Bracken Trust choir perform five concerts across Powys

Llandrindod's Bracken Trust Singers performed a series of concerts recently to raise funds. The group held a concert at the Metropole Hotel on June 5, despite low audience numbers. However, the singers were well-received at the town's Bandstand on June 21 for the national Make Music Day event. The audience included Mayor Steve Deeks-D'Silva, the Mayoress, and a wedding party from the Metropole Hotel, complete with bride and groom. The singers struck up with Love and Marriage as the wedding party appeared for photographs. Vera Buckler, the group's leader, praised the singers for giving up their Saturday to perform. Unfazed by the heat on June 24, some members of the group visited the Spa Nursing Home, bringing joy to many residents who sang along with familiar songs. At the end of the performance, the singers were treated to tea, coffee, and homemade chocolate cake and biscuits. The Bracken Singers also performed at the Bracken Trust Headquarters Summer Fete on June 27. Their final performance was at Crosfield House, Rhayader, on July 1. The singers performed their V.E. Day programme, which was postponed from May 8 due to a virus outbreak at the home. Ms Buckler expressed her gratitude to the members who participated in all five engagements, noting that the singers were in top form and gave a very good performance. She said: "It was really touching and heart-warming to see some of the residents happy and singing along to the well-known wartime songs."

Summer fete in Llandrindod Wells raises more than £4,000

A summer fete and garden party held in Llandrindod Wells has raised more than £4,000 to support cancer patients and their families. The Bracken Summer Fete and Garden Party, held on Friday, at The Bracken Trust Centre, was organised by The Bracken Trust, which offers free cancer support services across mid Wales. The event raised £4,025.94, which will go towards supporting patients, families, carers, and bereaved relatives. Emma, charity fundraiser at The Bracken Trust, said: "We cannot thank everyone enough for all the help and support given - there are simply too many people to name individually - but to each and every one of you who had any input into the day, we are truly grateful and could not have pulled off the event without you. "It truly was the epitome of our lovely, local communities and enforced exactly what it means to be a centre for support in the Heart of Wales." More than 20 volunteers helped on the day, including trustees, staff, and members of the fundraising team. This year's event was moved from its usual Saturday slot to a Friday afternoon and evening, attracting around 300 attendees. Steve Deeks-D'Silva, Llandrindod Wells mayor, opened the event with a speech about the trust. Food and drink were provided by The Beefy Boys, Deano's Tiki Bar, and Dan & Tom's Ice Cream Van, while Tesco in Llandrindod Wells donated Welsh cakes. Stalls included cakes, sweets, plants, books, games, and a shop stall. Entertainment was provided by The Bracken Singers, Dai Hilliard, and Llandrindod Wells Theatre Company. TFR Entertainment supplied a PA system and other services free of charge. The event ended with a grand prize draw, with the top prize donated by Graham and Christina Brownley. The Bracken Singers (Image: Bracken Trust) First prize winner Tyler Roberts was in attendance and received warm congratulations from the crowd. Emma said: "The event raised an incredible £4,025.94, all of which will go directly towards supporting our patients, their families, carers, and bereaved relatives. "This phenomenal amount could be used to pay for 161 therapies, nurse appointments or counselling sessions, 80 home visits for those unable to attend the centre or a hub in person, or 536 group activity sessions. "And what's even better is that with this amount, our total fundraising amount since January 2025 has reached £18,459.74 – that's 74 per cent of our £25,000 target for 2025 – and it's only June." READ MORE: One guest said: "We enjoyed our little visit on Friday. What a lovely place." Another said: "Superb day to be part of. "Well done to all involved and for those that came to support." A third attendee commented: "There's so much on at the weekends locally in the summer, so it was great being on a Friday instead so we could come after work." The Bracken Trust has a series of upcoming fundraising events:

Steve Deeks-D'Silva elected as new Llandrindod Wells mayor

Llandrindod Wells councillors have elected their new mayor for 2015/26. Steve Deeks-D'Silva was voted in last week. He has previously served as mayor, being first elected in 2019; he was then re-elected the following year to serve a second term. Cllr Deeks-D'Silva replaces the outgoing Cllr Marcia Morgan, and he was presented with his chain of office at a council meeting last week. Kim Nicholls will serve as deputy mayor and deputy vice chair of the town council for the coming year. He has wasted no time in office and presented a number of annual grant cheques to local recipients at Llandrindod Wells Town Council's AGM on Monday, May 20. These included cheques to the Llandrindod Wells Carnival committee, Children's Eisteddfod, the Community Fridge, Llandrindod Wells Silver Band and the Twinning Association. 'At the annual meeting of the town council held last night, Cllr Steve Deeks-D'Silva was elected as mayor and chair of Llandrindod Wells Town Council,' the council said in a Facebook post on May 21. 'He is pictured below with former chair, Cllr Marcia Morgan. Cllr Kim Nicholls was elected as deputy mayor and vice chair of the council and is pictured below with former vice chair, Cllr Paul Smith. Congratulations to them both.' Cllr Deeks-D'Silva's wife, Lauren, congratulated the pair on Facebook, saying: 'I'm delighted to say that my darling husband Cllr Steve Deeks-D'Silva and Cllr Kim Nicholls are now the mayor and deputy mayor of Llandrindod Wells. 'Congratulations to both of you, it is well deserved. This also makes me the mayor's consort. It's my honour to wear the consort's chain and I look forward to our year ahead.'
