At 9.45am Rome time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced: "Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis." Wales has been resonating with tributes and condolences for Pope Francis, who was known for his dedication to the service of the Lord and his church. Tributes have been pouring in from across the country for Pope Francis (Image: PA Wire) The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St David in Cardiff opened a book of condolence for people to pay their respects. "As First Minister of Wales, and as a Christian, I offer my deepest condolences to the Catholic community in Wales and around the world." Ms Morgan praised Pope Francis for his "unwavering humility, courage and profound compassion". She said his advocacy for the poor, marginalised and displaced, and his emphasis on the fight against poverty, climate change and injustice as a moral calling, would be remembered. She added: "In a world that often feels divided, Pope Francis built bridges of unity and his legacy will endure in the lives he touched and the values he championed - values that continue to inspire us here in Wales." Mark O'Toole, who was named archbishop of Cardiff-Menevia by Pope Francis in 2022, described him an "exceptional shepherd of the Church". He said: "By the manner of his life, Pope Francis has always challenged me to be a better, more faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. "We now entrust him into the merciful hands of the Lord whom he has served so faithfully and generously. "We accompany him with our prayers on this final journey." The sentiments of the Welsh community were echoed by the locals who were touched by the Pope's leadership. One person said: "He led with humility and grace in a world that is divided. "I think the world will really miss his leadership, and I can only hope that his legacy will be respected and remembered." Pope Francis was the first non-European Pope for nearly 1300 years (Image: PA Wire) Pope Francis was the first non-European Pope for nearly 1,300 years since Gregory III, an 8th-century Syrian. He was also the first Pope from the southern hemisphere and the first Pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus. His papacy was characterised by a series of reforms aimed at reshaping the Catholic Church, from changing decision-making processes to rooting out financial corruption in the Vatican Curia. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales and Archbishop of Westminster, said: "The death of Pope Francis brings great sadness to so many around the world, both within the Catholic Church and in societies in general." He praised the Pope's focus on the mercy and compassion of God, and his desire to see membership of the Church as being rooted in "missionary discipleship". The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales will celebrate Requiem Masses for the repose of the soul of the late Pope in their cathedrals. Prayer cards have been distributed to Catholic parishes throughout the two countries. As the world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, his legacy of inclusivity and love continues to inspire. He encouraged young people to chant "Todos, Todos, Todos," "Everyone, Everyone, Everyone," at World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2023, stating: "That is the Church. There is room for all."
