Lindis Pass left without coverage for days as cell tower vandalised

Photo: An act of vandalism has left a stretch of remote alpine pass without cell phone coverage for days. Police have appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious or has dashcam footage from State Highway 8 Lindis Pass - Tarras Road between 7am and 1pm Sunday, when the tower was significantly damaged . Ian Hooker, chief executive of the Rural Connectivity Group, which owns the towers on behalf of the major network providers, said the vandalised tower serves as a linking site for another, meaning two of the Pass's five towers were out of service. He said the outage was a safety risk, especially at this time of year.

Seven people hurt in five-vehicles crash near Tekapo

Paramedics are treating one person in a moderate condition and six others with minor injuries. Photo: ST JOHN NZ Seven people have been injured in a five-vehicle crash on State Highway 8 between Lake Pukaki and Tekapo. Paramedics are treating one person in a moderate condition and six others with minor injuries as a result of the crash near Tekapo Powerhouse Road, shortly after 10am Wednesday. St John said a first response unit and two ambulances responded, but none of the injured required transport to hospital. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) put a temporary 50km/h speed limit on the road earlier this week because of fog and black ice. Police said the road is closed and motorists should avoid the area. Meanwhile, steep streets in Dunedin turned into icy slip and slides, sending walkers skittering down footpaths and clinging to poles to stop themselves skidding. Southern police received multiple reports of icy roads across the region, particularly near Heriot Row and London Street in Dunedin. Motorists were urged to take extra care and allow for extra travel time.
