Our priority is to speed up implementation of government schemes: Chief Minister Stalin
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Saturday that his top priority was to speed up the implementation of government schemes that were lagging and to meet the expectations of the women and youth he had interacted with during his tour on June 25 and 26. 'In all districts, at least one family has benefitted from the schemes of the DMK government in the last four years. I interact with people to understand the benefits that have reached their districts and the employment opportunities created through industries,' he said, writing about his experience in the Vellore and Tirupattur districts. Mr. Stalin asserted that he does not get carried away by praise and was always open to constructive criticism and willing to make corrections. 'I reject criticism that stem from hatred,' he added. Seeking to put an end to reports that Minister Duraimurugan was no longer in his good books, the Chief Minister said it was a great experience to travel with Mr. Duraimurugan and hear about his political journey. 'He has worked with Anna and Kalaignar, and he continues to work with me. That proves his commitment,' he said. Mr. Stalin also appreciated the arrangements made by Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu during his visit to Tirupattur, where he unveiled the statue of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He also recalled his emotional one-on-one meeting with Killai Ravichandran from Cuddalore. 'The path of the Dravidian movement is clear — it connects party cadre with the people. It will overcome all obstacles and unite everyone under one front,' he added.

The Academy, known globally for awarding excellence in cinema through the Oscars, announced its 2025 invitee list on Friday, comprising 534 artists and executives who have made significant contributions to the world of film. Kamal Haasan was listed in the Actors category, with the acclaimed films 'Vikram' and 'Nayakan' noted beside his name. Kamal Haasan is only the second South Indian actor to be invited to join the Academy, following actor Suriya, who was invited in 2022. Over 72,000 houses built under Tamil Nadu scheme to make state 'hut-free'
The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday informed that 72,081 houses have been built under 'hut-free Tamil Nadu by 2030' programme, and the construction of the remaining houses was under progress. During the Budget for 2024-25, the government announced the 'noble goal' of creating a 'hut-free Tamil Nadu' by 2030, and that eight lakh concrete houses would be built in rural areas to replace huts. An assistance of Rs 3,50,000 each was provided to the beneficiaries under the scheme. Nearly Rs 7,000 crore was sanctioned for the construction of two lakh houses in two years (2024-25 and 2025-26). "So far, 72,081 houses have been completed. The construction of the remaining houses is in various stages of progress," the government said in a release here. Provisions have also been made for the needy beneficiaries to receive loan assistance of up to Rs one lakh through banks. On the repair and reconstruction of houses in seven districts affected by cyclone and floods in 2023, the release said Chief Minister M K Stalin has ordered to sanction Rs 168.14 crore to reconstruct 3,591 fully damaged houses at an estimated cost of Rs 4 lakh each and to repair 1,057 partially damaged houses of upto Rs 2 lakh each. Out of a total of 4,648 houses sanctioned, 4,159 houses were completed and the construction of the remaining 489 houses was under progress. "M K Stalin assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021. Various schemes implemented through the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department such as Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, Kalaignarin Kannavu Illam, Namakku Naame Thittam, Sanitation schemes, and drinking water connection schemes have elevated rural areas in Tamil Nadu on par with urban areas, making the state a pioneer for other Indian states," the release said. "It is a well-known fact that Tamil Nadu consistently receives awards from the Union Government and accolades from the media," it added. Following the footsteps of late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Stalin is implementing various progressive schemes for the advancement of rural areas in Tamil Nadu, including roads, drinking water schemes, housing, and Periyar Ninaivu Samathuvapuram (Periyar Memorial Equality Villages). "These schemes serve as a guide for other Indian states," the release stated and highlighted the numerous schemes. Under the Chief Minister's initiative to improve rural roads in Tamil Nadu (Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam) introduced during 2022-23, Stalin sanctioned the improvement of 20,000 kms of rural roads for Rs 8,000 crore. So far, 9,696 road projects covering a length of 12,572 km have been improved at an estimated cost of Rs 4,609 crore. Further, 6,671 Kilometers of roads are being improved at an estimated cost of Rs 3,529 crore. HR&CE dept schools get an infrastructure boost as CM Stalin unveils new buildings
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday inaugurated additional classrooms, and other educational infrastructure built at a cost of Rs 13.94 crore, in two schools run by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department in Kilpauk and Choolaimedu. An official release said Stalin inaugurated a new multi-storey school building for Ekambaranathar Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Kilpauk, built at a cost of Rs 11.15 crore. He also launched the upgraded facilities at Anjugam Primary School, Choolaimedu, at a cost of Rs 2.79 crore. The CM also distributed Rs 10,000 as educational assistance to 252 students of Classes 10 to 12, provided schoolbags with educational materials to 1,131 students, and gave bicycles to 166 students. As a token of appreciation, 10 students each received financial aid and schoolbags, while 40 students received bicycles. He also visited classrooms and laboratories, interacted with students, and observed teaching and practical sessions. Temples under the HR&CE department are not only religious centres but also serve society by running schools, training centres, care homes, and health facilities. Currently, 25 schools and 10 colleges (including a polytechnic) run by temples impart education to 22,455 students. Over the past four years, Rs 138.13 crore has been spent on upgrading educational infrastructure in these institutions. HR and CE Minister PK Sekarbabu, heads of Dharmapuram Adheenam, Kundrakudi Adheenam, Mayilam Bommapuram Adheenam, Sri Embar Jeeyar Mutt of Sriperumbudur, Velakurichi Adheenam, Chenai Mayor R Priyar, MLAs, and senior officials were present on the occasion.

Tamil society honours writers who champion social progress, says CM Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday said creators must be celebrated during their lifetime and pointed out that Tamil society has always recognised and honoured writers who champion social progress and upliftment. In that spirit, he said, former CM and DMK president M Karunanidhi not only made exceptional contributions to Tamil literature, but also encouraged and elevated other creators. He was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day 'Centenary Seminar on Muthamizharignar Kalaignar M Karunanidhi' jointly organised by Sahitya Akademi and Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) Special Centre for Tamil Studies. Stalin said the event marked the 'recognition of Kalaignar as the literary face of India'. Highlighting initiatives to support writers, Stalin noted that the state has implemented the Kanavu Illam scheme to provide houses worth Rs 1 crore each to Sahitya Akademi award-winning writers. 'So far, 15 scholars have benefitted from the scheme. Continuing this initiative, houses have now been allotted to 10 translators who have also received the Sahitya Akademi awards,' he said. 'No other state has introduced such a scheme.' Stalin also recalled that during his tenure as CM, Karunanidhi nationalised the works of 108 Tamil scholars and distributed royalties worth Rs 7.76 crore. 'In the past four years, I have nationalised the works of 36 Tamil scholars and distributed Rs 4.25 crore in royalties,' he added. 'These seminars should not only celebrate Kalaignar but also inspire the creation of a society with egalitarian ideas and progressive thoughts, as he envisioned,' Stalin said. He further noted that Karunanidhi had created a Tamil chair at JNU, which has now developed into a full-fledged department. 'We have allocated Rs 5.30 crore for it, and steps are under way to install a statue of Thiruvalluvar at JNU,' the CM added. JNU vice-chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit praised Karunanidhi's contributions to literature and cinema, saying, 'In turning language into resistance, cinema into conscience, and literature into liberation, Kalaignar became more than an icon -- he is a legend.' She added the Thiruvalluvar statue at JNU will be unveiled by Stalin.
