Ipswich Town sign Rennes midfielder Azor Matusiwa

Ipswich Town FC have signed Rennes defensive midfielder Azor Matusiwa (27), both clubs have announced. Matusiwa signed for Rennes from Ligue 1 rivals Stade de Reims eighteen months ago, but the former Netherlands U21 international has mostly failed to replicate the form that earned him a €15m move to the Bretons. L'Equipe understands that Rennes and the EFL Championship side agreed on a €11.5m transfer fee. Matusiwa penned a four-year deal with Ipswich Town FC. The Dutch midfielder featured 47 times with Stade Rennais. Les Rouge et Noir are currently trimming their squad down under the guidance of newly-named Sporting Director Loïc Désiré. Matusiwa had reportedly no guarantees from head coach Habib Beye regarding his playing time. Advertisement GFFN | Bastien Cheval

Rennes interested in Marseille's Quentin Merlin

Stade Rennais may be in the market for a left-back. The Breton club have already sold Adrien Truffert to Premier League side Bournemouth. Their back-up, Mahamadou Nagida, is inexperienced. At just 20, he may be judged to be too inexperienced to inherit Truffert's role. A recruit could therefore be sought after during the current transfer window. L'Équipe understands that they are showing an interest in Olympique de Marseille left-back Quentin Merlin (23), who just had a convincing campaign away with the France U21 side at the Euros. His future at OM is uncertain. Advertisement Whilst behind the scenes, there are those who want Merlin to remain at the club, OM are looking to raise money to fund their transfer window. He is a player that Marseille can turn a profit on. There is also interest from abroad, L'Équipe understands. Borussia Mönchengladbach are one of several Bundesliga sides interested in the Frenchman. Robin Risser completes move from Strasbourg to Lens

Robin Risser (20) has completed a move from RC Strasbourg Alsace to RC Lens. The France youth international has signed a five-year deal with the side. Lens have already lost two goalkeepers this summer. Hervé Koffi has left to join SCO Angers on a loan deal, whilst Mathew Ryan departed following the expiry of his short-term deal with the club. He was brought in to compensate for the departure of Brice Samba, who left Les Sang et Or to join Stade Rennais in January. Advertisement There has now been further change between the sticks, although this arrival is one made with the long term in mind. Risser, a France U21 international, impressed while on loan with Red Star in Ligue 2 last season. He has now joined Lens. The deal is thought to be worth €3m, plus another €2m in bonuses. BlueCo-owned Strasbourg have retained a 25% sell-on percentage on the goalkeeper. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Sidelined Real Madrid star spotted back in team training

An injured member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has late this week linked back up with his teammates in group training. The player in question? Eduardo Camavinga. Midfielder Camavinga has for his part been sidelined since back in April, owing to a muscular injury. Advertisement En route to a 1-0 La Liga downing of Getafe, the Frenchman pulled up with a groin concern, which was later confirmed to have brought a premature end to his 2024/25 campaign. The initial assumption was that Camavinga would likely also be ruled out of the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA. After reports began to surface in the media that the 22-year-old was ahead of schedule in his recovery over the last week, though, on Friday, the news which those of a Real Madrid persuasion were awaiting was finally forthcoming. As showcased below, Camavinga has returned to team training alongside the rest of Xabi Alonso's squad. Queens Park Rangers appoint former Rennes boss Stephan as head coach

Queens Park Rangers have appointed Frenchman Julien Stephan as head coach to replace Marti Cifuentes, the English second-tier club said on Wednesday. Cifuentes was placed on gardening leave in April and officially left the club on Monday following a season in which they finished 15th in the Championship, just seven points clear of the relegation zone. Stephan, 44, steered Stade Rennais to the Coupe de France in 2019 as well as their first Champions League qualification in 2020 during his first spell at the Ligue 1 club. He then spent 18 months at Strasbourg between 2021-23 before returning to Rennes, with his second stint there ending in November last year after they won only three of their first 10 league games of the season. "QPR is a historic club with strong values and passionate fans, so I feel honoured," Stephan said in a statement. "I wanted to come here because I know there's a lot of passion around the club and around the team, and I feel very lucky to discover that."
