Alpine appoint Nielsen to run F1 team day-to-day
Renault-owned Alpine appointed former sporting director Steve Nielsen on Friday to handle the day-to-day running of the Formula One team after the departure of principal Oliver Oakes. The Enstone-based team, effectively run by executive adviser and former principal Flavio Briatore who will continue to have overall charge, said Nielsen would start work as MD on September 1. Nielsen has most recently been working for Liberty Media-owned Formula One, after a brief period as sporting director at the governing FIA. He was also sporting director when Renault won championships in 2005 and 2006 under Briatore. Alpine, last in the constructors' championship but switching to Mercedes engines next year, also appointed Kris Midgley as head of aerodynamic development. Midgley previously worked at Ferrari as principal aerodynamicist and is also returning to the Enstone factory after a stint from 2007 to 2013. Oakes, the team's fifth boss in four turbulent seasons, resigned in May for personal reasons after being appointed in July last year.

Nielsen to return to Alpine as managing director

The 60-year-old Briton is one of the most experienced and respected sporting managers in Formula 1. Nielsen spent a decade at the team as sporting director through its various guises of Benetton, Renault and Lotus, and won two world title doubles with Fernando Alonso. Advertisement He has also been sporting director at the Caterham, Toro Rosso and Williams teams, as well as for governing body the FIA and for commercial rights holders F1. A statement from Alpine said Nielsen would "oversee the day-to-day running of the team at Enstone, starting from 1 September ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza". Alpine has been through a series of management changes in recent years as it struggles to return to competitiveness. Its latest team principal Oliver Oakes left the team after the Miami Grand Prix in May citing personal reasons. Nielsen is an appointment of Flavio Briatore, who was made executive adviser by Renault last summer with a remit to turn them around.

F1 team Alpine appoints Steve Nielsen as managing director
ENSTONE, England (AP) — Formula 1 team Alpine has appointed Steve Nielsen as managing director to oversee its daily operations. The team said in a statement Friday that Nielsen will start in his role in September ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. He will be reporting to the team's executive advisor Flavio Briatore. The pair has been enjoying a strong relationship for years. Nielsen's appointment came in the wake of Oli Oakes' departure from the Team Principal role in May, a move that had left Briatore covering Oakes' duties. 'The appointment marks a return to the team for Nielsen, who is one of the most long-standing and well-respected figures in the sport and has previously spent multiple stints at Enstone for Benetton and Renault, most notably as Sporting Director during the 2005 and 2006 championship winning years,' Alpine said. Nielsen has also worked with other teams and held roles at the FIA and Formula One.
