Most Americans are guilty of this seriously gross behavior during a day out at the beach
They're a bunch of pissers. With July 4th falling on a Friday this year, the American Automobile Association expects 72.2 million Americans to be hitting the roads and airports. Many of those travelers will most likely plant their patriotic selves on a beach somewhere to celebrate America's birthday. Now the question is, will these beachgoers behave? Be careful next time you're going for a dip. Stock fresh – According to a new study by 92% of Americans have engaged in rude beach behavior — like setting up camp on top of other people or playing music too loudly — but that's not even the worst of it. Most of the study's participants are guilty of peeing in the ocean on any given beach day. Yes, 70% of US beachgoers confessed to going waist deep into the ocean to relieve themselves instead of finding a nearby bathroom. 18% of people find this tinkle habit annoying — but what they don't know won't hurt them. Many beachgoers have no problem admitting they go for a pee dip. agratitudesign – Other beach confessions included drinking alcohol on beaches where it's prohibited (49%) and stealing sand or shells (38%) — which is a tad more innocent than the potty one. Almost 30% of the people surveyed are aware that their obnoxiously loud music playing on the beach annoys others — but that doesn't stop them. According to the study, 2 in 10 Americans smoke on the beach — despite others probably holding their breath while the beachy breeze blows the stinky smell in their faces. Loud tunes and smoke aside, 82% of participants said the most annoying thing fellow beachgoers can do is litter — but only 1 in 4 actually admit to doing it. In terms of who is guilty of this naughty beach behavior, it's no surprise that older folks are a more considerate group compared to Gen Zers (30%), who are the most rowdy ones. Millennials (26%) and Gen X (23%) aren't in the clear as they fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to engaging in impolite beach behavior. To conduct this research, asked over 1,000 American men and women participants — aged 18-77, who visit the beach at least once a year — which behaviors they find irritating and which they partake in. If you want to relax — or pee — on a beach this weekend but prefer to stay local, Cooper's Beach on the Southhampton shore has been ranked the best beach in the country by Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach.' He earned this nickname by conducting annual rankings of beaches since 1991.

Vacation at your own risk: These are the most dangerous beaches in the US — here's what horrors await
While many vacationers are ready to throw on their bathing suits, slather on the SPF and head to the beach for some fun in the sun this summer — researchers at Tideschart, a leading tide forecasting platform, are warning travelers to steer clear of these 10 dangerous beaches. What makes a beach risky to hang out at? Shark attacks, surf-related deaths and hurrianes, of course. The Tideschart team carefully analyzed over 500 shorelines in the US and determined that Florida has the most frightening beaches. The 10 beaches that made the cut were given a score out of 100. New Smyrna Beach snagged the No. 1 spot on this list with a score of 76.92. The Tideschart team said this beach, which lies on the northwestern side of Florida, is most likely to get hit by brutal hurricanes because of its location. 3 New Smyrna Beach is known for its beautiful, wide sandy beaches. JavierArtPhotography – And to make matters worse, this coast has earned itself the title of the 'Shark Bite Capital of the World' since it has the highest likelihood of shark attacks. New Smyrna Beach also experienced 12 surf fatalities between 2010 and 2024. Coming in at No. 2 on this terrifying list is Laguna Beach with a 67.75 rating. This Panama City beach had the most surf-related deaths — 39 to be exact — of all the analyzed beaches, in addition to nine shark attacks. Popular tourist destination, Daytona Beach — which is on the eastern side of Florida — came in third on the list with a score of 64.47. Thanks to the beach's powerful currents, there have been 27 reported surfing deaths and almost 70 shark attacks. 3 Daytona came in at No. 3 on the list of the most dangerous beaches. jovannig – Beware, Miami Beach lovers: this coastal city ranked No. 4 with a 46.49 score, 13 surf-related deaths and almost 20 shark attacks. The Indialantic Ocean Beach Park might be considered the smallest beach boardwalk in the world — but it sure is mighty. This hazardous beach earned itself a score of 44.64 for its nine surf fatalities and 30 shark attacks. 3 Florida is home to all 10 beaches on this list. miami2you – Here are the top 10 most dangerous beaches in the US New Smyrna Beach, Florida, 76.92 Laguna Beach, Florida, 67.75 Daytona Beach, Florida, 64.47 Miami Beach, 46.49 Indialantic Boardwalk, Florida, 44.64 Cocoa Beach, Florida, 44.01 Palm Beach, Florida, 43.53 Miramar Heights Beach, Florida, 41.88 Cape Canaveral, Florida, 40.75 Jupiter Beach Park, Florida, 40.37 Although Florida might have the most dangerous beaches, thankfully, New York is home to one of the best beaches in America. Cooper's Beach — located on the Southampton shores on the eastern end — was given this title by Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach.' This beach was praised for its 'white quartz sand' and 'large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.' 'It's a big, beautiful beach,' Leatherman told CNN.

This ‘big, beautiful' beach near NYC was just named the best in the US
Beach, please. As if the Hamptons needed any more hype. With Memorial Day Weekend right around the corner, a couple of Long Island hot spots were ranked No. 1 and No. 5 on the list of the top 10 beaches in the U.S. for 2025 — just as a neighboring beach was identified as a diarrhea-prone 'bacteria hot spot.' Cooper's Beach — located on the Southampton shores on the eastern end — has been ranked the best beach in America, according to Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach,' a nickname earned because of annual rankings he started in 1991. Joe Trentacosti – The New York beach was noted for its 'white quartz sand' and 'large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.' 'It's a big, beautiful beach,' Leatherman simply told CNN. Advertisement The beach boss — who uses a 50-factor checklist primarily made with swimming in mind, but accounts for scenery, sports and more — claimed the only issue with the swanky spot is traffic and expensive parking. To avoid being stuck in the driver's seat or an unwanted parking bill, Leatherman suggested riding the free shuttle from downtown Southampton. The beach landed at the second spot last year, coming in behind Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu, which didn't even make the 2025 list. Advertisement The second and third spots were taken by Hawaii's Wailea Beach on the island of Maui and Poipu Beach on the island of Kauai, respectively. Florida joined the list with Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples at No. 4 and St. Andrews State Park in Panama City at No. 7. Then the Hamptons reappeared at No. 5 with Main Beach in East Hampton. 4 Wailea Beach on the island of Maui was listed as the second-best beach in the U.S. Gado via Getty Images Advertisement 4 Third on the list was the beautiful Poipu Beach on the island of Kauai. Ron – 'Main Beach provides the perfect blend of nature and built environment,' Leatherman wrote. 'The big, wide sandy beach composed of grainy quartz grains has towering sand dunes and beautiful clean and clear blue water.' The expert also noted the high chance of star-spotting — and he doesn't mean looking up at the night sky. Again, his only problem is the parking; at this spot, he recommends biking. 4 The Hamptons also nabbed No. 5 with Main Beach in East Hampton, which was noted for its 'perfect blend of nature and built environment.' AP Leatherman listed Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island in South Carolina at No. 6 and St. Andrews State Park in Panama City, Florida at No. 7. Hawaii was honored again with Kaunaoa on the Big Island and Lanikai Beach on Oahu. being No. 8 and No. 9. The list was rounded out with a classic New England escape — Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, at No. 10. Advertisement He noted that while his choices might be a surprise, many of America's beaches are too polluted, murky, hot or cold to top his list.
