How Long Dogs Live 2025: Researchers found this is how long 19 popular breeds of adorable dog live on average - including the loving Labrador 🐕

We're a nation of dog lovers, with around one-in-three households including at least one four-legged friend . By far the most popular pet in the UK, they make for wonderful companions, all the while improving both our mental and physical health - and that's a scientific fact. The army of dog owners continues to grow, with 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds . Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don't have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies. There's also always the option of adopting a dog from a dog shelter for a minimal fee - for example from the Dogs Trust . There's even academic guidance to seek out, with Psychologist Stanley Coren's book 'The Intelligence of Dogs' ranking breeds by instincts the ability to adapt. Meanwhile, how long a dog lives is partly dependent on its breed - with some far more likely to reach a grand old age than others. Research published in the journal Scientific Reports has used the Royal Veterinary College's Veterinary Companion Animal Surveillance System (VetCompass), a database holding information on over two million animals, to work out the average life expectance of some of the UK's most popular breeds of dog. Researchers took a random sample of 30,563 dogs that died over a five year period to come to their findings. Here's what they found to be the average lifespan of 19 of the most common dog breeds. 1 . Jack Russell Terrier The Jack Russell Terrier was the longest living breed that the study looked at - with an average age of 12.72 years. The cheery wee dogs were originally bred for fox hunting in North Devon. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Yorkshire Terrier Another terrier takes second spot. Small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs, so it's no surprise to see the tiny Yorkshire Terrier coming high up in this list with an average lifespan of 12.54 years. It orginated in the nineteenth century in - unsurprisingly - the English county of Yorkshire. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Border Collie The world's most intelligent dog breed, the Border Collie is also one of the most long lived - with an expected life of 12.10 years. Bred first on the border between England and Scotland, it's often very successfully used to herd sheep. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Springer Spaniel The wonderfully bouncy Springer Spaniel is expected to live around 11.92 years. Before becoming loved family pets, they were used to flush out (or 'spring' - hence the name) and retrieve game by hunters. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

But if you want a pup that will do two laps of the park before more of its canine friends have done one, there are a few dogs you should have at the top of your list. Meanwhile, if you'd rather have a pet who enjoys life at a slower pace, then there are also many perfect breeds for you. Here are the 20 fastest and slowest breeds of dog. 1 . Greyhound We're starting with the speediest of pooches. It probably comes as no surprise that the fastest breed of all is the Greyhound. They are born to run, although are surprisingly lazy the rest of the time, and have an incredible top speed of 45mph. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Saluki One of the most ancient breeds of dog, the Saluki is thought to date back to ancient Egypt. With a top speed of 42mph they are the second fastest dog breed. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Afghan Hound In joint bronze medal position for quickest canine is the Afghan Hound. At top speed they are a blur of fur, running at 40mph. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Vizla The other dog that can register up to 40mph on the canine speedometer is the Vizla. And one thing you might like to consider is that some breeds tend to stay healthier for longer, meaning your vet bills shouldn't be too painful and your pet has a better chance of a pain-free and lengthy life. Meanwhile others - including some of the most popular breeds - are prone to developing health problems. Here are the 26 most - and least - naturally healthy breeds of dog. 1 . Poodle We're starting with the breeds of dog who should need the least visits to the vet. No matter which size of Poodle you go for - Standard, Miniature or Toy - these immaculate dogs tend to stay in good health, with a lifespans of up to 18 years. Only older dogs tend to develop the joint and eye issues common to the breed. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Havanese Hailing from the capital city of the Carribean island of Cuba, like many small dogs the Havanese has more chance of developing liver and kidney disease than their larger cousins. Otherwise these loving characters can be expected to remain healthy for most of their lives. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Australian Cattle Dog A relatively rare breed in Britain an Australian Cattle Dog called Bluey made it into The Guiness Book of Records as the world's oldest dog. He reached the amazing age of 29. While longevity and health don't always go hand-in-hand, the breed are known to stay fairly fit until a ripe old age. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Belgian Malinois Bred as herding dogs, the Belgian Malinois is a close cousin of the more popualr German Shepherd. Like many working dog breeds they are naturally intelligent, very hardy and tend to stay healthy. The one condition they are predisposed to is cataracts. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

That study also ranked dog breeds by how obedient they are. So, if it's important to you that your dog is likely to follow commands there's guidance on the breeds that should top your list - and those that you should consider steering clear of. Here are the 20 most and least obedient breeds of dog - scientifically speaking. 1 . Border Collie We're starting with the dogs that will be delighted to obey every command. Top dog when it comes to obedience is the lively Border Collie. They do need lots of exercise though, so are not the perfect pet for everybody. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Poodle The second most obedient breed of dog is the Poodle. In order to be in the top tier of obedience a dog must listen to their owners' commands on the first try at least 95 per cent of the time. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . German Shepherd Claiming the bronze medal for obedience is the German Shepherd - which is also one of the most all-round intelligent breeds of dog. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 .
