‘Italians don't joke' – Moment Leonardo Bonucci wipes out Steph Houghton with crunching tackle at Soccer Aid
FOOTIE fans were left stunned by Leonardo Bonucci's brutal tackle on Steph Houghton. The Euro 2020 winner lined up for the World XI in Sunday evening's Soccer Aid match against England at Old Trafford. 5 5 5 The recently retired Italian never missed an opportunity to stick a crunching challenge on his opponents during his trophy-laden career. And his all-or-nothing mantra resulted in him leaving former Lionesses star Houghton in a heap during the charity clash at the Theatre of Dreams. The 38-year-old wiped out Houghton as she looked to get on the end of a ball played down the wing. Bonucci got the ball, but his follow-through sent Houghton crashing into the turf. The tackle, understandably, went viral and footie fans took to social media to express their shock. One wrote on X: "He took her out." And another said: "He took the ball off her professionally, that's not a foul from Bonucci." One remarked: "That's holding back for Bonucci." Another chimed: "Italians love defending. Good tackle." Tony Bellew forced off FIVE MINUTES into Soccer Aid and helped down Old Trafford tunnel Women's Euro 2022 winner Houghton recovered from the crunching challenge and continued playing. And there was clearly no ill will towards Bonucci as she embraced her fellow retired defender after the match. Bonucci shared a photo of himself with his arm around Houghton after the match on his Instagram story with the accompanying caption: "She's still alive!!!" Houghton saw the funny side of the post and reshared it to her own story, writing: "My guy." The World XI bested England 5-4 thanks to FOUR GOALS from Carlos Tevez and a shock winner from Big Zuu.

Leonardo Bonucci goes viral after leaving ex-England Women's captain Steph Houghton in a heap with brutal sliding tackle at Soccer Aid
Italian legend Leonardo Bonucci did not hold back in Sunday's Soccer Aid charity match as he left former England Women's captain Steph Houghton writhing in agony after putting in a brutal sliding tackle. The annual charity match at Old Trafford had been played in good spirits, but Bonucci's competitive edge took over in the closing stages as the World XI closed in on a 5-4 victory. With the ball played down England's right flank, Bonucci and Houghton both went in for a 50/50 challenge. While Houghton appeared a little hesitant, Bonucci fully committed and won the ball, but his momentum saw him crash into Houghton who collapsed to the turf. Bonucci came away with the ball, but quickly spotted that Houghton was in distress and stopped play so that she could receive treatment. Houghton was attended to for a couple of minutes before she finally got back to her feet and was able to continue for the final minutes of the game. The tackle immediately went viral, with fans on social media largely praising Bonucci for his no-nonsense approach. Bonucci Not about the Woke life 🤣🤣🤣 #SoccerAid — Amit (@amit_mavar) June 15, 2025 Bonucci was hailed by one fan for putting in a 'proper challenge' despite it being a charity match Another X user branded the incident 'fantastic', praising Bonucci's no-nonsense attitude One supporter suggested the moment cemented Bonucci as a 'legend' of the game However, Paddy Power questioned whether Bonucci had forgotten the match was for charity 'Proper challenge. Houghton can take it and wouldn't want it any other way,' one X user wrote. Another fan hailed him as a 'legend', while one supporter simply branded the incident 'fantastic'. However, some were left stunned that Bonucci hadn't pulled out of the tackle given that it was only a charity match to raise money for UNICEF. Paddy Power asked on its social media account: 'Does Leonardo Bonucci know it's a charity game?' Bonucci only retired from professional football last year after finishing his career at Fenerbahce. He is best known for his time at Juventus, where he won nine Serie A titles, while he was also part of Italy's Euros-winning team in 2021. Houghton also called time on her own playing career in 2024 after winning 121 caps for England. She captained the Lionesses to a third-place finish at the 2015 World Cup.

'If you want stability, go to Liverpool'
The Monday Night Club panel have been discussing whether Liverpool will be the most attractive Premier League destination this summer, after Arne Slot came in and scooped up a Premier League title in his first season at England captain Steph Houghton says the club will need to think about their current "culture" before splashing the cash."As a footballer you want security and stability - and at this moment in time, out of the top five or top six clubs, Liverpool provide that," she said."But next year will be a tough season for Liverpool because once you're at the top, it is so much harder to stay there than trying to climb your way up there."At Chelsea, it has been a bit of a car crash at times, when they have been making decisions and buying all of these players, but buying loads of players doesn't necessarily bring success. "It is obvious that Arne Slot is going to go and buy players, but then it is about how he moulds that culture again."Watch the full episode on BBC iPlayer or listen on BBC Sounds
