Gilmore Could Be Tug-Of-War Signing For Cowboys vs. Eagles

Gilmore Could Be Tug-Of-War Signing For Cowboys vs. Eagles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The entirety of the Philadelphia Eagles put on a display of dominance last season that culminated in a triumph in Super Bowl LIX. Looking around the depth chart, any weakness was hard to identify if even applicable. Advertisement The Dallas Cowboys, their NFC East rivals, cannot at this time quite make that boast. Philadelphia's defensive front led by monstrous defensive tackle Jalen Carter earned plenty of shine and linebacker Zack Baun became one of the best stories around the NFL. In some ways, the excellence of the Eagles' secondary took a back seat. But that did not stop a breakout campaign from their young stars. Both Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean shined in their rookie seasons. Eli Ricks and Kelee Ringo represent the other budding pieces in the secondary all ready to repeat their success again in 2025. But could this group explore the addition of some veteran talent? Advertisement Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore remains a free agent. Gilmore has no leaning as to his next destination. Though he's made it clear he wants to play – it just has to be in the "right situation." Dallas Cowboys fans are clamoring for "America's Team'' to bring back "Gilly,'' an effective player for the team in 2023. But if he wants the insider track to a Super Bowl? If this becomes an NFC East tug-of-war? The Eagles signed Adoree' Jackson during free agency so there is some veteran flavor to this young cornerbacks room. However, Gilmore became a mercenary to help contending teams in the latter stages of his career and joining the Eagles would be a strong decision on his part if he seeks another shot at a championship. Advertisement For Philadelphia (as with Dallas), it's a move that would not, in theory, cost a lot. While the Eagles are more aggressive in these situations, thanks to general manager Howie Roseman, Jerry Jones is in wait-and-see mode. They have valid needs at the position as DaRon Bland is the only healthy and proven guy. In the end, it might be Gilmore's choice and one he might not make until training camps begin July 22. Ex-Rams NFC Champ Urges 5-Time Pro Bowler to Join L.A.

Ex-Rams NFC Champ Urges 5-Time Pro Bowler to Join L.A. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One member of the 2018 Los Angeles Rams has forgiven a past Pro Bowler who denied that team the Vince Lombardi Trophy. And is now urging this talent to join L.A. Advertisement Ex-Rams defender Warren Herring watched how his former team didn't draft a cornerback in April. Then missed on landing both Jaire Alexander and former Ram Jalen Ramsey over the summer. But he mentioned one name still out there on the open market. Ex-New England Patriots star turned NFL journeyman Stephon Gilmore remains a free agent. Herring played against Gilmore in Super Bowl LIII, losing that contest 13-3. But Herring spoke of the Gilmore possibility on The Money Down Podcast. He sent this sales pitch over to the one time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua (17) makes a catch against Minnesota Vikings cornerback Stephon Gilmore (2) during the second half in an NFC wild card game at State Farm J. Rebilas-Imagn Images "Come over to LA. We like you in the blue and gold," Herring said. "You did it to us once. Now, get us one. You owe us one. We need some veteran presence in the room. We'd love to have you.' Advertisement Gilmore delivered five tackles that game. Plus picked off one Jared Goff pass. His Patriots bottled a high-powered Rams offense that evening down in Atlanta. The CB since then has suited up for the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and more recently the Minnesota Vikings. He's intercepted one pass in every season he's played in the league, including one last year in the Twin Cities. He'd enter his 14th season in the NFL if the Rams do bring him over. L.A., though, appears to be confident in its CB room despite the lack of star power at the spot. L.A. lured back Derion Kendrick after briefly waiving him. Cobie Durant enters season four and a contract season. Ahkello Witherspoon finds his way back to the roster on short term deals. Advertisement But clearly, the ex-NFC champ Herring wants to see one more piece get added. In the form of Gilmore. Meanwhile, Gilmore himself said on the podcast he does want to play. But it must be "the right situation" for him. Former Minnesota Vikings CB remains unsigned but optimistic for 2025

With the start of the NFL season just around the corner, one name familiar to Minnesota Vikings fans remains unsigned, yet remains hopeful to land in "the right situation" for the upcoming season. Last season, former Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore suited up for the purple and gold and performed admirably, though maybe not up to the standard he's set for himself during his illustrious career. In 2024 with the Vikings, Gilmore started 15 games, notching one interception and nine passes defensed, with 56 tackles on the season. Those numbers were good enough to contribute to the Vikings being the fifth-ranked scoring defense in 2024, but they also marked the low point in Gilmore's career by PFF grade, with the former Defensive Player of the Year only getting a 60.4 grade. Despite the low score and lack of a deal, Gilmore reportedly is still hopeful to land with a team in 2025, saying on The Money Down podcast: I want to play this year, it's just got to be the right got to be the right situation for me. I'm not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It's just got to be the right place. As for who that "right fit" could be, a reunion with the Vikings would make some amount of sense. Minnesota didn't drastically improve its cornerback situation in the offseason -- though it did bring in veterans Isaiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah in free agency. Gilmore has familiarity with the system, and at least offensively, the Vikings seem poised to make another playoff run. Perhaps more likely, however, is Gilmore remaining unsigned into the season and choosing a team he believes to be a Super Bowl contender as the "right situation" for him. Gilmore has yet to add a Super Bowl ring to his stellar resume, and the chance to sign with a competitor would make a lot of sense in that regard. No matter where Gilmore winds up, the team that signs him will be getting a valuable veteran presence, if nothing else. One who still believes he has something left in the tank and is likely looking to prove something to the doubters -- and maybe to himself -- after what some may consider to be a down season.

Patriots legend putting off retirement for another playing opportunity

Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore still has the urge to play football, despite remaining unsigned after his one-and-done run with the Minnesota Vikings last season. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year turns 35 years old in September, and he is currently looking for the right opportunity to step back on the field. Perhaps something will emerge during training camp for a team in need of a reliable veteran player with a Super Bowl title, five Pro Bowls and two First-Team All-Pro nods on his resume. "I want to play this year, it's just got to be the right situation," Gilmore said, when appearing on The Money Down Podcast, via Bobby Kownack. "It's got to be the right situation for me. I'm not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It's just got to be the right place." Gilmore was one of the most prolific defensive players in Patriots history. He is the only player in franchise history to win the NFL Defensive MVP award. Since leaving New England in 2021, he has played for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys and Vikings. Perhaps another cornerback-needy team will come calling at some point. Gilmore would be a good depth addition and solid veteran presence in an NFL locker room. And who knows? Maybe he still has a big play or two left in the tank to make a difference. Former Patriots Star Stephon Gilmore Linked to Return to Foxborough

Former Patriots Star Stephon Gilmore Linked to Return to Foxborough originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots defense is on the upswing. The hiring of Mike Vrabel as the team's head coach likely helps the defense become a hungry unit, and the fact that the Patriots spent more money than any other team in free agency, means that fresh bodies are coming in. Advertisement The signings of Milton Williams, Harold Landry III, Carlton Davis III, and Robert Spillane will be sure to improve a starting unit that allowed 24.5 points and 343.3 yards per game — both bottom-half of the league marks—in 2024. But business for the Patriots may not yet be concluded. A former Patriot, who happens to also be a former Defensive Player of the Year, is still wandering the free-agent wilderness and has been linked with a return to New England. That player, of course, is veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. According to NESN's Mike Rosenstein, a return isn't out of the question for the two-time All-Pro cornerback. Rosenstein noted that a lot would need to happen for the opportunity to materialize, but if Gilmore could embrace a leadership role, it would become a possibility. Mike Vrabel addresses media at a press conference to announce his hiring as the head coach of the New England Patriots at Gillette Canha-Imagn Images "A poor performance here, an injury there and it's very possible a path back to the Patriots makes sense." Rosenstein writes. "Heck, if Gilmore is willing to embrace a limited role so he can tutor New England's rising stars, who says you can't go home?" Advertisement Gilmore spent the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings, playing in 15 games while defending nine passes and snagging one interception. Before that, he bounced between the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Carolina Panthers in the last three years. It certainly should be said that Gilmore is now 34 and in his twilight years, but that hasn't ruled out a return to the team where he spent four successful seasons. The fact that Gilmore is still a free agent speaks volumes, but the veteran is still searching for a home. Speaking on the Money Down Podcast, Gilmore noted that the situation has to be right for him. "I want to play this year, it's just got to be the right situation," Gilmore said. "I'm not just gonna sign anywhere...I still love the game. I still can contribute. It's just got to be the right place." And where seems more right for Gilmore than the place where he had the most success during his excellent career? The Patriots' cornerback depth is strong, with Christian Gonzalez, Davis III, and Marcus Jones projected to start, but if Gilmore can still go, his presence would likely be more than welcome.
