Now, state-level test must for cross-stream PG admissions
Indore: In a significant policy shift, the department of higher education (DHE) Madhya Pradesh on Thursday allowed students to switch subject streams from undergraduate to postgraduate level through a state level eligibiity test to be conducted by the state uniersities soon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The move comes in order to accomodate students who wish to switch thier subject streams and have not appeared for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in the relevant subject. The decision marks the end of traditional eligibility norms. Until now, BA graduates could pursue an MA in any of the 26 disciplines, BCom graduates were also eligible for an MA or MCom and BSc students could opt for either an MSc or MA without any eligibilty tests. From the current academic session, such flexibility has been discontinued. Students from BA and BCom backgrounds will be considered for MSc or other science PG courses only if they clear CUET or state elibility test in the specific subject. Confirming the development, Tulsi Ram Dahayat, OSD, department of higher education, said, "Following requests from students, DHE has changed the admission norm in cross-stream for PG courses through CUET or a State Eligibility Test, as students should prove their ability to pursue the particular course." DHE is soon planning to conduct a meeting of state universities for further instructions on conducting the state eligibility test. Based on the test the students will get the admissions.

Can't demand equivalency certificates for UGC-approved courses, says Kerala HC
Kochi: High court has observed that requiring equivalency certificates from state universities for courses approved by UGC and offered by central universities would mark the end of the education system. Justice D K Singh was considering a petition by S Harisankar of Malappuram, challenging the decision of LBS Centre for Science and Technology — the agency responsible for conducting the State Eligibility Test (SET) for promotion to the post of higher secondary school teacher. Although the petitioner had passed the SET, the LBS Centre declined to issue his certificate of qualification, citing his failure to produce an equivalency certificate for his master's degree obtained from IGNOU . LBS Centre counsel and govt pleader argued that, in view of the special rules framed under the Kerala Education Act, 1958, an equivalency certificate is mandatory. They also referred to the SET prospectus, which contains a similar clause. However, the single bench observed that IGNOU is a central university of national importance established by the central govt to offer distance education and regular courses. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and its courses are UGC-approved. HC held that no insistence on equivalency certificates can be made in respect of degrees obtained from national institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Science (IISc), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) or other institutions recognized by the UGC. Accordingly, the court directed the LBS Centre to issue the SET qualification certificate for July 2021 to the petitioner.

Pune varsity files complaint over fake SET paper leak posts on social media
The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Wednesday approached the Pune Cyber Police Station with a complaint against fake and misleading content being circulated on social media regarding a purported paper leak in the upcoming State Eligibility Test (SET). The state eligibility test (SET) examination department of SPPU, which operates under the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines and conducts the exam on behalf of the Maharashtra government, is the nodal body responsible for determining eligibility for assistant professor posts in universities and senior colleges across Maharashtra and Goa. Swapnali Shinde, inspector, cyber police, said, 'If any concrete information emerges, a press release will be issued. At this stage, the case is under investigation.' The 40th SET exam is scheduled to be held on June 15 at various college centres in 18 cities across Maharashtra and Goa. In the lead-up to the exam, some unverified claims and videos alleging a paper leak have surfaced online, triggering anxiety among aspirants. The university has categorically denied these claims and termed them baseless. 'These videos and posts have no factual basis. Students are advised not to fall for such misinformation,' the SET department said in a statement, adding that only updates issued through the official SET portal should be trusted. Rahul Sasane, representative of the University Students Action Committee, said the panel has submitted a letter to the vice-chancellor demanding probe into the issue.
