Jesse Kriel 'excited' to skipper Springboks
Jesse Kriel will captain South Africa for the first time against the Barbarians after regular skipper Siya Kolisi withdrew because of injury on Friday. Kriel, 31, made his debut for South Africa in 2015 and has played in 79 Tests, featuring in the Springboks' 2019 and 2023 World Cup triumphs. 'I'm excited and honoured,' said the Yokohama centre before admitting to a touch of anxiety. 'Although I was a little nervous at one stage, I'm keen to go out there and lead the team. 'One of the big aspects of our team is that everyone takes ownership in their areas on the game, so this match won't be any different for me on Saturday. 'Fortunately, we have a lot of leaders in guys like Lood (de Jager), Malcolm (Marx), Damian (de Allende), Cheslin (Kolbe), and Kurt-Lee (Arendse), so having them in the team will make my job easier.' Saturday's match is a non-cap game against a Barbarians side, renowned for its running ethos. Jesse Kriel insisted, however, that they were taking the exhibition game as seriously as any international. 'We are certainly approaching this match as a Test and we have no doubt it will set the tone for the season ahead,' he said. Bulls flanker Marco van Staden has been drafted into the starting back row as a replacement for Kolisi for Saturday's meeting in Cape Town and will partner up with Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez. Kolisi's injury was described as a 'niggle' and the two-time World Cup winning captain will hope to be back for the two-Test series against Italy, which starts in Pretoria on July 5. The Springboks have a further match against Georgia in July before the opening match of the Rugby Championship against Australia in Johannesburg on August 16. Kick-off on Saturday is at 17:10. 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel (captain), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Jean-Luc du Preez, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Jean Kleyn, 3 Asenathi Ntlabakanye, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche Substitutes: 16 Marnus van der Merwe, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Neethling Fouche, 19 Franco Mostert, 20 Kwagga Smith, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Manie Libbok, 23 Andre Esterhuizen. 15 Melvyn Jaminet, 14 Mark Telea, 13 Leicester Fainga'anuku, 12 Peter Umaga-Jensen, 11 Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkins, 10 Josh Jacomb, 9 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 8 Shannon Frizell, 7 Sam Cane, 6 Peter O'Mahony (captain), 5 David Ribbans, 4 Ruben van Heerden, 3 Paul Alo-Emile, 2 Camille Chat, 1 Cian Healy Substitutes: 16 Ricky Riccitelli, 17 Hassane Kolingar, 18 Will Collier, 19 Josh Beehre, 20 Hoskins Sotutu 21 Santiago Arata, 22 Joe Marchant, 23 Lachlan Boshier Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

"We are certainly approaching this match as a Test and we have no doubt it will set the tone for the season ahead," he said. Bulls flanker Marco van Staden has been drafted into the starting back row as a replacement for Kolisi for Saturday's meeting in Cape Town and will partner up with Vincent Tshituka and Jean-Luc du Preez. Francois van Coke and Robbie Wessels unveil 'Bokbefok', the ultimate rugby anthem for Springboks fans
Acclaimed musicians Francois van Coke and Robbie Wessels have recently unveiled their much-anticipated rugby anthem 'Bokbefok'. Image: Supplied The world of South African rugby is buzzing with excitement as acclaimed musicians Francois van Coke and Robbie Wessels unveil their much-anticipated rugby anthem 'Bokbefok'. Coinciding perfectly with the Springboks' clash against the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town for the Qatar Airways Cup this Saturday, June 28, the song promises to energise fans and enhance the electric atmosphere surrounding this notable fixture. In a playful exchange that set the stage for the anthem's release, Wessels had been teasing Van Coke on social media with hints of a boxing match, only for fans to discover that the real heavyweight contest would be fought in the musical arena. The result is a spirited rugby anthem sure to resonate deeply with supporters. "BOKBEFOK is now available everywhere," the duo proclaimed on Instagram, embracing the anticipation of rugby aficionados and music lovers alike. Video Player is loading. Both artists have shared the stage multiple times, forging mutual respect and fan following. Their shared passion for rugby provided the natural momentum to create an anthem that embodies the zeal of South African fans. 'Both of us are huge rugby fans,' Van Coke explained. 'It turned out to be a rugby song.' Given their shared passion for rugby, the decision to pen a rugby anthem together was a natural progression. Van Coke recalled the moment he embraced Wessels' title suggestion, 'Bokbefok'. 'I'm down with the title because I'm in a band called Fokofpolisiekar. But are you ready?' he asked, to which Wessels confidently retorted, 'I'm ready.' Wessels passionately believes that 'Bokbefok' stands as a landmark achievement in rugby music: 'If you take the song 'Hie' Kommie Bokke' and you multiply it with 'Die Bloubul' song and you multiply it with 'We Are the Champions', you are still not even close to the 'biggest rugby song of all time' that has just arrived.' Fans' reactions to the release have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressions of delight flooding social media. Comments include, 'The collab we didn't realise we needed,' and 'Damn!! No, what can the goats do with the release other than win this weekend!' Another chimed in, 'Omg, the World Cup won't be back until 2027, boys ... You're warming us up early.' This outpouring of support highlights the value of the collaboration and its potential impact as the Springboks prepare for their crucial match.
