'I tried The Bear's viral dishes and had to see what all the fuss was about'

FX and Disney+'s The Bear is back for a fourth season and foodies will be treated to more delightful looking dishes as well as hard-hitting stories in the psychological comedy-drama Food fans get ready as the psychological comedy-drama The Bear series four hits our screens today. After breaking global streaming records, the hit Disney+ offering will get straight into it with the fallout from the Chicago Tribune's review of eatery. And while the show starring Jeremy Allen White is certainly about more than just culinary delights, the chance for this always-hungry reporter to try some of the viral sensations from the hit series was something my belly couldn't say no to. ‌ In the FX and Disney+ show, viewers watch White portray the role of a young chef called Carmy come from the fine dining world and return home to Chicago following a death to run his family sandwich shop. And it was one of those dishes that allowed me to tickle my taste buds. ‌ Carmy may be a world away from what he is used to by running his business in the drama, but let's just say cooking isn't my forte either. And while an award-winning chef I am most certainly not, I was left craving a trip to Chicago to try the real deal after the three dishes I whipped up. For this extremely basic cook, a Chicago-Style Steak Sandwich and Fries was the clear winner. As part of Gousto's The Bare limited edition package, which helps recreate the show's most viral dishes, I knew I was onto a winner when I first saw it. "Can't handle the heat? Go easy!" was the warning on the handy step-by-step guide. Challenge accepted! In it all went to hopefully pack a punch. While there was definitely a kick, it was just right - without sounding like one of the three bears. TikTok feeds have been overflowing with takes on this iconic Chicago Beef Sandwich and it's clear to see why. Recreating the Italian beef sandwich by moodily frying tender steak with green peppers and smothering in a savoury jus reduction left little to be desired. ‌ Loading it handsomely into a soft baguette and serve with home-cooked fries and dip. Let's just say it's a big fat yes from me. The other dishes up for grabs were THAT Crispy Omelette that got viewers drooling. It might have divided viewers in episode nine, but it got an impressive thumbs up from yours truly. ‌ Stuffed full of garlic and herb soft cheese and topped with crisps for crunch, it's safe to see why viewers became obsessed. To finish on a hat-trick of culinary delights (not all in one sitting!) was a family spaghetti with cheesy garlic bread. While I might not have had the presentation of a well-run Chicago restaurant, I was able to capture the spirit and soul of Chicago cooking right here in my North East home. And let's face it, it all went down the gullet in prompt fashion anyway! It's safe to that while a career change is definitely not on the horizon, these dishes were a huge success and left me wondering what delicacies might come from season four. Exclusively available until 15th July, 'The Bare' range includes three limited-edition recipes and also helps Trussell support families who'd otherwise go without the bare essentials this summer.

WA motel's steak sandwich makes the final cut in competition

A 'traditional' steak sandwich served up at a Kalgoorlie-Boulder motel has made the final of a Statewide competition. The organisers of the Australian Hotels Association (WA) and Little Creatures WA's Best Steak Sandwich contest named The Miners Rest as one of the four country WA finalists in this year's event. The three others were Margaret River's Settlers Tavern, Pinjarra's Exchange Hotel, and Australind's Treendale Farm Hotel — with Treendale winning last year. The Miners Rest head chef Don Duenas this month told the Kalgoorlie Miner about his creation for the competition — Steak Me Home. The mouthwatering special features a garlic-buttered square roll, marinated cube roll steak, rocket, tomato, and red onions with a barbecued mushroom and bacon bourbon jam. The sandwich is served with chips and smoky capsicum-jalapeno mayonnaise. Duenas said last year's entry incorporated a mix of Japanese and Asian influences, but this year's approach was more traditional. 'We wanted it to be more balanced and (bring out) the soft side of the sandwich, on the spicy side, the sweet side, the sour side,' he said. 'The steak is marinated for, like, 24 hours, sometimes two days, so the flavour seeps in.' Four Perth metropolitan finalists were also named — Carrington's Bar & Grill in Hamilton Hill, Print Hall in Perth, The Central in Butler, and The Last Local in Canning Vale. Carrington's Bar & Grill is the defending metro champion. The finalists will compete for the titles of country WA champion on June 24 and Perth metro champion on June 25 at the 2025 AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth. They will present their steak sandwiches to a panel of judges who will assess tenderness, presentation, originality, flavour, chips, sauces and value. AHA(WA) chief executive Bradley Woods said the standard of entries continued to impress, with more than 70 venues entering and showcasing exceptional levels of flavour, creativity and presentation. 'WA's Best Steak Sandwich is more than just a competition — it's a sizzling showcase of foodie passion and the incredible talent we have in our pubs and hotels across the State,' he said. 'The energy this year has been fantastic. Venues have thrown themselves into it, especially on social media — rallying their communities and bringing some serious steak sandwich spirit to the competition. 'We're looking forward to seeing what the finalists bring to the stage during the live cook-off to determine the winners.'

Premier Hotel Albany, Hybla Tavern and Bremer Bay Resort up to win title of WA's best steak sandwich

Three Great Southern pubs are up for the coveted title of best steak sanga in the State in the upcoming Australian Hotels Association awards. Albany's Premier Hotel and Hybla Tavern are joined by the Bremer Bay resort to compete in the 2025 AHA & Little Creatures WA's Best Steak Sandwich competition. The public can choose their preferred sandwich out of 19 regional and 50 metropolitan nominated restaurants. Premier Hotel events and administration manager Yvette Boyd believes her pub's beloved favourite is in with a chance due to its fresh ingredients and traditional style. 'The chef makes their own onion jam on site and it just finishes the sandwich off as a simple classic that works really well,' she said. 'It's a traditional pub-style steak sandwich with really fresh ingredients. 'We even have Tuesday dedicated to our steak sandwiches, with our $25 steak sandwich and pint special.' Bremer Bay Resort's events and marketing manager Veronica Thomas, however, thinks the title belongs a bit further east along the south coast. 'We think our steak sandwich is the greatest because it's packed with 200g of perfectly seasoned, medium-rare steak, layered with melted cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato, sweet and tangy peperonata, and a bold chimichurri sauce — all served in a warm Turkish panini with a side of golden, crispy chips,' she said. '(It's) crafted with care by our talented head chef Noi Boonkerd and her exceptional team.' Hybla Tavern on Middleton Beach is also in the running with its Melaleuka Farm Steak Sandwich, which head chef Arnaldo Ramos said includes a nod to his Filipino heritage while incorporating modern Australian flavours. 'Incorporating our very own premium Melaleuka Farm beef, farmed by us at our family farm in North Dandalup, our steak sandwich consists of only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients and offers our guests an intriguing twist on a traditional steak sandwich, a dish that they would not expect and an unforgettable flavour that will keep them coming back,' he said The public can sample the sandwiches and vote for their favourite online until May 26. The people's vote, combined with the results of mystery judge visits throughout May, will decide the top four metro and regional finalists who will demonstrate their prowess in a live cook-off at the 2025 AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth on June 24 and 25. AHA WA chief executive Bradley Woods said the steak sandwich competition — now in its 18th year — 'captures the heart of Western Australia's vibrant hospitality scene'. It's an opportunity for venues to showcase their culinary flair, engage with their communities, and be recognised for producing one of WA's most iconic and loved dishes. 'This year's competition promises to be a thrilling one, and we encourage everyone to get behind their favourite venue and help them secure a place in the live cook-offs.'
