INVINCIBLE Scores Early Season 5 Renewal at Prime Video, Matthew Rhys Joins Season 4 — GeekTyrant
Prime Video isn't done with one of its biggest animated hits. Invincible has officially been renewed for Season 5, long before Season 4 premieres in 2026. The renewal comes just months after the explosive Season 3 finale in March, which broke records as Prime Video's most-watched animated season of all time, according to the streamer. This early greenlight continues a pattern for Invincible as Season 4 was ordered months before Season 3 launched, and the show's third season was locked in not long after its debut in 2021. Clearly, Prime has zero doubts about this series' staying power. Adding to the excitement, Emmy-winning actor Matthew Rhys ( The Americans, Perry Mason ) has joined the voice cast for Season 4. His role is still under wraps, but creator Robert Kirkman hinted during an interview that fans can expect a major comic book villain to finally make an appearance. 'It would certainly be weird if [Thragg] didn't show up in the show,' Kirkman said. 'I mean, I don't know. It's so tough. Here's what I'll say: He's been cast and he's amazing.' While Kirkman didn't confirm who Rhys is playing, there's a good chance that the actor could be lending his voice to the ruthless Viltrumite leader himself. Season 4 is shaping up to be a big one, and the show is already racking up accolades. Invincible recently earned its second-ever Emmy nomination, with Steven Yeun scoring his first nod for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. Yeun returns alongside Sandra Oh and J.K. Simmons to round out the stellar cast. With Season 5 now officially on the way and major players joining the roster, it looks like Invincible is just getting started. The titular hero (Steven Yeun) of "Invincible." The titular hero (Steven Yeun) of "Invincible." Amazon Studios We don't know yet who Rhys will voice in "Invincible," but one possibility is the villain Thragg. The ruler of the Viltrum Empire, Thragg is the chief antagonist of the "Invincible" comics and has yet to show up in the series. "Invincible" creator Robert Kirkman previously told Variety that the upcoming Season 4 would feature the screen debut of Grand Regent Thragg, though there's no telling whether or not it will be Rhys voicing the bad guy. "It would certainly be weird if [Thragg] didn't show up in the show," Kirkman said. "I mean, I don't know. It's so tough. Here's what I'll say: He's been cast and he's amazing." While it's good news for "Invincible" that it's received an early Season 5 renewal, it shouldn't be particularly surprising. The show was renewed for its fourth season before Season 3 saw the light of day, and likewise was renewed for Season 3 before Season 2 streamed. It also shouldn't be too surprising considering the show's stellar performance. Season 3 of "Invincible" proved to be Amazon Prime's most watched animation season of all time. The renewal news comes not long after the show's second Emmy nomination, with Steven Yeun nominated for the first time for outstanding character voice-over performance. Jeffrey Dean Morgan Says Negan Should Not Have Killed Glenn On ‘The Walking Dead'
Negan The Walking Dead decided to change a large number of things from the comics but ultimately kept its most harrowing kill in place, Negan executing Glenn with a bat in the most brutal way possible. That moment has haunted the series for years, as the show's ratings dropped, losing a full two million viewers by the next episode, and the series never recovered. If you ask most Walking Dead viewers when they stopped watching, probably 70% of them will say Glenn's death, which seemed like it went too far even though yes, it was very much faithful to the comic. Other controversial deaths like Carl Grimes, were not. Now, in a First We Feast interview between Maggie's Lauren Cohan and Negan's Jeffrey Dean Morgan to promote their show Dead City, Morgan says outright that if there was one plotline he would change, it's that kill. Morgan: I'm just gonna say this, it would have made both our lives easier, maybe not kill Glenn. Cohan: Yeah Morgan: It would have shifted the stories in a lot of ways, but you wouldn't be mad at me. Cohan: Wait, maybe we'd be like buddies! Morgan: Yeah, we'd probably be buddies! I mean, Glenn probably would have died some other way, but I wouldn't have had anything to do with it. So I'll say that just to be safe. Glenn It seems like a huge mistake in hindsight to both kill Glenn from a story perspective and also to lose actor Steven Yeun, who went on to be both a Best Actor Oscar nominee, the first Asian-American nominated, and went on to win an Emmy for his role in Beef. Now, he stars in one of Amazon's biggest shows, Invincible. Yeun did not seem pleased with his death and never returned to the show for any sort of guest dream/flashback spot the way nearly all other characters did. The Walking Dead made many mistakes over the years, but that was arguably the biggest, comic faithful or not. Now, I've speculated that the entire series is winding down, reduced to just two shows, Maggie and Negan's Dead City and Daryl Dixon's Daryl Dixon. Daryl's show is at least somewhat higher-profile and constantly renewed, where I am less confident in the future of Dead City after season 2 here. AMC does not want to let go, but maybe it's time to move on. The glory days are long behind the series, and yes, it really did peak with the pre-Negan Glenn kill. After that, the fall began.
