Clyde confident for season ahead, says Craig Howie as side set for Dumbarton opener

The Bully Wee are ready to kick-off their League Two campaign this weekend Clyde star Craig Howie says there's a real sense of confidence about the club as they head into their League Two opener at Dumbarton on Saturday. ‌ The New Douglas Park club's Premier Sports Cup ended in a 3-0 defeat at Morton on Saturday, having drawn 2-2 at home to Stenhousemuir on Tuesday, winning the shoot-out 4-3 for the extra point. ‌ That left the Bully Wee third in Group G, behind winners Motherwell and runners-up Morton, with six points from their four games. ‌ But Howie, from Rutherglen, reckons it will have them well prepared for the challenge ahead. He said: 'It's always good to get some wins and good performances in the bag. Everyone knows it's a completely different ball game when the league starts, but it's always good to get a bit of momentum, and there seems to be a bit of confidence about the place at the moment. 'I'd like to think we can take that into the league campaign. 'I think every single game in League Two is going to be really tough and competitive, there's not going to be any stand-outs at the bottom or the top, so it's all to play for. 'But this is one we're really looking forward to – we've got a couple of boys that we've signed who were playing with Dumbarton last season and vice-versa, so it should be a good game. It's really important to get off to a good start.' ‌ Howie bagged his first goal of the season in the last-gasp 2-1 win over Peterhead at the Balmoor Stadium, equalling last season's tally, and he wants more. He said: 'As a defender, you're more focused on trying to keep clean sheets, but it's good to get one so early on, and it probably takes away a wee bit of pressure. 'It's one I can look to build on, and I need to challenge myself to get more goals, because it's something I don't do enough of, particularly with the amount of corners and stuff Clyde get. 'I'm definitely challenging myself. I'm not putting a number on it, but I'm definitely looking to get a few more over the season.'

Stenhousemuir 0, Motherwell 1: O'Donnell strike keeps Well cup hopes alive

Motherwell kept alive their hopes of progressing from Premier Sports Cup Group D with a slender win over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. The Premiership side had a number of chances to stretch their lead, particularly in the second half after a first 45 played in torrential rain. In the end, Stephen O'Donnell's strike just before the interval was enough to separate the sides and put Motherwell on eight points, going into a last-game showdown at home to Morton on Tuesday. Stenhousemuir boss Gary Naysmith made four changes to the side that lost to Morton on Tuesday, having made seven signings on Friday. Josh Walker, Finn Robson, Peter Mendy and Ross Taylor came in for Oli Simpson, Scott McGill, Matty Aitken and Corey O'Donnell. Motherwell gaffer Jan Berthel Askou made six changes to the side that struggled past Peterhead on Tuesday. Stephen O'Donnell, Kofi Balmer, Ewan Wilson, Andy Halliday, Tawanda Maswanhise and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came in for John Koutroumbis, Paul McGinn, Liam Gordon, Emmanuel Longelo, Elliot Watt and Eseosa Sule. Motherwell went close in seven minutes when Callum Slattery's cross from the right was well met by the head of Tawanda Maswanhise, but brilliantly clawed over the bar by Darren Jamieson. A whipped Ewan Wilson cross from the left caused havoc in the Stenny box in 13 minutes, but there were no takers. Andy Halliday tried a shot from distance in 31 minutes, but it was well over. Callum Slattery saw a 19-yard free kick punched over the bar by Jamieson in 39 minutes, but referee Lloyd Wilson awarded a goal kick, much to the bemusement of the crowd. But Motherwell took the lead two minutes later when Slattery's corner from the right was met at the back post by a side-foot finish from O'Donnell. Motherwell went close to doubling that lead in 54 minutes when Elijah Just's cross from the left took a wicked deflection off defender Greg Buchanan, but keeper Jamieson reacted well to block. The visitors should have doubled their lead in 64 minutes when Slattery's cross from the right was met with a back-post volley by sub Eseosa Sule, but Jamieson brilliant blocked. Halliday's corner from the right was met with a powerful header by Kofi Balmer that was cleared off the line by Michael Anderson in 71 minutes. Anderson should have levelled in 90 minutes when a shot came to him through a ruck of legs, but he fired past with just Connelly to beat. Motherwell boss: 'Our cup fate was always in our own hands, despite sticky start'

Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou insists their Premier Sports Cup fate was always in their own hands as they head into a final game showdown against Morton on Tuesday. The Steelmen nearly came a cropper in their opener at Clyde, drawing 2-2 before winning on penalties, but squeezed past Stenhousemuir at Ochilview this afternoon, having bagged a similarly narrow win over Peterhead in midweek. Stephen O'Donnell's 41st-minute strike was enough to separate the sides in Larbert, leaving Motherwell on eight points as they prepare to host Dougie Imrie's Championship side. Askou said: 'I think our destiny has been in our own hands the whole time, I haven't really felt it slip out of our hands, even though it was a rough start. 'But we have that firm grip around it and not let go, because nothing is done yet, and now we can look forward to a good game on Tuesday.' Askou felt there was an improvement in his side, creating more chances, with Tawanda Maswanhise's header well saved by Darren Jamieson, and Callum Slattery had a terrific free kick brilliantly punched over by the Stenny keeper – even if referee Lloyd Wilson disagreed, awarding a goal-kick. But Motherwell took the lead in 41 minutes when Slattery's corner from the right was side-footed in by O'Donnell at the back post. The visitors should have doubled their lead in 64 minutes when Slattery's cross was met with a back-post volley by sub Eseosa Sule, but Jamieson instinctively blocked. And the Steelmen were nearly made to pay for that when defender Gregor Buchanan missed a shot from six yards that would have levelled the game in the 90th minute. Askou said: 'You need to be clinical when the chance is there, and I think we should have been even more productive and created more chances, a higher volume, and good situations. 'There were a few situations where we should have been more clinical, for sure. Their keeper had a few good saves, I'll give him that. 'Our performance in the first half was a good tempo, at times, good desperation to score and chase, and we were dangerous in set-pieces, but we dropped too much in the second half, when we felt maybe too comfortable. 'It's something to improve, and it's not easy – I don't expect us to just go out and bang five or six goals against teams who do well, sit well and defend with their heart and everything they've got. 'But I expect us to be more productive, in terms of volume of chances and the size of chances we produced. 'When we don't, it's extremely important that we don't give away anything, like we've done in the first couple of games, and that was spot-on today, except for their last chance, which is unacceptable.'
