Dilip Vengsarkar's open challenge to Shubman Gill: I don't know whether he can break Don Bradman's record
In just his first Test series as captain, Shubman Gill has reached a stage where every run he scores can elevate him to greatness. With 565 runs in just two Tests, including two centuries and a double-hundred, Gill has shattered plenty of records and eyes a plethora more, the holy grail being the late great Donald Bradman's humongous tally of 974 runs – the highest-ever in a series. Gill knocked off quite a few records during his marathon innings of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, including most runs scored by any Indian in the first two Tests of a series and the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain, among many more. However, two more landmarks await: Sunil Gavaskar's 771 runs is the most scored by an Indian batter. And given the rich vein of form he is in, it is only a matter of time before he gets there, until something goes horribly wrong. Shubman Gill eyes more records in Lord's, Manchester and The Oval(PTI) As for the big Bradman Everest, with 390 runs still needed, former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar believes it's too early to judge whether Gill will reach that milestone. While Vengsarkar, who knows a thing or two about scoring a Test century at Lord's, has no doubt in Gill's ability – and he really hopes the skipper gets there – there's an iota of doubt in the mind of the Colonel. Also Read: Shubman Gill achieves career-best Test ranking after 430-run epic at Edgbaston, Joe Root loses No.1 spot "Well, he is in great form, and he is an outstanding batsman. I hope he does that. I don't know whether he will do it, but I am sure that he has an opportunity. He is in great form, and he should do it, that's what I feel. But then, what is important is not chasing a personal milestone. Because we are obsessed with personal milestones, which is wrong. The important point is to win matches for our country. That is what matters. And the impact of innings or a spell is what matters in the ultimate analysis," PTI reported Vengsarkar as saying. "He did very well as a captain, as a batsman, it was very important that he scored runs so that he could call the shots and lead from the front, which is very important, and he has done that. He is an experienced player. He is a world-class batsman, and he showed that in England." Sunil Gavaskar backs Shubman Gill Unlike Vengsarkar, though, Gavaskar is confident in Gill's ability to at least break his record. It was during India's 1970/71 tour of the West Indies that Gavaskar, in his debut series, smacked the mighty West Indies around for 774 runs in four Tests. The Little Master, in fact, believes that the hallowed turf of the Lord's could very well be the venue where Gill becomes part of Indian more piece of Indian folklore. "I think, at Lord's is where probably it will happen," Gavaskar told Sports Today. "And really a worthy contender because there is a purity of technique in his batting. He's got all the shots in the book. And more importantly, he has got this wonderful opportunity to shoulder the responsibility of playing the way that the team needs. So clearly, records are meant to be broken. I would be delighted that another SG takes that record."

Ignored India Star Ends Big Selection Debate For 1st Test Against England: "Go With..."
Veteran pacer Umesh Yadav has batted for the selection of all-rounder Shardul Thakur in Team India's playing for the 1st Test against England, starting Friday in Leeds. The Shubman Gill -led side have a choice to make between Shardul and Nitish Kumar Reddy as the fourth-choice pacer in Headingley. Shardul impressed during Team India's intra-squad practice match last week as he scored an unbeaten 122 and was also amongst the wickets. During a recent interaction, Umesh stressed on the fact that Shardul's previous experience of playing in England could come in handy for the visitors. "If you go with an extra fast bowler, I would go with Shradul Thakur. He has played in England before. Can bowl 10-12 overs in a day, and he can bat as well. So, he is experienced," Umesh told Sports Today. Umesh also weighed in on India's bowling line-up, suggesting that there is plenty of experience when it comes to pace bowling options. "There is firepower, for sure. You have Bumrah, Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna and there are other guys as well. You have also selected Shardul Thakur, who can swing the ball and also bats deep. There is Nitish Kumar Reddy and Arshdeep as well. Bumrah and Siraj have played a lot of cricket but they would be needing some support from one of the new bowlers. When they need rest, the third pacer is going to be key. If the third bowler can support them well, it would be good for the Indian team," he added. Umesh, who is currently on the road to recovery from a leg muscle injury, said that he is eyeing a comeback after proving his worth in domestic cricket. "Efforts to make a comeback are complete. I cannot select myself. I will have to play some matches, get fit. To come back, I will have to play competitive cricket. My effort is to get fit and come back in the team," he said.

BCCI Promised To Make Virat Kohli Test Captain Again But Later Changed Mind: Report
Last Updated: According to a report, Kohli was given a hint that he may be made the captain of the Indian Test cricket team again during the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Virat Kohli is India's most successful captain in Test cricket. Since taking charge of the Indian team in December 2014 to stepping down from the role in January 2022, Kohli led India in a total of 68 Test matches and won 40 of them, which is the most by an Indian. Kohli, who was expected to feature in a five-match Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, took to Instagram on Monday (May 12) afternoon to announce his retirement from the five-day format of the game. Kohli's decision to quit Test cricket with immediate effect at the age of 36 came as a shock for fans around the globe. But now, a couple of days after his retirement from Tests, it has been reported that he wanted to become captain of the Indian Test side again and was promised as well by the BCCI for the same, but later the board changed its mind. According to a report, the 36-year-old was given a hint that he may be made the captain of the Indian Test cricket team again during the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A video report by Sports Today stated that Kohli was hinted at a return to captaincy, and this happened after India lost the day-night Test inside three days in Adelaide under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. 'At least people close to him do seem to suggest that he was given sort of a hint that he would be getting captaincy after Adelaide. But then things changed," the report said. The report added that Kohli was still hopeful of getting back the captaincy, and for that reason he also played a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Railways at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, as mandated by the BCCI. But in April, he was told that he was being as a player, and then he decided to retire. First Published: May 15, 2025, 23:07 IST

BCCI To Take A Call On Sunil Gavaskar's 'IPL With No Cheerleaders, DJs' Suggestion: Report
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) set to resume to resume on Saturday, May 17, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar urged the BCCI the remaining 17 matches without cheerleaders and DJs. According to a report, the BCCI is now seriously considering the suggestion made by Gavaskar. IPL 2025 was suspended for a week on May 8 amid cross-border tensions with Pakistan following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. The heinous attack claimed the lives of as many as 26 civilians. According to a report in India Today, the BCCI will soon take a call on staging the remainder of IPL 2025 without entertainment and glamour. "The Indian cricket board will make a decision after Sunil Gavaskar urged the BCCI to stage the remaining 17 matches without cheerleaders and DJs," the report said. As a gesture for those who died during the Pahalgam attack, Gavaskar felt that there should not be any entertainment (apart from the sport on display) in the remaining IPL 2025 matches. "What I would really like to see is, these are the last few matches. I think we have had about 60 games or thereabouts. I think it is the last 15 or 16 games. I would sincerely... because of what has happened and some families have lost their near and dear ones, I would like all the show-sha baji that goes with it to not be there. Just the game to be played. Let there be crowd but no music. Let's not have the DJs screaming in the middle of an over. None of that," Gavaskar told Sports Today. "Let's just have a tournament, the balance of a tournament. No dancing girls, nothing. Just cricket would be a really nice way to respect the sentiment of the families who have lost their near and dear ones." It is worth pointing out that the match during the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, players from both teams donned black armbands to mourned the victims, while there were also no cheerleaders and fireworks. The players had also observed a minute's silence to pay their respects to those affected by the incident that has drawn international condemnation. Listen to the latest songs, only on
