoral rolls revision is 'completely non-transparent and misleading.' 'Electoral rolls revision in Bihar by Election Commission is completely non-transparent and misleading. This is a way to snatch the right of people to vote. We are asking questions to the Election Commission, but answers will come from the BJP. It shows the Election Commission has become a unit of BJP,' he said. An RJD worker protesting against the voter list revision said, 'Under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav and Rahul Gandhi, leaders and workers of Mahagathbandhan will protest against the Modi government and the Election Commission of India.' Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India said that it is most likely that the exercise of the collection of Enumeration Forms will be completed well before the last day of collection. According to ECI, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar is progressing well, with 3,70,77,077 Enumeration Forms, which is 46.95 per cent of the total of 7,89,69,844 (nearly 7.90 crore) electors in Bihar, collected (at 6:00 PM) in the first 14 days since the issuance of SIR instructions on June 24. EC clarifies ‘no change in instructions' for Bihar electoral roll revision; says first phase of SIR completed

PATNA: The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday claimed that the initial phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in election bound Bihar has been completed, with the forms having been made available to all the eligible electors. Further, the EC asserted that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar was "being implemented smoothly at the ground level" and "there is no change in instructions". The EC on June 24 issued instructions to carry out an SIR in Bihar, apparently to weed out ineligible names and ensure only eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll. In a statement here, the EC made it clear that while voters were required to "submit their documents anytime before July 25, 2025", those who failed to do so would get an opportunity "during the Claims & Objections period also". The EC also urged people to "beware of statements being made by a few persons, who without reading the SIR order dated 24 June 2025.... are attempting to confuse the public with their incorrect and misleading statements". According to the EC, the exercise was necessitated by rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants. The poll panel said that with the exercise, it wants to ensure the integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls.
