Wales' only shortlisted firm for national construction awards

A Pontypool steel specialist company is the only Welsh firm to be shortlisted for a national construction award. Pro Steel Engineering has been recognised in the Specialist Contractor of the Year category at the Construction News Awards 2025. The company was nominated for its work with WSP and Mace, which saw the development of a new 'kit-of-parts' approach for Manchester Airports Group. This approach was developed using digital design and programme-level thinking. Haydn Roberts, operations director at Pro Steel Engineering, said: "The new kit-of-parts approach has revolutionised the way we're able to successfully operate and deliver projects in time-restricted/critical environments. "The digital design approach was invaluable for this project, and by seamlessly integrating it with our own design, fabrication, and installation methodology, we were able to manage and coordinate 100 per cent of the steel-to-steel connection design, steelwork fabrication, intumescent fire-rated paint system, and cladding application in controlled conditions within the factory, before even needing to step foot on the airport. "This not only significantly reduced the demands and time of on-site crane use, and our site team's worker-hours by over 30 per cent, but it also significantly reduced the carbon emissions traditional methods would have required to transport." Richard Selby, co-founder and director of Pro Steel Engineering, said: "I'm immensely proud of the team for their work on this specific project. "We've been able to use new processes and digital innovation to drive a more efficient work plan, whilst still adhering to the high levels of health and safety obligations and compliance. "This prestigious award shortlisting is testament to our team and that of our partner organisations who work with us time and time again and we have our fingers crossed that we bring the award back to Wales." The winners will be announced on July 10.
