Joe Brolly & Pat Spillane share contrasting predictions for All-Ireland final between Kerry & Donegal
JOE Brolly reckons Donegal are a near certainty to lift Sam Maguire - while Pat Spillane is backing his fellow Kerrymen. The Derry native has already been on the record about how 2 Kerry icon Spillane is giving the slight edge to the Kingdom 2 Brolly was far more definitive in his view He'd made that initial prediction about "not seeing any flaws" in Jim McGuinness' side on his But he expanded on why he's so gung-ho in that belief while appearing alongside Spillane and hurling greats Eddie Brennan and John Mullane on the The 56-year-old set out: "I think Donegal will win because they're multi-purpose. They're not relying on one individual. "They've worked with a basketball coach. McGuinness actually said it the week that the new rules were unveiled. Read More On GAA "He said 'We're going back to the old game, this is all about scoring rate.' They're scoring 1-27, 1-28, 3-25. "Paddy McBrearty was asked after the All-Ireland semi-final about how he'd be pushing for a place in starting fifteen and he said he'd be pushing for a place in the matchday 26! "There's massive competition there because Jim has this messianic quality." A few minutes later Spillane then gave his view that he'd marginally give the edge to the Kingdom. When he mentioned that Donegal had a few weaknesses, Brolly called on him to be more specific. Most read in GAA Football To which the eight-time All-Ireland winner replied: "Their running game is a hard game to sustain for 70 minutes. "Zonal defence is a weakness. There's space to be exploited there by a kicking team. Sharlene Mawdsley takes part in hilarious road race as part of Tipperary's All-Ireland celebration "The first half against Monaghan showed that as Monaghan switched the play from one side to the other. They'd an overload and took them on one-on-one and were very impressive. "So zonal marking, running in transition and Michael Murphy - no different from David Clifford - if he's contained (Kerry can win). "The new rules suit Kerry, Croke Park suits them as a heads up kicking team." He also added that his "hesitant vote for Kerry" was partly down to the weather forecast being good for Sunday with dry conditions further helping their prospects. The two counties did of course contest the 2014 decider with McGuinness saying this week that One instant improvement this time around will be that The Kerry county board have confirmed that Jack O'Connor's charges will line out in their alternative dark blue kit. Patriots linebacker preview: Built in the image of Mike Vrabel, this group could help the defense take a big step forward
Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up By the numbers: Advertisement 13: Elliss set a career high vs. the Bills on Jan. 5, with a 13 tackles, the most of the season in a game for any Patriot. 70: Tavai is the only NFL player in the last decade to play at least 70 percent of the snaps on offense or defense and 70 percent of the snaps on special teams, which he accomplished in 2023. The skinny: After an offseason of turnover, no area of the roster provides a better example of new coach Mike Vrabel's football philosophy than the linebackers. The Patriots acquired multiple players who might best be described as Vrabel guys in Spillane, Gibbens, and Landry. All of them played for Vrabel earlier in their careers. Advertisement Of the newcomers, Spillane figures to be a central figure. The former Raider was in the middle of the action at spring practices, and he saw his playing time increase when Tavai went down with a lower-body injury. Look for Spillane to wear the green dot on his helmet this season. Landry, who has 50.5 sacks in six seasons, should provide a boost off the edge in passing situations. Gibbens should provide depth in the middle, as well as special teams value. (He played almost 40 percent of the special teams snaps for the Titans in 2024). One new face that was a bit of a surprise this spring was Chaisson, as the former Raider and Jaguar flashed positively off the edge and could evolve into a nice depth addition. As for the impact returnees, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Jennings will be part of the conversation as an edge presence on early downs. Meanwhile, Tavai (who had a career-high 115 tackles in 2024) is looking to win back the fan base Elliss has had a career renaissance the last couple of seasons, going from fringe journeyman to every-down linebacker to being the subject of a mild bidding war between the Patriots and Raiders that saw him return to New England on a two-year, $13.5 million deal. He appeared to slot in nicely next to Spillane during spring practices, another sign his role will continue to grow. Advertisement In many ways, this is a group that is made in the image of Vrabel: not splashy, but smart, tough, and versatile. If they can be half as successful as Vrabel was when he played, it should help the defense take a big step forward. How does this position rate against the rest of the league? With the additions of Landry, Spillane, and Gibbens, this group probably went from the bottom third to near the middle of the pack. Quote of note: 'This is an exciting group to be around, and I'm excited going into this season. You just look at it, and you just feel the excitement and the production you could have going out there, and knowing everybody out there has that playmaking ability.' — Landry, speaking in June about the defense. Biggest story lines: Is Landry capable of delivering a burst off the edge as a complementary player for the likes of Keion White and Christian Barmore? In his first year with the Patriots, can Spillane grow into the leadership role that's usually asked from an inside linebacker? Will there be a battle for the other inside linebacker spot opposite Spillane? Christopher Price can be reached at

Patriots' Robert Spillane Opens up on Playing for Mike Vrabel
Patriots' Robert Spillane Opens up on Playing for Mike Vrabel originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the New England Patriots' major, yet possibly under-the-radar free agent signings this offseason was linebacker Robert Spillane. The former Las Vegas Raider signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Patriots to be their starting inside linebacker in 2025 and beyond. Advertisement Spillane seems like the perfect fit in New England under new head coach Mike Vrabel, as he's known as one of the toughest, most down-to-earth players in the league. The veteran linebacker went undrafted in 2018 and signed with the Tennessee Titans. However, he didn't see the field until 2019 when he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Spillane spent four years in Pittsburgh, progressively improving with more playing time each season. In 2023, Spillane signed with the Raiders and has broken out in the last two seasons. In his first opportunity to start every game of the season, Spillane collected 306 tackles, 17 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, and five interceptions over the last two years. His performance was enough for Vrabel, the former linebacker himself, to bring Spillane to New England to be an anchor on defense for the new-look Patriots. New England Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane discusses his recent free agent addition to the Patriots with the media at Gillette Canha-Imagn Images But this isn't the first time the two have connected. They have a history going all the way back to high school recruiting. Advertisement "It's a full-circle moment being here. (Vrabel) recruited me out of high school at Ohio State," Spillane told WEEI's Ted Johnson. "He gave me my first opportunity with the Tennessee Titans eight years ago as an undrafted free agent. Just to be signed to be the middle linebacker here and to play meaningful snaps means the world to me." It's safe to say Spillane is beyond excited for the opportunity with the Patriots and ready to try to leave his legacy in New England. "I don't want to let him down. He's the type of coach that any player wants to play for," Spillane said. "He encourages people to follow their dreams, to love their families, and to love football. What more can you ask for from a coach?" Spillane's leadership spoke volumes during his time with the Raiders, and he's already developing that leadership role with the Patriots. A quality his head coach holds in high regard. Advertisement Throughout OTAs and minicamp, the Patriots' inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has been filling in for new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. During that time, Spillane has taken on some of the coaching responsibilities for his position to lift some of the weight off his coach's shoulders. Spillane's leadership and all-around football character are the perfect match for Vrabel and the new culture the Patriots are trying to build. It's only the first year under the new regime, but the culture shift and young talent have excitement brewing in New England. Robert Spillane's ascent: The unexpected leader fueling the New England Patriots' defensive turnaround
Photo byWhen the New England Patriots retooled their defense this offseason through a wave of free-agent additions, there was no question about the talent influx. But with so many fresh faces and young players on the roster, one big question lingered—who would step up and lead this group? Surprisingly, that answer might already be clear. Robert Spillane, the veteran linebacker formerly with the Raiders, has emerged as the unexpected vocal anchor of the Patriots' defense—and he's doing it in a way few saw coming. Robert Spillane is quietly becoming the heart of the New England Patriots' defense, stepping into a leadership role during a pivotal offseason Robert Spillane arrived in Foxborough without much fanfare, but his presence is already being felt throughout the Patriots' offseason program. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr—currently overseeing the defense in place of Terrell Williams, who is recovering from illness—pointed to Spillane as one of the players calling plays in the huddle. Kuhr is relaying calls from the sidelines directly into Spillane's helmet, and from there, the veteran has taken on the task of commanding the defense. This type of leadership is precisely what the Patriots needed. While New England's defense is stocked with talent—names like Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, and Milton Williams stand out—it still required a stabilizing voice in the huddle. Spillane, now entering his seventh NFL season, appears ready to fill that role. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo What makes Spillane's rise even more impressive is how unassuming his style is. He's not the kind of linebacker who racks up a dozen sacks or makes flashy highlight plays. But when things begin to unravel or momentum shifts during a game, he's the type of player who can get teammates back on track—an underrated but essential quality. The Patriots may not have planned for Robert Spillane to be the defensive tone-setter, but that's exactly who he's becoming. In a unit searching for consistency and leadership, especially while their coordinator is sidelined, Spillane is stepping up. For a team looking to escape the bottom of the AFC East, having a calm, experienced voice at the heart of the defense could prove to be a game-changer. Respect isn't always earned through stats—and Spillane is proving that every day in Foxborough.
