Rob Lowe, 61, Says Sequel to Iconic '80s Movie Is ‘Really Getting Good'
Rob Lowe, 61, Says Sequel to Iconic '80s Movie Is 'Really Getting Good' originally appeared on Parade. There's an update on the sequel to one of the Brat Pack's biggest movies! Rob Lowe revealed that he's been working on a followup script to 1985's St. Elmo's Fire. "We're working on the script, and it's really getting good,' Lowe told People in an interview published on June 29. "I think it's super valid to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life, because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — 'What do I do when I get out of college?'' Lowe starred as Billy Hicks in the film, alongside Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson and Mare Winningham. The Outsiders star previously revealed that he and Moore have talked about what it will be like to revisit their characters from St. Elmo's Fire. 'She has a pseudonym that she goes by, which I can't say, because then it wouldn't be a pseudonym,' Lowe said in an appearance on Kelly Ripa's 'Let's Talk Off Camera' podcast in October 2024. "And we're very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo's Fire sequel." 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 He added that the sequel was 'moving along,' but that it was 'going a little more slowly than [he] would have liked.' 'But that's a good thing because we're trying to find the right writer and the right story. But all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody is excited,' Lowe continued. 'I think now, the theme of St. Elmo's Fire today is that it's never too late for happiness. Our kids are out of school and maybe some of us have been divorced and maybe somebody has been falling ill — all the things that you deal with as you get to our ages, this is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people know and love. And I think as opposed to just a money run, let's just reboot it because people know the title of it. I actually think there's a lot to be said about why we're doing it. And I'm super excited about it. Hopefully we can pull it off." St. Elmo's Fire, it's more than just a classic movie
St. Elmo's Fire is a term you may have heard before because of a 1985 "Brat Pack" movie. St. Elmo's fire is a somewhat rare type of weather, too. A look at the rare type of weather known as a "St. Elmo's Fire." Getty Images St. Elmo's fire is a discharge of electricity in the Earth's atmosphere. It looks sort of like lightning, but it can appear in different colors. The National Weather Service says this phenomenon happens when a sharp object comes into contact with areas with an extraordinarily high electric field and a large number of electrons. You will notice it has a weird name, and that gives some clues to where it was first noticed. The statue of St. Eramus of Formia, a patron saint of sailors Getty Images It is named St. Elmo's Fire after St. Erasmus of Formia, one of the patron saints of sailors. Ships would see St. Elmo's fire on masts when out to sea. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says this electric glow is known as a corona discharge. It occurs when the air surrounding a conductive object is briefly ionized by the electrically charged environment. While St. Elmo's Fire and lightning can look very similar, there are differences. Getty Images Jase Bernhardt, an associate professor and director of sustainability at Hofstra University, told CBS News, in a previous report, that lightning is a direct movement of electrons from the cloud to the ground. St. Elmo's fire is like a sparking effect, where electrons cover a much smaller distance. The view of a St. Elmo's Fire from the cockpit of a plane Getty Images Ships are not the only location where St. Elmo's fire can show up. Planes, utility poles, the tops of tall buildings, church spires, and even the tips of umbrellas can have St. Elmo's Fire! When this phenomenon shows up, there is usually a strong likelihood of lightning. That means it is time to get indoors until the atmosphere settles down. St. Elmo's fire isn't necessarily dangerous itself, but it is usually an indicator that the ingredients for lightning are around you, though. It is best not to take a chance by staying outside. For planes or ships, it is usually not dangerous either. The Hong Kong Observatory reports that seeing St. Elmo's Fire was thought to be lucky because you were being protected by St. Erasmus of Formia. However, if you are on open water, it is time to get inside the ship if you can to avoid any bad luck that lightning might bring.

My favourite 80s coming-of-age classic hits 4K Blu-ray for the first time ever – and with all the Dolby Atmos and Vision bells and whistles
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. We all know the No.1 hit theme song by John Parr, we all know Emilio Estevez and his fellow Brat Pack gang… and hopefully we all know the movie that followed hot on the heels of fellow Brat Pack coming-of-age classics Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. 40 years to this very month after hitting theaters, St. Elmo's Fire has today been released on 4K Blu-ray for the first time, and has been given the Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound treatment. Directed by Joe Schumacher, who went on to direct The Lost Boys and Batman Forever, and starring many of that gang – Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Andie MacDowell – the teen flick follows a clique of recent college graduates as they adjust to the growing pains and responsibilities of adulthood, trying desperately to keep their friendship and youth intact by hanging out at their favourite watering hole, St. Elmo's Bar, while trying to launch their careers and establish themselves and their relationships. It's a quintessential, all-in coming-of-age drama of its era and a very 'real' movie about self-absorbed college kids grappling with the post-university transition. Critics panned St Elmo's Fire for its unlikeable characters and petty melodrama – but that's bratty college kids for you, right? What Schumacher did was play out a friends drama that, in my opinion, managed to incorporate all the new and relatable emotions of that uncertain and place-finding time in your life – the innocence, the love and the jealousy, the simultaneous feelings of freedom and restraint – through interesting (but sure, not largely likeable) characters, via the most magnetic and compatible bunch of young actors and actresses of that moment. The cold-stone classic of the Brat Pack genre was well made and produced back then, shooting for mainstream appeal, but it was high time for it to get the 4K treatment. The 4K Blu-ray, which has been released today in special 40th-anniversary format, features a 4K scan of the original 35mm film negative, and is bolstered with Dolby Vision (and HDR10) HDR, while the stereo audio has been Dolby Atmos-fied for those with Atmos soundbars or compatible speaker packages – because who wouldn't want to hear Rob Lowe's iconic saxophone scene in surround sound? The disc also features commentary with Schumacher and a separate special featurette with him, the original 'making of', the theme song (Man in Motion) music video, and 12 deleted scenes. Consider me sold.
