Wisconsin basketball product Steven Crowl stats from NBA Summer League debut
Former Wisconsin basketball starting center Steven Crowl began his NBA Summer League run with the Utah Jazz on Sunday. After missing the entirety of Utah's summer league opener in Salt Lake City, Crowl laced up for his first NBA action on Sunday against the Golden State Warriors. In six minutes of play, he snared one defensive rebound and committed one turnover. Crowl, who played 153 games during his lengthy tenure as a Badger, arrived in Utah under an Exhibit 10 contract following the conclusion of the 2025 NBA draft. The one-year, non-guaranteed minimum salary deal essentially provides the Minnesota native an opportunity to showcase his skill set during the Summer League window in July. If successful, Crowl could flip the Exhibit 10 into a two-way deal with the Jazz or find himself on Utah's G League affiliate. Thus far, he has not received an adequate number of minutes to make that type of jump. To make matters more difficult, the Jazz roster includes big men Walker Kessler, Jusuf Nurkic, Micah Potter, Kyle Filipowski and Oscar Tshiebwe. Outside of Tshiebwe and Potter, another former Badger, the collection of forwards and centers has largely displayed a capacity to compete in the NBA during regular seasons in the past. Crowl did work out for the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets in the weeks preceding the draft, so he could potentially look to secure another opportunity with an organization's G League program down the line. His 9.9-point, 5.3-rebound, 2.4-assist season off 54% shooting from the floor and 41% from deep as a senior suggest he could provide a bench spark in the post as a professional, whether it be overseas or in the NBA's developmental pipeline. The Jazz are scheduled to tip off against the Washington Wizards in the organization's next Summer League game on Wednesday, July 16. Where Wisconsin basketball falls in USA TODAY's top 25 after transfer portal, NBA draft
The Wisconsin Badgers landed at No. 16 in USA TODAY's college basketball top 25 rankings following the NBA draft and transfer portal movement. UW, which landed at No. 19 in the outlet's too-early top 25 preseason rankings in April, rose three spots in the hierarchy following its activity in the portal. The Houston Cougars earned USA TODAY's No. 1 position, followed by the Duke Blue Devils (No. 2), UConn Huskies (No. 3), Purdue Boilermakers (No. 4) and Florida Gators (No. 5). Including UW, a total of seven Big Ten squads made the cut. Sandwiched between the Tennessee Volunteers (No. 15) and Arizona Wildcats (No. 17), the Badgers added five players in the portal, three of whom will see a heavy dose of minutes throughout the 2025-26 season. Following the departures of star wing John Tonje, longtime starting center Steven Crowl, starting guard Max Klesmit and bench assets Carter Gilmore, Kamari McGee and Xavier Amos, Greg Gard and the Badgers' recruiting brass brought in transfers Nick Boyd (San Diego State), Andrew Rohde (Virginia), Austin Rapp (Portland), Braeden Carrington (Tulsa) and Elijah Gray (Temple). In addition to the incoming playmakers, star guard John Blackwell maintained his collegiate eligibility when he announced his withdrawal from the 2025 NBA draft. With Tonje and Steven Crowl out of the offensive picture, Blackwell will assume the duties of a No. 1 offensive option in his third season as a Badger. Here's what USA TODAY analysts Paul Myerberg, Jordan Mendoza, Eddie Timanus and Erick Smith wrote about Wisconsin's outlook following the portal and draft: "Wisconsin will build around guard John Blackwell, who took his name out of the draft in favor of another year in Madison. He'll team with former Florida Atlantic and San Diego State guard Nick Boyd will form one of the top backcourts in the Big Ten. The Badgers also brought in a deep threat in wing Andrew Rohde (Virginia) and a very promising young big man in sophomore Austin Rapp (Portland), the reigning West Coast Conference rookie of the year." The Badgers went 27-10 a season ago, enough to pocket a No. 3 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament and spot in the Big Ten title game. While the losses are significant, the talent accumulated in the portal is no joke. Last season, Boyd led the Aztecs in scoring with a career-best 13.9 points per game and dished out 3.9 assists per contest. Rapp, who spent his freshman year at Portland, notched 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks as the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. Boyd, Rapp and Rhode, who chalked up 9.3 points. 4.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game off over 41% shooting from 3-point range, all figure to start for Gard this coming season. Their boost may prove enough for Wisconsin to pocket a Big Ten regular season title and advance to its first Sweet 16 in nearly a decade. How Wisconsin basketball center Steven Crowl can earn a roster spot with the Utah Jazz
Former Wisconsin center Steven Crowl will look to make the most of his Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz this summer. Despite not hearing his named called either Thursday or Friday evening during the 2025 NBA Draft, Crowl is poised to represent an NBA squad during its quest for a summer league title. The Jazz kick-start their summer slate with a three-day circuit at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah from July 5-7 before making the trek to Las Vegas the following week. The one-year, non-guaranteed minimum salary deal enables NBA teams to sign undrafted playmakers to their summer league squads for an opportunity to land on the franchise's G League affiliate -- a low-risk, high-reward move. If Crowl plays extremely well, he could muscle his way into a two-way deal with the team before the 2025-26 season. Prior to the draft, Crowl did work out with the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets. Utah's summer league slate will essentially serve as another extended workout against another batch of NBA hopefuls. Utah will play three games in Salt Lake City from July 5-7 against the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Jazz will then tip off against the New Orleans Hornets (July 11), Golden State Warriors (July 13), San Antonio Spurs (July 14) and Washington Wizards (July 16) in Las Vegas. To claim one of 15 regular season roster spots or one of three two-way contract opportunities, Crowl will need to showcase his ability to stretch the floor as a 3-point shooter, particularly from the top of the key. As a senior, the Minnesota native averaged 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 54% from the field, a blistering 41% from 3 and 82% from the free-throw line. In today's NBA, that type of efficiency plays. 2024 NBA G League Rookie of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe and former Duke standout Kyle Filipowski are listed ahead on the Jazz's depth chart, so if Crowl hopes to scale the three-man hierarchy, his ability to knock down open shots from outside will be paramount. One other important factor: rebounding. The 7-footer averaged just under six rebounds per contest across 153 games during his tenure in Madison, although he never attained the role of an enforcer. In fact, following a zero-rebound outing against Illinois as a senior, his former head coach Greg Gard publicly commented on Crowl's lack of aggressiveness down low. A no-show for Crowl in the painted area cannot happen in either Salt Lake City or Las Vegas. If he corrals three or four rebounds per appearance, plays stout interior defense and disrupts passing lanes near the basket, coaches, scouts and executives may favor his inclusion as a two-way player. That journey commences on July 5 at 9:00 p.m. EST against the 76ers in Utah. Former Wisconsin basketball center adds to his list of NBA workouts
Former Wisconsin Badgers center Steven Crowl is compiling a long list of NBA workouts. Crowl, whose Badgers tenure concluded with an NCAA Tournament round of 32 loss to BYU in late March, has reportedly worked out with the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets over the past few weeks. Advertisement The 7-foot center's most recent workout came with the Pelicans on Thursday, per The Athletic's Will Guillory. Crowl worked out alongside North Carolina's R.J. Davis, Arkansas' Johnell Davis and Kansas' Hunter Dickinson. Earlier this week, the Hornets worked out former Badger Chucky Hepburn alongside Crowl, per Hornets beat writer Rod Boone. The two spent three seasons in Madison together from 2021-24. Crowl isn't the only former Badger to dip his toes into NBA waters this offseason. Star guard John Blackwell worked out with the Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers and Philadelphia 76ers before withdrawing from the 2025 NBA draft in late May. The Minnesota native started 141 of his 153 career appearances in five seasons from 2020-25. In those contests, the veteran averaged 9.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and two assists off a 52.5% shooting rate from the field, 36.3% mark from 3 and 82% clip from the charity stripe. Advertisement During Wisconsin's 27-10 season, Crowl started all 37 games and logged per-game averages of 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He did so while shooting 54% from the field, 41% from 3 and 82% from the free-throw line. At his size, Crowl's shooting ability is an unquestionable commodity in the NBA. Given modern spacing and skill at the center position, the former Badger's progression as a shooter, especially from the top of the key, headlines his potential professional portfolio. Nonetheless, Crowl's odds of being picked in the 2025 NBA draft or signing with an NBA franchise are slim. The workouts will expose him to some NBA personnel, but his most likely route involves a career oversees. Former Wisconsin basketball center signs with NBA team
Former Wisconsin center Steven Crowl signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz after the conclusion of the NBA draft on Thursday, according to KSTP's Darren Wolfson. The contract is a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum salary. It's commonly used to sign undrafted players for the NBA Summer League (July 10 to 20) and preseason. That player can then earn a spot on the team's G League affiliate. With strong play, the contract could be converted to a two-way deal with the NBA team itself. Advertisement Crowl gets his NBA shot after a busy predraft process. Despite not being invited to the NBA combine or G League Elite Camp, the now-former Badger reportedly worked out for the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets in the weeks preceding the draft. The center is making the jump to the professional ranks after a terrific five-year career with the Badgers. He started 141 of his 153 career appearances in five seasons from 2020-25, averaging 9.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and two assists per game while shooting 52.5% from the field, 36.3% from 3 and 82% from the charity stripe. Arguably, his best season came as a senior in 2024-25. In 37 starts, Crowl averaged 9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 54% from the field, a whopping 41% from 3 and 82% from the free-throw line. Notably, Crowl will join John Tonje on the Jazz summer league team. Utah selected Tonje in the second round of Thursday's NBA draft. Both Wisconsin products will look to turn heads during the upcoming summer league circuit. While the two joined the Jazz under different circumstances, both still need strong play to earn a spot on the team's roster. Most likely, that would be the NBA roster for Tonje and the G League roster for Crowl.
