Melaka to install 5 new telco towers for better tourist connectivity

MELAKA: The state government will install five new telecommunication towers in high-traffic tourist areas to improve connectivity and visitor experience. The initiative, announced by State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, is part of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) Universal Service Provision (USP) programme. The towers will be built in Kampung Kuala Linggi, Kampung Paya Lebar, Jonker Street, Taman Botanikal Ayer Keroh, and Pulau Besar. Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd has been appointed to handle the construction. Fairul Nizam revealed the plan during the Melaka State Legislative Assembly session at Seri Negeri, responding to a query from Kerk Chee Yee (PH–Ayer Keroh) regarding internet quality improvements in tourist-heavy zones. Since 2022, MCMC has audited 717 locations statewide, including 25 tourist spots, in preparation for Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM2024). The audits led to 48 Compliance Notices and 34 Commission Directives issued to service providers failing to meet required standards. 'Five directives were not complied with, resulting in civil penalties against the telcos involved,' Fairul Nizam said. Service providers were also mandated to submit short- and long-term solutions to address connectivity issues. This effort has reduced public complaints received by MCMC, dropping from 1,422 in 2022 to 1,243 in 2023, and further to 355 as of 2024. - Bernama

Melaka upgrades Hang Tuah Complex with RM5.8m for tourism boost

MELAKA: The state government has allocated RM5.8 million for the upgrading of the Hang Tuah Centre Complex and Hang Tuah Museum in Duyong. The three-year project, which began in 2023, includes RM2.5 million dedicated to enhancing exhibition materials using artificial intelligence (AI). Duyong Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem, who also serves as the deputy chairman of the State Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Communications Committee, stated that the upgrades aim to attract more tourists. 'The Hang Tuah Centre Complex has become a key tourist destination,' he said after appearing on Melaka FM. The state is collaborating with the Melaka International College of Science and Technology (MiCoST) to develop a Roblox video game based on the Hang Tuah Village concept. This initiative targets younger generations as part of promotional efforts. Additional reforms include new programmes such as weekly silat training and demonstrations by local associations. A 'cakar ayam' crafting demo and 'sukan rakyat' events will also be held every Sunday. Mohd Noor Helmy added that 166 activities are planned for the 'Duyong Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' programme, running from July 13 for two weeks. Free marriage courses and early screenings for special needs children are among the highlights. - Bernama

Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months

MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police. During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court. 'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today. He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial. The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services. 'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added. Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders. The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.

Transforming education must: Hajiji

Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji posing for a group photo with other guests and participants of Arise 2025. Kota Kinabalu: Transforming the State's education system is an urgent necessity and not a choice to ensure Sabah students are prepared to face future challenges, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said 2024 study data revealed that only 65 per cent of students demonstrated good or excellent problem-solving skills, while just 72pc felt confident applying scientific knowledge in their daily lives. 'This shows we cannot be complacent. Many students are still struggling to grasp basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) concepts. Therefore, education transformation must be made a top priority,' he said when officiating an international education research conference, Arise (Astounding Research Innovation STEM Exploration) at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Wednesday. Hajiji said a research and innovation-based teaching approach must be strengthened and mainstreamed to ensure Sabah's education system remains relevant, inclusive and competitive. Hajiji also called on all educators, educational institutions, researchers and policymakers to continue exploring and improving educational approaches in line with the digital era and current industry needs. He said Arise 2025, which brings together more than 600 participants including the United Kingdom, Spain, Philippines, China and Ireland serves as a vital platform for global-level educational collaboration. Advertisement 'This conference not only unites educators, researchers and policymakers from various countries but also promotes the empowerment of education rooted in science, technology and culture.' He also emphasised the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and STEM education as key drivers in developing a high-quality, competitive and innovative human capital in Sabah. He said the State Government has allocated RM41.75 million this year to the State Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (KSTI), the Sabah Skills and Training Centre (SSTC) and the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (Scenic) for various training and skills empowerment programmes. They include Kembara Sains Borneo, the Sabah Science Carnival, the Technology and Innovation Competition, the STEM Education Festival, the Roboneo Programme and the Sabah Screen Fest — all of which serve as important platforms to spark students' interest in technology and engineering. Hajiji also welcomed the presentation of 13 conference sub-themes, including digital education, Malay studies, Islamic education, guidance and counselling, sports science, visual arts and early childhood education. He is confident sharing of knowledge would lead to international collaborations that can elevate the profile of researchers and educational institutions in Sabah to the global stage. 'Educators are the lifeblood and backbone of successful education transformation. I urge them to be bold in exploring research and innovation in education,' he said. Arise 2025 is also a manifestation of the State Government's commitment through the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan 2021–2025, which prioritises education as a catalyst for the State's sustainable development. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
