Forget The BMW Speedtop And Buy This Original Clown Shoe Instead

BMW recently revealed the Concept Speedtop, a while after the Concept Touring Coupe of 2023. Both have been thought of as modern interpretations of the M Coupe. That's because their two-door designs and stretched roofs mirror the profile of the original clown shoe. Unfortunately, the Touring Coupe isn't going into production and only 70 examples of the Speedtop will be produced; the latter is expected to cost around $500,000. If you don't have that much cash lying around, the alternative is to buy an original clown shoe, and a stunning example of this has just popped up for sale on Bring A Trailer. This 2002 BMW M Coupe is selling at no reserve, and the current bid is sitting on $77,000 at the time of writing with a few days left to run. It's finished in Estoril Blue Metallic over Nappa leather in a mix of black and Estoril Blue. Only 22 examples of the M Coupe came in this spec. The original owner in California cared for the car until 2025, and it accumulated a mere 7,000 miles in that time, so is not yet close to dangerous territory when it comes to the VANOS and rod bearing issues these S54 engines are infamous for. This year, the rearview mirror and shift knob were freshly replaced due to age-related visible wear, but otherwise, the car appears original. It still looks as unique as ever on its Shadow-finished 17-inch wheels, while the classic analog dials and old-school BMW Business CD sound system are typical of the period. The trio of physical climate controls reek of simplicity alongside today's iDrive setup, and these are matched by three gauges below. The star of the show here is the 3.2-liter S54 inline six-cylinder engine, sans turbos or any sort of electrickery. The outputs of 315 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque seem outclassed by today's standards, but it's the way this car revs to around 8,000 rpm that very few modern engines can match. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, and the car is fitted with a limited-slip differential. Engine oil, along with transmission and differential fluids, were all changed in preparation for the sale. The car has a clean CarFax report and a clean California title. Related: Dumb cars that are actually cool While manual BMWs are still around, everything seems heavy and overly complicated alongside this pure M Coupe. This little bread van can't hope to match the craftsmanship and V8 strength of the Speedtop, but its spirit is impossible to replicate in a modern car, and it'll be one lucky buyer that gets their hands on this example. Debuting at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy, the new BMW Speedtop coupe is a reinterpretation of the brand's shooting-brake legacy. Building on the BMW Skytop convertible, which was unveiled last year, BMW has now confirmed that the Speedtop will make the leap from concept to reality—with just 70 units slated for production. This limited edition is aimed at collectors and purists looking for exclusivity and muscular performance in a stunning, retro-inspired package. BMW Concept Speedtop: Design With a silhouette that harks back to the legendary Z3 M Coupe—affectionately dubbed the "clown shoe"—and elements from the Z4 coupe concept, the Speedtop blends modern aggression with nostalgic charm. Its three-door shooting-brake design gives it a distinctive stance, exuding elegance and athleticism in equal measure. The body is finished in a custom 'Floating Sunstone' gradient, a mix of silver and maroon that changes color with the light. The custom coating is highlighted by the two-tone, 14-spoke alloy wheels made for this concept. While last year's Skytop had a warm brown interior, the Speedtop goes with a white leather colour scheme for a touch of class and contrast throughout the cabin and luggage sections. BMW Concept Speedtop: Features The Speedtop's interior represents artisanal luxury. For the interior of the Speedtop, BMW has collaborated with highly regarded Italian leather artisans Schedoni, to develop custom, hand stitched travel cases that are consistent with the car's design aesthetics. These custom travel cases fit conveniently into leather strapped compartments located behind the front seats, making the Speedtop functional—as well as fantastic— for extended journeys. To further improve the cabin atmosphere, an ambient light strip has been incorporated into the cargo space—combining practicality and a touch of occasion. BMW Concept Speedtop: Specifications Beneath its sculpted hood, the Speedtop has some serious power to offer. Sharing its mechanical DNA with the BMW M8 Competition, it is powered by a 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 engine as stated with an imposing 460kW of power and 750Nm of torque. It's the most powerful non-electrified V8 in BMW's extensive lineup, with which we imagine will guarantee performance to match its exotic looks. While prices remain confidential, it is believed the Speedtop's price will well exceed the Skytop convertible's price of more than $570,000. Due to its rarity and ultra-custom, the Speedtop will likely become a collector's jewel in private collections internationally. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2024, Best SUVs in India. BMW Speedtop revealed as striking £430,000 shooting brake

Shark-nose front end combines with raked roofline and ducktail rear to create low-slung GT BMW has morphed the M8 Competition into a two-seat shooting brake for a special limited-run concept called Speedtop. Unveiled at the Villa d'Este concours, the wagon has been given a complete design overhaul compared with the car on which it is based, and it is set to be built in a small batch 'for collectors and enthusiasts'. Each example is expected to cost as much as £430,000. The Speedtop is closely related to the Skytop that was unveiled at the same event last year. BMW is positioning the new concept as a modern interpretation of the traditional shooting brake – a format it has revisited several times over the years, with production cars such as the Z3 M Coupé and Z4 Coupé, as well as 2023's Z4-based Touring Coupé concept. 'The BMW Concept Speedtop forms an intentional counterpoint to our current [production] models,' said BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. Speaking to Autocar at the unveiling, van Hooydonk said that ultra-low-volume specials play an important role as halo projects: "At BMW, I think we are in the business of creating dream cars and fulfilling those dreams every now and then. We've been doing so many show cars for so many years, also here at Villa D'Este for a few years, we've been able, every once in a while, to make these dreams come true. "We did this with the 3.0 CSL, with Skytop last year. Now with Speedtop, the chances are pretty good that we will do it again." He added that it's important to consider the future of the classic car market: "It's really to continue the tradition of the Concorso, because imagine this event in 50 years from now, what cars will be here on the lawn? It will not be a 3 Series, because we sell rather a lot of them." Production numbers, although not confirmed, are expected to match the Skytop's 50-unit run. Prototypes of that car – which is already sold out – have been spotted testing at the Nürburgring in Germany. BMW has told Autocar that both it and the upcoming Speedtop will be engineered to the same standards as its regular production models. ]]>
