Hry CM set to inaugurate ‘Sports Mahakumbh' on Aug 2

1 2 Chandigarh: Haryana's minister of state for sports, Gaurav Gautam, on Thursday informed that due to the state govt's excellent policy and consistent medal wins at national and international events, Haryana has emerged as a sports hub. "Despite representing only 2% of the country's population, Haryana's athletes contribute to 60% of India's medal wins at international competitions. Continuing this legacy, the Sports Mahakumbh 2025 will begin in two phases starting August 2, with 15,410 athletes participating in 26 different sports," the minister said. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini will inaugurate the event as chief guest at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula, on Aug 2. The first phase will run till Aug 4. While addressing the press conference at the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh, the sports minister expressed pride that Haryana athletes won medals in each of the past five Olympic Games, bringing home 15 medals and making the nation proud. He added that the 26 sports will be hosted across four locations. It includes athletics, badminton, basketball, handball, and hockey in Panchkula, shooting and taekwondo in Faridabad, boxing, netball, and football in Rohtak, and lawn tennis in Sonipat. Athletes from all 22 districts and Haryana Sports University, Rai (Sonipat), will participate. In both phases of the event, a total of 2,102 medals will be awarded — 836 in the first phase and 1,266 in the second. The second phase will be held in the last week of August. The minister highlighted that Haryana's Sports Mahakumbh will be bigger than many national-level sports events. For comparison, around 8,000 athletes participate in the Khelo India Youth Games organised by the Sports Authority of India, while over 15,000 will compete in this Mahakumbh. MSID: 123022407 413 |

Asian Games prep: SAI forms 3 martial arts committees

Representative image (Photo by) NEW DELHI: Aiming to maximise India's medal prospects at the Asian Games in Japan next year, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has formed three committees to oversee the preparations and selection of athletes in three martial arts disciplines — karate, kurash and jiu jitsu. The move was necessitated as the sports ministry does not currently recognise any of the national federations for administering these sports. The Karate India Organisation (KIO), Indian Kurash Association (IKA) and Ju-Jitsu Association of India (JJAI) are affiliated to their respective world bodies but have not yet been granted recognition as NSFs by the ministry. For karate, the SAI appointed D K Mittal, executive director (regional centre Guwahati), as chairman along with eight other members including those part of the technical conduct committee. For kurash and jiu-jitsu, Abhishek Singh Chauhan, director (regional centre Bhopal), was named chairman with eight other members on the panel. In an official circular issued by SAI – a copy of which is with TOI – the core responsibilities of the committees include 'handle the selection of athletes, conduct coaching camps for participation in international competitions among others. With sweeping powers to CEO, IOA dynamics may change

Short backgrounder Just to jog readers' memory, the feud between the EC and IOA president PT Usha started last year in January when she placed the appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer with the EC for ratification. Initially, according to the IOA president, the EC agreed her proposal with a rider; to renegotiate CEO's salary, which the EC thought was too high. The IOA president then endorsed the appointment saying it was done after renegotiating the salary. However, India's worst phase of sports administration hit its nadir when the feud turned into an ugly public spat. There were multiple forces in action. Things were different then. The sports minister was different, so was the sporting ecosystem. The sports ministry had a different secretary. The Sports Authority of India was all powerful with its top officials overseeing almost all sporting programmes including the Annual Calendar for Training and Competition. The NSFs looked feeble. Just to put some context, the way athletes' commission members were elected before IOA election in 2022 seemed a bit weird. The first part of the nomination of elections was conducted from the premises of the SAI. 'The voting shall take place on 14.11.2022 (Monday) between 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at VIP Lounge of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex, Pragati Vihar, New Delhi 110003,' read the returning officers' notice on electing athletes commission. It is common knowledge that of the 40 odd applications of top athletes from different disciplines all but 10 withdrew overnight. And they in turn selected the eight Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit. Two persons from the athletes commission had voting rights in the general assembly along with the eight SOMs. The EC right from the beginning led by the senior vice president, joint secretary, vice president and others wanted to assert themselves, something that did not go down well with Usha and she was forced to appoint an Executive assistant.

Avinash Sable undergoes ACL surgery, doubtful for 2025 World Athletics Championships

India's national record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, Avinash Sable, has completed a successful surgery for an injury in his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus. However, the recovery period — usually six to eight weeks for a typical ACL injury — renders him doubtful for the World Athletics Championships, set to take place between September 13 and 21. 'During the Monaco Diamond League, I suffered an ACL and meniscus injury to my right knee. It's a tough setback, but I'm determined to do the hard work and come back stronger,' Sable wrote on Instagram. Sable failed to finish the men's 3000m steeplechase event in Monaco as he fell during the water jump early in the race. He was seen clutching his lower thigh area just at the back of the knee as he left the race. 'I've completed my surgery under the expert care of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team at Kokilaben Hospital, to whom I'm grateful beyond words,' Sable added. 'I also want to thank the Athletics Federation of India, TOPS, Sports Authority of India, the Inspire Institute of Sport, Nike and JSW Sports for standing by me during this period.' Sable, whose national record stands at 8 minutes 09.91 seconds, finished 13th in the Xiamen DL on April 16, was eighth in Keqiao — also in China — before a DNF in Monaco. Though the sports ministry had approved Sable's training in the USA to prepare for the World Championships, the surgery casts doubt on his availability at the event in Tokyo.

Supreme Court quashes criminal proceedings against shuttler Lakshya Sen in case of fabrication of birth certificate

Lakshya Sen (Image credit: X) New Delhi : In a relief to badminton players Lakshya Sen and his brother Chirag Sen, the Supreme Court on Monday quashed criminal proceedings initiated against them on allegation of fabricating their birth certificates to participate in the underage tournament, after noting that there was no evidence to prove it and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had already given them a clean chit after holding inquiry and medical tests. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar allowed the plea of the brothers for quashing the FIR. It said the suggestion that a criminal investigation was necessary to test the allegations 'rings hollow.' Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
