AFL 2025: St Kilda coach Ross Lyon on on succession plan

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. St Kilda coach Ross Lyon steered clear of earmarking assistant Corey Enright as his potential successor, declaring the decision 'above my pay station'. Enright was reported as unofficially next in line for the Saints' senior coaching role once Lyon's tenure finishes. The former three-time premiership Cat has served as an assistant at St Kilda since 2022 alongside Robert Harvey, Jared Rivers and Brendon Bolton. Lyon joked that Enright could have the role now ahead of the Saints' tough trip west to take on Fremantle before praising the club's intent to build its entire coaching panel. 'We certainly elevated Corey to senior assistant, we work really closely together,' he said. 'He can have it today if he likes, I'm not sure he would want to go over to Perth, in all seriousness, we've got some really high-end assistants. 'What we're building here on and off the field, we'd like to get an alignment and continue it on in perpetuity, really, and ultimately end up the best Saints ever. 'If Corey is part of that, that would be great, I've just got to stay in the present and keep working – we've got a real philosophy we want to develop all our people. Corey Enright has worked at St Kilda since 2022. Picture: Michael Klein 'Serious football clubs develop their people … all our assistants are required to do it, Corey went to Harvard last year (for) an authentic leadership course. 'We'll continue to grow him, there's nothing, anything in writing, an agreement, but Robert Harvey's coached senior football, Brendan Bolton (as well), we've got a really experienced panel.' Lyon said stability was important in luring and maintaining key players, perhaps alluding to the likes of Max King and out-of-contract gun Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera. But he handballed the decision as to whether Enright would be St Kilda's next senior coach to the club board and executives. 'It's above my station in life and at the club, it's certainly not something that is present and front of mind,' he said. Ross Lyon (right) speaks to Lenny Hayes (centre) and Enright. Picture: Michael Klein. 'Obviously, contract negotiations players want to know where I'm at, which is nice right, then the club extended me for a year. 'A part of that is what stability, if you don't go on, will there be and we just think we've got people who can step into it at the right time if that's appropriate. 'It's an executive and board decision, ultimately. There will a process run, there's no mandate anywhere. Theoretically, it's a nice theory, we like it.' AFL: Carlton great Brendan Fevola calls for mass changes at Princes Park

A club icon wants major change at Carlton. Hall of Fame forward Brendan Fevola has called for 'new people' at Princes Park after another horror loss on Thursday night. The Blues' faithful showed their angst after the 50-point loss to Port Adelaide, vandalising club headquarters in protest of another failed campaign. Fevola, much like the vandals, took aim at the board more so than under-siege coach Michael Voss. 'Something is wrong, something is going on, the board needs to go, I've been saying that for ages, the board is just there for themselves,' he said on his morning radio program, Fifi, Fev & Nick. 'Get new people in; get old Carlton people in. Blokes like Fraser Brown who would be amazing on the board. 'Everyone is saying, 'Sack Vossy, Vossy needs to go', and I'm like, 'No, I don't think that's the go'. 'It gets to a point where you go, 'I don't think the players are playing for you, mate'. If you're playing for a coach, you don't put up what you put up in that first half. 'They're putting up nothing, they didn't kick a goal for the whole first half. 'They don't look like they've got a system; but they do have a system, they train and they train hard. They're just not performing.' Carlton was second on the ladder by half a game at round 19 last year but have mustered just seven wins since. Fevola said the Blues' win return had not matched the strength of their list. 'They have the players; if Vossy and the assistants were coaching West Coast, you'd go … 'Well, they just don't have the cattle, they're rebuilding',' Fevola said. 'Carlton were premiership favourites at the start of the year (and) they're not even going to play finals, their season is over. 'I don't know what's wrong with Patrick Cripps, he looked sore last night. I would just put them all on ice and say you're done, get your body right for next year.' Fevola also took aim at out-of-contract big man Tom De Koning, who has been heavily linked to St Kilda on the AFL's most lucrative deal. Fevola said the Blues must demand an answer from De Koning and sideline him if he is not committed to staying. 'The problem is they have Tom De Koning, who is in our top three players. He's been offered $12m to go to St Kilda and Carlton can't match that,' he said. 'If he's going, don't play him; say to him that he needs to make a decision now and if he can't answer that, say you're in the twos – get some young kid to play in the ruck. 'This has been going on all year and it's what everyone talks about; if he doesn't want to stay, just be honest.' AFL 2025: Ross Lyon doubles down on Marcus Windhager defence

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has again defended tagger Marcus Windhager after his highly documented role on Collingwood star Nick Daicos. Windhager was issued a $1500 fine for his shove to the chest of Daicos in the opening 10 seconds of their entertaining battle last Saturday night. Lyon post-game asked whether there were two sets of rules for certain players and said he would seek clarification from the AFL on two early free kicks. He gave little away about the umpire explanation on those free kicks but said the league was poised to make a windfall after setting the benchmark for fineable contact. 'It's set a high standard for contact, hasn't it? It's really interesting. That's interesting in itself, there's going to be a lot of fines in the AFL,' he said. All eyes were on the Daicos-Windhager battle on Saturday night. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images 'Marcus was in the rules, I think the umpires just tried to stamp stuff early, there's a lot of noise. 'Collingwood come and supported, Marcus was physically grabbed and dragged off, he gets some clarity, put your hands in the air so it's easy to see you're getting tackled without the ball in the stoppage.' Windhager was critiqued for parts of his coverage of Daicos, specifically the apparent knee to the back of the Magpie's hamstring. Lyon bristled when asked if Windhager would use those 'tactics' this Sunday against any of Fremantle's midfielders. 'Just to be clear, what are the tactics? I don't quite understand … sorry for going out and competing, I thought you were allowed to compete in the AFL,' he said. 'I never knew playing on someone was a tactic, manning up at the stoppage; since Adam was a boy people have played and great midfielders get tighter attention.' Windhager kept close tabs on Daicos. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images Fremantle ball-winner Caleb Serong said he would 'embrace' the company of Windhager if he was St Kilda's target. 'If it's really challenging, then you to go to the levers you can pull around stoppage and the team things that we'll work on,' Serong said on Thursday. 'But first and foremost, you've got to embrace it and stick to your guns.' Lyon responded to Serong's comments in trademark fashion. 'Terrific. Well done, Caleb,' he said.
