Best In Show Tigers Receive Reinforcements Ahead Of Holiday Weekend
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. The Detroit Tigers have the best record in Major League Baseball and enter the weekend leading the American League Central by 9 1/2 games, and they just got stronger. Outfielder Matt Vierling has been battling shoulder issues since spring training, but he was reinstated ahead of Saturday's contest against the Minnesota Twins, according to Jason Beck of CLEVELAND, OHIO - OCTOBER 07: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers hits a double in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Guardians during Game Two of the Division Series at Progressive Field on October... CLEVELAND, OHIO - OCTOBER 07: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers hits a double in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Guardians during Game Two of the Division Series at Progressive Field on October 07, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio More Photo byVierling missed 51 games at the start of the season after suffering a right rotator cuff muscle strain in Spring Training before returning for four games on May 23. Vierling would later head back to the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Vierling is set to return to the field and play centerfield on Saturday for the Tigers after playing seven games with Triple-A Toledo in a rehab assignment. Vierling's rehab assignment got a little sidetracked when the outfielder missed time with a stomach bug, but he is cleared to return to the Major League lineup. The Tigers have been experimenting with multiple options at both third base and center field during Vierling's absence, with Javier Baez getting the bulk of games in center and Zach McKinstry manning the hot corner. With the trade deadline approaching, Vierling's return could sway the balance in the area of the team that the Tigers decide to target first with many media outlets speculating they will try to move for a third baseman. Vierling and Baez could temper trade expectations for a new third baseman in the Motor City. More MLB: MLB Insiders List Orioles All-Star Outfielder Probable To Be Traded At Deadline

Frankie Montas ready to be a Mets solution as injuries hammer rotation
Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free Frankie says relax. Despite posting a gruesome 12.05 ERA over his six minor league rehab appearances, Frankie Montas said Monday there is no need to fret as his Mets debut approaches. 'Adrenaline is going to kick in,' said Montas, who is scheduled to start against the Braves on Tuesday. 'The numbers weren't what I wanted, but health-wise it's been pretty good. And to be honest I feel like I am ready to go out there and compete.' Montas, who arrived on a two-year contract worth $34 million that includes an opt-out after this season, joins a rotation in need following his rehab from a high-grade lat strain that has kept him sidelined since spring training. The Mets in the past 1 ½ weeks have placed Kodai Senga on the injured list with a right hamstring strain and lost Tylor Megill to elbow inflammation. The team went one start with rookie Blade Tidwell last Friday until Montas was ready. But Montas' last two rehab starts in particular for Triple-A Syracuse were hardly inspiring. Included was a clunker in which he lasted only 1 ²/₃ innings and surrendered eight earned runs. He followed with a final performance in which he allowed five earned runs over five innings. 'I really wasn't worried about the numbers,' Montas said. 'I was worried about trying to work on my pitches so when I get here I am ready to go and have no limitations.' Mets pitcher Frankie Montas signs autographs at Spring Training, Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST In 30 starts for the Reds and Brewers last season, Montas pitched to a 4.84 ERA over 150 ²/₃ innings. The right-hander appeared in only one game for the Yankees the previous season following shoulder surgery. Montas, whose lat strain was diagnosed in February, said he isn't surprised it took him this long to return. 'It was a big injury, kind of serious,' Montas said. 'They took the time and they did an amazing job getting me back to my old self. My [velocity] is back and I feel pretty good and I felt like they took the right amount of time to make sure I was pretty healthy.' Mets pitcher Frankie Montas (47) speaks at a media availability at Citi Field, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST From manager Carlos Mendoza's perspective, the Mets are adding a significant rotation piece. 'He was a guy that when we signed him in the offseason he was going to be a big part of this rotation,' Mendoza said. 'I remember when we played Milwaukee in the playoffs, he was pretty nasty the way the ball was coming out, the way he was using all his pitches. 'I have seen him pitch for a lot of years at this level and have success. The expectation is he will go out there, compete and give us a chance to win a baseball game every time he takes the ball, starting [Tuesday].' Montas' return is just Step 1 in what the Mets hope will be a retooled rotation: Sean Manaea is scheduled for a potential last rehab start with Syracuse on Wednesday. The lefty Manaea, who has been rehabbing an oblique strain since spring training, could possibly face the Brewers next week at Citi Field. Montas is just glad to step in at a time it's needed. 'Every team goes through one of these stretches at least one time a year when things are not going their way,' Montas said. 'We have a good group of guys here, they look out for each other and are trying to help each other. 'I'm excited just to help. When you are doing rehab, you feel like you are not able to help the team get a win. It doesn't feel good, but if I am on the field, I have a pretty good chance to help and that is what I want.'

2025 MLB Prediction, Pick: Back Giants to Conquer NL West
Last week, the Red Sox shocked the baseball world by sending three-time all-star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster trade. The trade came just hours after the Red Sox swept the Yankees with a 2-0 victory, a game in which Devers homered. All seemed well in Red Sox land, as they had pushed themselves over .500 and looked to be on track to finally fulfill their pre-season potential. So, what happened, and is there a bet to be made going forward based on this deal? Let's take a look. Well, Devers' unhappiness has been well-documented, dating back to Spring Training when there was much discussion about what position Devers would (and wouldn't) play, since free-agent acquisition Alex Bregman plays third base, the same position as Devers. An unhappy player with a lofty contract was enough reason for the Red Sox to unload the lefty slugger. Still, the seemingly modest package of pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, as well as a couple of prospects headed to Boston, is what made this deal such a head-scratcher. The Red Sox trio of elite prospects, Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, now have one less roadblock in their daily playing path. That is another benefit to what is still, despite the explanation, a baffling move and an underwhelming return for a Red Sox team that has also dealt Mookie Betts and Chris Sale in recent years, with very little to show for it. As far as the Giants, they receive a desperately needed left-handed presence in their lineup. They now have a boosted offense that can support a dominant 1-2 punch in their starting rotation, with pitchers Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. They now sit with World Series odds in the 34-1 range for those that think they can win it all, and have 18-1 odds to reach the World Series. But the market that interests me is the NL West, as the Giants now have 19-1 odds to win the division at FanDuel Sportsbook. Yes, they would have to topple the behemoth that is the Los Angeles Dodgers . But with the Dodgers' inability to keep pitchers healthy (Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki are just some of their pitchers on the injured list, with no timetable to return), the defending champs are vulnerable. Yes, they are still the best team and the rightful favorite, but they're not the invincible juggernaut they looked like heading into the season. At 19-1 odds, with a newly acquired Devers, and perhaps more moves up their sleeves, the Giants have the ability to compete with the mighty Dodgers and possibly erase the modest four-game deficit. Of all the numbers available, Fanduel's 19-1 odds to win the NL West is the most attractive, especially considering this number is in the 8-1 range at most other books. Taking a shot on the Giants to beat out the Dodgers in the NL West, as they did in 2021, will make for an exciting summer wager. Giants Predicted to Move Rafael Devers Back to Old Role After Blockbuster Trade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco Giants have put the rest of Major League Baseball on notice with a shocking win-now trade acquisition. After emerging as one of the better teams in the sport this season, the Giants addressed their biggest roster need in blockbuster fashion by adding franchise slugger Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. The Giants reportedly have taken on Devers' remaining $250 million salary, but gave up relatively little in terms of talent to land him. It seems that a primary reason Devers was traded away was his unwillingness to shift around the diamond on defense. After the Red Sox moved him to a designated hitter role to accommodate new teammate Alex Bregman at the start of the season, the team lost Triston Casas to injury and asked Devers to move to first base. Devers refused and criticized the team for asking, but now he could resume his third base duties for the Giants. (Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston) More Malhorta/Getty "I think that's a conversation that we're going to have with him," president of baseball operations Buster Posey told Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area when asked about Devers' potential defensive role. The Giants' best defensive third base option, Matt Chapman, will be sidelined for a few weeks with injury. The team is also in need of a first base upgrade, with journeyman Dominic Smith recently taking over the position. But offensively, the Giants have been projected to slot Devers into a familiar role as the cleanup hitter. "Though Devers has only batted No. 2 in the order this year, I think that has more to do with the Red Sox, rather than that being Devers' preferred hitting spot," Wynston Wilcox predicted for FanSided. "Last season, Devers hit primarily out of the No. 4 position and was extremely productive. I think with a new team, he'd be open to going back to the power slot." With Devers moving back to the cleanup spot, the Giants could push Smith to the bench and swap Wilmer Flores into the field at first base and out of the designated hitter position. No matter how they rearrange things, though, Devers is bringing a mighty bat to the Giants' lineup. More MLB: Insider Reveals Red Sox's Reasons For Dumping Rafael Devers in Devastating Trade
