‘The Penguin' star Colin Farrell would be the latest Batman villain to win a major award
When it comes to Hollywood awards, it pays to be in the Caped Crusader's rogues gallery. In 2008, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix did his own interpretation of the character in Joker, which also won him an Oscar. If Colin Farrell wins an Emmy this year for his performance as the title character in The Penguin, he'd be the third actor to have won a major peer group award for playing a Bat-villain. More from Gold Derby Paul Giamatti, Stephen Graham, Cooper Koch, and the best of our Emmy Limited Series/Movie Actor interviews 'The Bear' Season 4: 'A big improvement' or 'aimless and boring'? Critics dish on the latest course Following the events of the 2022 feature film, The Batman, The Penguin miniseries explores Oz Cobb/the Penguin's rise to power in the criminal underworld of Gotham City. Earlier this year, Farrell managed to win the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portrayal. He's now eligible for an Emmy Award for the HBO show, and it would be the first of his career. Squaring off against the Dark Knight has a long history of turning into awards nominations. In 1966, Frank Gorshin was Emmy-nominated for Best Comedy Supporting Actor for playing the Riddler in the original Batman television series opposite Adam West. In 1989, Jack Nicholson received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor for playing the Joker in Tim Burton's first Batman film. In 2005 and 2008, Kevin Michael Richardson received two Daytime Emmy noms for voicing the Joker in the animated series The Batman. Netflix drops 'bleak and gripping' period drama starring Line Of Duty legend packed full of sex, spies and subterfuge
Netflix has dropped a 'bleak and gripping' period drama starring a Line Of Duty legend packed full of sex, spies and subterfuge. The Secret Agent first hit screens on the BBC nearly ten years ago in 2016 and delves into 1886 London. The four-part series is based on Joseph Conrad's novel which shares the same title as the drama. It follows Verloc (Toby Jones), a sex shopkeeper and Russian spy, who has to deal with 'pressure to commit an act of politically-motivated terrorism,' according to the synopsis. Other cast members include Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure who plays Verloc's wife, Winnie, as well as Stephen Graham as Chief Inspector Heat. The Secret Agent was recently added to Netflix for fans to stream and has received a range of reviews since it first aired. While The Telegraph only rated it two out of five stars and described it as 'one of the bleakest, murkiest and most disturbing dramas' of the year, the Radio Times dubbed the series a 'gripping period tale'. However, The Mail's Christopher Stevens scored it a disappointing two out of five stars too and felt the show lacked 'the oomph' of a 'classic thriller' but overall said it was a 'stolid literary adaptation'. The Secret Agent has a modest 6.1/10 score on IMDb and one fan gushed: 'Dark, bleak, brooding but really good!' While another called the series 'excellent' and rated it eight out of ten. 'I cannot understand the negative reviews about this film, it was excellent, the only actor l had heard of was Toby Jones who played Capt. Mainwaring in the remake of Dad's Army, and l think that's what made it so much better then a film with big start names it felt more authentic, it was sad, dramatic, drama, but bedside anything else it was excellent l give it 9/10,' one viewer chimed in. However, someone else was disappointed and said: 'It's a strange and unconvincing story, but it has its points of interest, as it deals with the murky late Victorian world of mysterious anarchists. 'Unfortunately, this BBC version is not very well done. The main problem is that it is too slow and does not flow.' It comes as a 'fascinating and suspenseful' Netflix thriller left fans gripped with a 'psychopathic' leading man and a 'dark' twist. The Occupant first hit screens back in 2020 and is available to watch on the streaming platform. It follows unemployed advertising executive Javier Muñoz (Javier Gutiérrez) who becomes obsessed with the new tenants of the home he had to give up. However, things take a horrifying twist when 'his motives toward the family turn sinister,' according to the synopsis. Despite only having a modest 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Occupant has still managed to collect plenty of praise from fans. The Secret Agent is available to stream on Netflix now.

Netflix fans can rediscover Stephen Graham's 'forgotten' period drama
The Adolescence star plays Inspector Heat Netflix has subtly added all episodes of Stephen Graham's 'forgotten' period drama based on a highly praised novel. The four-part series, The Secret Agent, is now accessible to subscribers of the streaming service. Originally aired on the BBC in 2016, the mini-series is now available for a wider audience. The show masterfully combines elements of period drama and spy thriller, although even ardent fans of these genres may have overlooked it. Set in London in 1886, it follows a shopkeeper who moonlights as a spy for the Russian Embassy, finding himself under pressure to execute a politically-motivated act of terrorism, all while grappling with the risk of his true identity being revealed. The Secret Agent is an adaptation of the renowned satirical novel by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1907. Despite not achieving commercial success upon its release, it has since been recognised as one of Conrad's finest works. Some critics have even hailed it as ahead of its time due to its exploration of global terrorism themes, reports Surrey Live. Toby Jones heads the cast as Anton Verloc, the eponymous secret agent, alongside some of the most familiar faces in British television. Vicky McClure, known for her role in Line of Duty, portrays his wife Winnie, while Charlie Hamblett plays her brother Stevie, later appearing in Missing You, a Harlan Coben adaptation for Netflix. Stephen Graham from Adolescence also features, taking on the role of Chief Inspector Heat. When the series first aired, it received a mixed reception from critics. The Radio Times praised it as "a gripping period tale exploring urgent modern anxieties." while The Telegraph was less favourable, describing it as "one of the bleakest, murkiest and most disturbing dramas this year". The original book's complexity led esteemed film critic Roger Ebert to once deem it unfilmable, which might explain why the adaptation didn't resonate with everyone. Some reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with minor deviations from the source material. Nevertheless, there are fans who have come out in support of the series amidst the critiques. A fan defended the show online, stating: "I'm puzzled by the reviews that claim all of Conrad's brilliant story have been abandoned. Utterly untrue. All the main points of the original story are here. The betrayals, the ethical compromises, the cowardice. Not a single one missing. What had changed is how the story is told. Conrad jumped back and forth, a device that works better on writing than on TV." They elaborated further: "The result is a thoughtful carefully constructed story that resists the urge to pick up the tempo just for the sake of a little excitement. Some lovely performances by the whole cast. No one is cast as either superhero or supervillain. These are ordinary people of no great distinction, no matter their place in life. Both evil and justice are flawed and banal." Another chimed in: "This is a totally enthralling production. It is very contemporary in its topic. Considering when the story was originally written, it has a very modern appeal. The story has twists and turns. The ending is very intriguing. The acting is excellent. Toby Jones and all the cast give marvellous performances. I would highly recommend this." The Secret Agent is streaming on Netflix.
