Perak introduces special module to help PWDs gain employment
TAIPING: The Perak government, through several departments and agencies, has developed a special module to help Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) receive training for suitable employment, thereby enabling them to earn an income. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said those interested can register at his office, the Social Welfare Department (JKM), or the Perak Children's Aspiration Centre (Pasak). He said the module offers both short- and long-term courses, with each participant receiving an allowance of RM50 per day. 'Currently, there are about 5,000 unemployed persons with disabilities in Perak. I believe that through these modules, whether short-term (10 days to two weeks) or long-term (over three months), we can help them. 'This is more than just training; it is about creating opportunities for PWDs to start a new chapter in life through a career that boosts their confidence and improves their standard of living,' he said. He said this at a press conference, representing the Perak Menteri Besar, at the opening of the 2nd Malaysian Occupational Therapy Symposium organised by the Ministry of Health (MOH) here today. The event was also attended by MOH's head of Occupational Therapist Profession, Nora Hamid. Sivanesan added that the module is open to all PWDs, regardless of gender, race, or religion. In a separate matter, he said the state government does not reject the proposal to deploy a dedicated team or health personnel to monitor and improve emergency response along the East-West Highway (JRTB). Sivanesan said the proposal was appropriate and would be raised in discussions with the relevant authorities for further consideration. 'It's a proposal we believe is worth implementing. However, for now, the Transport Ministry is working to enhance safety along the JRTB route by installing additional street lights and warning signs. 'Road repair works are also underway by the Public Works Department. In the meantime, I urge all road users to exercise caution and follow all posted warning signs along the route,' he said.

Perak targets October ban on vape, e-cigarette sales
IPOH: The Perak government is targeting a ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes or vape products by October. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said a working paper on the matter is being drafted by the Perak State Health Department. "We have instructed the Perak health department, led by its director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha, to ensure that this working paper can be completed as soon as possible. "The working paper will also be brought to the State Executive Council (MMK) to decide on its enforcement, which I am targeting around October," he said. He said this when met after officiating the Orthopaedic Symposium Programme: Latest Developments and Best Practices in the Orthopaedic Field organised by the Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) at the Kinta River Front Hotel here, today. On June 4, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad explained that the state government is examining the need to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes in Perak. Saarani said the matter had been raised in the MMK, but several matters needed to be refined. Meanwhile, Sivanesan said that although he admitted that the action would cause uneasiness among vape operators, it would benefit the people overall, especially in terms of health. "We are ready (for complaints) about this matter, and for us, what is good for the people we will continue," he said. –BERNAMA

IPOH: The Perak government is currently conducting a comprehensive review on the need to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes (vapes) in the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the matter was recently raised in the State Executive Council (MMK) meeting, but there are issues that need to be examined in greater depth. According to him, the matter has also been entrusted to State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan for further scrutiny. 'I have spoken to him (Sivanesan) about the issue, as it requires an in-depth study from a health perspective, but there are also several other aspects that must be considered. 'In addition, we have also received a request from the vape traders' association for a meeting, so there are matters we need to review before making any decision,' he said at a press conference after launching the Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and Perak Smart Cities Blueprint 2040 here today. Also present were State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching and State Communication, Multimedia and NGOs Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi. Saarani said the study is expected to be presented at the upcoming MMK meeting and will cover all aspects, including health and the impact on vape traders and other stakeholders. Previously, Saarani had stated that any decision on banning vape sales was expected to be made at the MMK meeting on May 28.

Chithirai Pournami draws 20,000; vendor booth rental reduced
TELUK INTAN: The Perak government has offered a RM400 reduction in business site rental fees to vendors during the Chithirai Pournami festival held in Teluk Intan. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesa said that a total of 114 booths have been provided by the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) with a rental fee of RM2,500 for the 10 days of business activities during the celebration period, which runs from May 9 to 18. 'If last year, the MPTI charged a rental rate of RM2,900 throughout Chithirai Pournami festival and received complaints from traders who claimed the rate was too high, then this year the state government decided to provide a reduction of RM400 in rental rates. 'The Chithirai Pournami festival is a celebration that has been held for three days since yesterday on a grand scale in Teluk Intan because it is the most popular festival. The MPTI and other stakeholders made thorough and appropriate preparations so that Hindu devotees could celebrate it without any issues,' he said. Sivanesan said this when met by reporters while surveying the Chithirai Pournami celebration around the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Jalan Bandar here today. There was excitement in the air as about 20,000 Hindu devotees flooded the 150-year-old temple since 4 am today to fulfill their vows, starting with the 'paal koodam' ceremony or carrying pots containing milk, followed by prayer rituals, carrying kavadis and breaking of coconuts. Chithirai Pournami refers to the full moon that falls in the first month of the Tamil calendar known as Chithirai, and it is one of the important festivals for Hindus in Malaysia. According to Hindu religious beliefs, the yearly celebration is held to commemorate the birth of Chitragupta, the divine keeper of deeds, who was born during a full moon.
