McBrien return for second stint at Dungannon Swifts

Darragh McBrien has returned for a second spell at Dungannon Swifts after being released by Linfield. McBrien joined Linfield from the Swifts on a two-year deal in August 2023 in a move which involved Ethan Devine switching to Stangmore Park on loan until January 2024. Advertisement The forward made 26 appearances in his first term with the Blues, scoring three goals and helping the south Belfast side win the BetMcLean Cup. McBrien's game time was limited last season however, making just six Premiership appearances and not featuring since November. The 23-year-old is looking forward to another stint at Stangmore Park as part of manager Rodney McAree's squad. "I had some trouble with injury towards the back end of last season so I wanted to come in and get a bit of training under my belt," McBrien told Dungannon Swifts' social media channels. "I got that training and then had some positive talks and I'm delighted to get it over the line. "I want to come in here, get a lot more games and show everyone the level that I can get back up to."

LEAGUE OF IRELAND Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the signing of striker John McGovern from NIFL Premiership club Dungannon Swifts. Rovers paid a fee to Dungannon which will remain undisclosed, each club has confirmed, with Dungannon saying that McGovern departs Stangmore Park 'with every blessing from everyone involved at DSFC'. Former Down Gaelic footballer McGovern, 22, scored 20 goals in all competitions for Swifts last season, opening the scoring in their Irish Cup final against Cliftonville which they eventually won on penalties. The Ballyholland native won a Tailteann Cup and an Ulster U20 title with The Mourne County but chose to pursue soccer over Sam Maguire football this summer. 'John will give us real depth in that forward area of the pitch and another dimension,' Bradley said. 'His age profile means he's one for now, but also the future. 'We tried quite a bit over the last year to sign John, but it wasn't possible. He was at University and Dungannon weren't ready to sell at that moment in time. So, it was a case of continuing to monitor John, and thankfully, we've got him in now. 'We could have moved in on other players in the previous window, but we wanted to wait on John as he was someone we'd monitored for quite some time.' McGovern's transfer is subject to subject to international and domestic clearance which, when approved, would allow the Down native to be available for selection from 1 July.

Dungannon's 2024-25 season in review

2024-25 League position: 4thPlayer of the season: Gael Bigirimana2024-25 Review: The campaign will surely go down as the best ever witnessed at Stangmore club had finished fourth in the top-flight twice previously in the 1990s, both under the stewardship of current manager Rodney McAree's father Joe, but their Irish Cup triumph over Cliftonville was a first for the memorable scenes at Windsor Park on the first Saturday of May have brought deserved praise upon the club who have delivered major silverware, broken into the top six, and will play in European football all on a budget that ensures they need to promote youth and rely on astute signings. Gael Bigirimana and Leo Alves are just two examples of the latter, while 22-year-old full-back Adam Glenny was voted onto the team of the season this year having come through the youth will miss the firepower of John McGovern next season, who is expected to move on after a strong campaign in front of goal, but the Swifts will back themselves to find another bargain as a replacement. 2025-26 signings so far:2025-26 departures so far: Dean Curry (retired)
