Spreading the Fringe further across the city makes a lot of sense

The Stand comedy club celebrates its 30th year with a special exhibition With only three weeks to go until the start of this year's Fringe there's already a sense of excitement among creative businesses in the city. The year-round venues like The Stand and Monkey Barrel are already giving a big push to their Fringe line-ups, and there's still another 20 days until the opening night. In two weeks' time, like it or not, it will be impossible to ignore it. It looks like there is going to be much livelier Fringe presence in the New Town this year, which can only be a good news for local businesses and festival punters alike. There is a much more relaxed vibe north of Princes Street, away from the mayhem on the other side of town. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Old Town, particularly the Cowgate, is well beyond saturation point. With crowds spilling off pavements onto the roads, getting from A to B on foot is time-consuming and dangerous. Likewise, the University quarter is similarly over-crowded, despite the Teviot Building undergoing renovation. Queues at bars and food outlets in these parts of the city can be prohibitively long. It's exciting to be out and about among crowds of people, but the festival experience is somewhat diminished if you have to wait in line for 15 minutes to buy a pint. It will make for a better atmosphere city-wide if the Fringe has a larger geographical spread. This year, for the first time there will be events in St James Quarter and at Edinburgh Street Food next to the Omni Centre. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Free Festival are opening new venues alongside the Assembly Rooms in George Street and St Andrew Square Garden will be hosting shows once more, which is very welcome news indeed. The Famous Spiegeltent returns there for the first time in eight years and The Stand are staging an exhibition which charts the 30-year history of this Scottish comedy institution. This will include some fascinating archive photos of the club's beginnings, plus some audio and video material which can be accessed by scanning a QR code. The Stand itself will have a full programme in its four venues on York Place, including my show. On sale now. Only three weeks to go.

If You're a Mac Mini Owner, This UGREEN Dock Is a Must-Have Prime Day Deal, and It's Going for Peanuts

Apple's accessory game is usually pretty strong, but sometimes you find a third-party device that's custom made for an Apple computer that works so seamlessly that it makes you wonder how Apple didn't design it themselves. In the case of the UGREEN Mac Mini M4 Dock and Stand, be glad for that — instead of paying Apple prices, you get this amazing extension device for a Prime Day price of just $60. Plug your M4 Mac Mini into the UGREEN dock and stand, and it looks like it came straight from the factory with your Mini. They stack together perfectly, and the UGREEN has the same sleek, curved design as the latest M4 Mac Mini. What it adds to your already formidable compact desktop computer, however, is where the fun really starts — a huge array of high-speed extension ports, and an ingenious enclosure for a SSD that transforms the UGREEN dock into a massive external storage device. See at Amazon The UGREEN dock connects to the M4 Mac Mini with a neat, unobtrusive built-in 4cm USB-C cable that can't be seen from the front of the computer. The dock has a silicone anti-slip pad on its top so the Mac Mini is securely placed and won't slide off the dock. When stacked, the M4 Mac Mini and UGREEN dock and stand look like one unit. The M4 Mac Mini comes with three built-in Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, and a Gig Ethernet port, which is all well and good. But the UGREEN dock and stand turns a modestly connectible compact desktop computer into a true superhub of productivity. There are 11 ports in total — three USB-A 3.2 ports, two USB-A 3.0, three USB-C 3.2, and a SD and MicroSD card reader that reads and writes at 170MB/s, all in the same compact package that looks like it's already part of the Mac Mini. All of the UGREEN's ports are easily found — 4 in the front and 6 in the back — but the secret weapon is at the bottom of the dock and stand. There's an enclosure for an M.2 NVMe SSD drive, which you can add up to 8TB of external storage to your Mac Mini. The NVMe SSD is not included, but the stand supports PCI Express, NVM Express, and NVM3 M.2 drives. Installation is a simple plug-and-play, and the drive sits securely within the UGREEN port. Once installed, the UGREEN port moves data back and forth with the Mac Mini at a blistering 10Gbps. The M4 Mac Mini is an impressive desktop computer all on its own, but the UGREEN Dock & Stand elevates it to an entirely new level of storage and connectivity with one simple connection. It's a Prime Day bargain at just $60 right now at Amazon. See at Amazon

Christian rock band respond to former member's drug abuse, sexual assault allegations

Nashville-based Christian rockers Newsboys are responding to troubling news regarding their 59-year-old former lead singer, Michael Tait. In a post on the group's official Instagram account, the Australian-founded band responded to allegations of drug abuse and inappropriate sexual conduct against Tait while also distancing him from the band. "Last night, our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait. While Michael has not addressed these allegations, we are devastated even by the implications," the statement read. "First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward. We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault." The quartet noted that as husbands who are fathers of 14 children in total, they were "horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years." In January 2025, Tait, who was the lead vocalist of the group for 15 years in their four decades of existence, offered the following in a statement: "Fifteen years ago, my life was forever changed when I received the invite to step into the role of lead singer for Newsboys. The years since have been some of the most fulfilling, faith-filled, and rewarding years of my life." "I have been on an amazing journey all over the globe, performing and ministering to people of all ages, races, and backgrounds." "The decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but admist prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision," the statement continued. In their June 5 statement, Tait's former bandmates, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis and Adam Agee, noted that when he left the band, he "confessed" to them and their management that he "had been living a double-life." Through a nearly three-year-long investigation by The Roys Report, it was discovered that for two decades, Tait befriended three young men on Christian music tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. The trio were all 22 at the time of their first interaction. Allegations of Tait, then two decades older than his accusers, engaging in acts of sexual assault and grooming highlight the lengthy of June 5, Tait has not officially responded to the allegations on his social media accounts or the statement from his former bandmates. As well, there have been no further comments from the group. Upon their 2021 release of "Stand," their 20th studio album, the band spoke with The Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network. It's noted that when Grammy-winner Tait, formerly of DC Talk, replaced Peter Furler as the group's new lead vocalist in 2009, the band no longer had any original members in its ranks.
