16-year-old run over in street after fight at rooftop party, Missouri cops say
A 16-year-old boy was fatally hit by a car after a fight broke out at an 'unsanctioned' rooftop party, Missouri police said. The fight in St. Louis between two groups of people in front of the apartment building stemmed from an argument over whether to let in a group of people believed to be armed, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said in a June 17 news release. Gunfire was exchanged in the early hours of June 15 as the two groups argued in front of the apartment, police said. Then, a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk as the passenger fired gunshots, officers said. A 16-year-old boy, identified as Daniel Stahl of Springfield, was fatally struck, police said. 'He was a beloved son, brother, nephew, and friend. He had dreams, a future, and a life that was stolen far too soon,' family wrote in a GoFundMe. St. Louis police said a 29-year-old woman was also shot and struck by the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The 26-year-old driver accused of running over the teen and woman was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, police said. The suspect's identity was not revealed by police.

Police prepare for ‘No Kings' protests
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Thousands of protests against the Trump administration are scheduled to take place around the country this weekend, including in the St. Louis area. The No Kings protests have been planned for more than a month to coincide with the U.S. military parade planned for this weekend. But with anti-ICE protests sparking violence in Los Angeles recently, this movement is getting extra attention. 'I think a lot of people are rightly concerned. They see Gov. Kehoe announcing that we are in a state of emergency. That's alarming but people see what's happening in LA. They're seeing what's happening to immigrants in the country and they're worried,' said Indivisible St. Louis co-lead Laura Gordon. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Protests are scheduled all over the area, including ones at Kiener Plaza, Manchester Road & South Weidman Road, Mid Rivers Mall Dr. and Sue Mandy Dr. in St. Peters. Gordon helped organize one demonstration in Ballwin, where she says thousands are likely to attend. 'From our end, we've already coordinated with police, we have medics on the scene, we have lawyers on the scene. We're also telling people, ''this is peaceful,'' she said. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) is preparing, too. 'The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will utilize all means necessary to protect our community. The safety of everyone—demonstrators, residents and visitors—remains our top priority,' the department said in its release. Brothers charged in Webster Groves and Eureka car break-ins Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe also activated the Missouri National Guard in anticipation of civil unrest. FOX 2 reached out to the guard for more information on how they will be invloved but has not heard back. 'I absolutely trust the governor here to keep Missourians safe. It's the first duty of government to keep law-abiding citizens safer. I support him and I support law enforcement. We have terrific law enforcement in Missouri,' Senator Josh Hawley said. Gordon said if the guard does show up, she hopes it'll also serve as extra protection for peaceful protesters. 'It's easy to see this as an escalation of violence but at the end of the day, I support our military. I want our veterans to have rights and care,' she said. The Ballwin protest starts at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Kehoe appoints native to oversee STL City board of police commissioners
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced a new appointee to oversee the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's (SLMPD) citizen-led board of police commissioners. St. Louis City native Derek Winters will serve as the Transition Director. According to the Governor's Office, Winters will work with St. Louis City officials, SLMPD, Missouri's Department of Public Safety and other entities. Winters' overall focus is ensuring an efficient transition to a citizen-led board, which is expected to assume control over SLMPD before July 1, 2026, as well as minimizing citizen conflicts in the city. 'It is an honor to support the process of building a board that supports our men and women in uniform, reflects the City's values, and is equipped to meet its responsibilities from the start.' House Bill 495 establishes a board of police commissioners that consists of six members, including St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer, to guide the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD). The Governor's Office will announce the remaining commissioners in the coming weeks, with Kehoe responsible for appointing each member. SLMPD Police Chief Robert Tracy acknowledged Winters' new role and said he is in full support of Kehoe's decision. Tracy said SLMPD's priorities surround maintaining public safety, supporting officers and serving St. Louis City. Winters has a professional background in leadership, and he previously served as a commissioner on the St. Louis City Board of Elections and board chair of Saint Louis Makes. 'This transition team requires leadership rooted in accountability, professionalism, and a clear sense of purpose. Derek brings all of that, and we are confident in his ability as a highly skilled operations professional to help build a strong foundation for the board and its long-term role in public safety,' Kehoe said. Spencer released a statement in response to the new Transition Director: 'I spoke to the governor's office and have full confidence that this appointment doesn't change the chief's ability to lead the City of St. Louis' police department this weekend and in the future. While the governor and I disagree on the issue of local control, we share the common goal of a successful SLMPD, and I look forward to meeting with Mr. Winters in the near future,' Spencer concluded.
