Van Orden in favor of getting rid of Spring Elections

MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – In an interview with Wis-Eye, Congressman Derrick Van Orden says that he is in favor of getting rid of Wisconsin's Spring Election. Van Orden says Spring Elections are inefficient, waste money on campaigns, and they cause voter fatigue. Van Orden noted that Republicans do not vote in Spring Elections. He believes Spring Elections could be rolled into Midterms or Presidential Elections. 'Republicans don't vote. We just don't vote. Period. In Spring Elections. I don't think we should have a Spring election. I think we need to… these guys in the State House, I think they should get rid of that and fold it into a midterm or a four-year cycle.' This comes after Republican (GOP) backed candidates like Eric Hovde and Brad Schimel lost high-profile races in recent elections. Wisconsin's Spring Elections are currently required by the state's constitution and are written into state law. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Fond du Lac School District's operational referendum denied by voters

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – On April 1's Spring Election, voters in Fond du Lac denied the School District's operational referendum that would have authorized the District to exceed the revenue limit by $10,000,000 per year for four years. Officials with the Fond du Lac School District (FDLSD) say the unofficial result of the referendum vote was 9,617 for 'no' and 8,452 for 'yes.' $197.8 million referendum narrowly passes in Oshkosh The proposed referendum funds would have allowed the District to maintain operations, cover maintenance expenses, and provide security upgrades. 'The District will be unable to move forward with the planned investments without the referendum funds,' FDLSD officials stated in a release. The community provided us feedback on what they expect the District to do, and we will make necessary cuts to address our deficit. The reduction in operational dollars the District is facing will lead to changes in how we deliver education to our students. We have made incredible progress over the last four years, and we owe it to our students, families, staff, and the Fond du Lac community to provide the best educational opportunities for students. Without these funds, the District will need to make modifications and tough decisions, so we can continue to change outcomes for our students. Additionally, we will not be able to make the necessary security improvements at the high school. Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fleig, Fond du Lac School District Democratic-backed Wisconsin state schools chief Jill Underly wins reelection over G0P-backed rival Fleig said the next step for the District would be to work with the Board of Education to make necessary cuts and determine how it can best serve its students and staff moving forward. La Crosse Voter Turnout for Spring Election

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – According to the La Crosse City Clerk's Office, around 16% of registered voters used absentee ballots for the Spring Election. However, the number of voters visiting polling centers in person was higher than a normal Spring Election. La Crosse City Clerk Nikki Elsen says, 'I think there's contests on the ballot that have drawn a lot of interest to voters. We've got some local contests. We've got the state contests that have really interested a lot of voters. So that just brings them out in higher numbers.' La Crosse's 2023 Spring Election had a 53% turnout. The City Clerk's Office says that the last Spring Election Mayoral Race in 2021 saw a 28% voter turnout. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. WI Supreme Court candidates on the campaign trail

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – With just 5 days until the Spring Election, both state Supreme Court candidates are continuing their campaign trails across the Badger State. After meeting with voters at the Republican Party Headquarters in Altoona the previous night, Judge Brad Schimel and former Governor Scott Walker stopped at the Menard's Distribution Center in Eau Claire. When asked about his opponent Susan Crawford, Schimel suggested she hasn't been transparent with Wisconsin voters, 'She hasn't told them an awful lot about her history, hasn't told them about her time as Governor Doyle's chief legal counsel, hasn't talked much about her time in private sector where she spent a lot of time suing the people of Wisconsin over laws that were passed.' Judge Schimel's Save Wisconsin bus tour also made stops in La Crosse and Marquette Counties. Meanwhile, Susan Crawford held an event in Oneida County, holding a meet and greet in the town of Woodruff. She talked to voters about her past growing up in a working-class family and how that has impacted her decisions as a judge. Crawford says, if elected, she would be a fair and impartial justice, adding that she believes her opponent does not have the best interests of Wisconsinites in mind, 'The other choice, the other person on the ballot is running to advance a partisan agenda, he's said he's going to be part of Donald Trump's support network on the court, that's not what our courts are for, we need to make sure that we're standing up for the integrity of our courts as well.' The Spring Election is Tuesday, April 1st. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Donations in WI Supreme Court race

MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – As the Spring Election quickly approaches, the discussion of money used to back the candidates for Supreme Court is a hot topic. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, $73 million has been spent from groups outside of the state to influence the election. Notably, the Democratic backed candidate Susan Crawford has received support from billionaire philanthropist George Soros. While reports say Elon Musk has spent more than $14 million to boost Brad Schimel's campaign. Despite the amount of money being spent on this race, both candidates say they will remain impartial. Crawford says, 'The way I look at it is, any legitimate organization or any individual who wants to support my candidacy, I welcome that. They just need to know I will be fair and impartial. I'm not going to make any promises.' Schimel says, 'I'm not offering anything to anybody else. There's no promise of how I'm going to rule on a case or that I'm going to favor this person or that person or disfavor another person.' The Spring Election will take place on Tuesday, April 1st.
