Morocco Ranks 96th Globally in Fixed Internet Speed
Rabat — Morocco ranked 96th out of 152 countries in fixed broadband internet speed, according to the latest Speedtest Global Index published by Ookla. The report, which analyzed data from April to June 2025, shows that Morocco recorded an average download speed of 61.43 Mbps on fixed connections such as ADSL and fiber. In contrast, the global average speed for fixed broadband during the same period reached 103 Mbps, featuring a significant performance gap between Morocco and leading digital nations. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates continue to dominate the global rankings, with average speeds well above 200 Mbps. The report tracks internet performance across the world and provides a quarterly update based on millions of user-initiated tests. Although Morocco has made modest improvements in recent years, the country still faces challenges in extending high-speed internet access to all regions, particularly rural and semi-urban areas. Digital experts stress the need for stronger investment in infrastructure and regulatory reforms to improve performance and affordability. The findings come amid ongoing public concerns over service quality and internet pricing in Morocco, as users increasingly rely on digital platforms for education, work, and entertainment. Morocco has in recent years launched several initiatives to bolster its internet infrastructure, aiming to enhance connectivity and bridge the digital divide. The North African country has designed a rollout of 5G mobile technology scheduled for November this year, just before the start of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Through this initiative, Morocco is set to provide 5G access to 25% of its population by the end of 2025, with goal to expand it to 70% by 2030. The digital shift accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic further signaled the need for reliable internet, as remote work, online education, and e-services became more prevalent in Moroccan society. CAIRO – 24 February 2025: Egypt is reinforcing its commitment to technology investment and digital transformation, securing its position among the top five African nations investing in technology in 2024, according to the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) of the Egyptian Cabinet. This achievement reflects the country's ongoing efforts to enhance digital infrastructure and improve the quality of digital life. In 2024, Egypt ranked third in technology investments across Africa, with $297 million invested in 89 deals, underscoring its growing influence in the continent's tech sector. Nigeria led the rankings, attracting $520 million in 103 deals, while South Africa followed in second place with $459 million across 67 deals. Kenya secured fourth place with $221 million from 59 deals, and Ghana completed the top five, recording $102 million in 17 deals. Beyond financial investments, Egypt has made notable advancements in the Digital Quality of Life Index 2024, a global measure that evaluates internet speed, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and the overall development of the technology sector. According to a report by Business Africa, based on data from the Surfshark Cybersecurity Company, the index reflects both the quality and accessibility of internet services in various African nations. A standout achievement for Egypt has been its continued leadership in fixed broadband internet speed across Africa in 2024, as reported by the Speedtest Global Index. This highlights the nation's efforts to expand high-speed connectivity and enhance its digital capabilities. The IDSC emphasized that Egypt's strong ranking in the digital quality of life index showcases the growing importance of investing in digital infrastructure.
