Man dives off California waterfall, two others try to save him; all three drown
The bodies of three men who vanished after diving into a Northern California waterfall have now been recovered, authorities said. 'Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,' the Placer County Sheriff's Office posted on social media Sunday. The sheriff's office identified two of the men as Matthew Schoenecker, 50, and Valentino Creus, 59, who both hail from the Los Angeles area. The third was identified as 44-year-old New Yorker Matthew Anthony. The three men went missing the afternoon of June 18, after they reportedly entered the water at Rattlesnake Falls in Soda Springs and did not resurface. The area is located about 40 miles west of North Lake Tahoe. The three men were part of a group of six who ventured to the falls, according to the sheriff's office. The other three people were airlifted out of the area that evening. Personnel from the sheriff's dive and search-and-rescue teams combed the area in search of the missing trio, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Technical Rescue Team. But authorities said those efforts were hindered by poor underwater visibility caused by debris and strong winds. Juan Heredia — a diver with the Stockton-based Angels Recovery Dive Team, a nonprofit that specializes in recovering drowned bodies for grieving families — discovered the trio Saturday morning. Heredia said he located Anthony's body about 45 feet underwater in the waterfall pool that leads into the North Fork American River. He found the bodies of Schoenecker and Creus together under the waterfall, at a depth of about 47 feet. Heredia said he was hired by a family friend and hiked about seven miles through rugged terrain to locate the site and the bodies. Creus, the least experienced of the trio when it came to diving, initially hesitated before jumping into the waterfall, according to Heredia. 'Big Matt [Schoenecker] tried to help Valentino, who was in trouble,' Heredia said, adding that Schoenecker was a former high school diving champion who knew the waterfall well. 'He started panicking and then the two Matts jumped in to save him, but they couldn't and they drowned.'

Former golf pro arrested on suspicion of embezzling $150k from California golf club
Former golf pro arrested on suspicion of embezzling $150k from California golf club A former golf professional was arrested on suspicion of embezzling nearly $150,000 from Elkhorn Golf Club in Stockton, according to authorities. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said the investigation began in November 2024 after club officials reported a 'significant embezzlement.' Property crimes detectives said they found about $147,000 in missing cash deposits between 2022 and 2024 during the investigation. Detectives identified 44-year-old Mykal Parsons, who was employed as the golf professional at Elkhorn Golf Club when the funds were taken, as the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for Parsons, and he was taken into custody by property crimes detectives May 8. He was booked into San Joaquin County Jail on charges of embezzlement and grand theft. Parsons was arrested the same day as Joseph Smith, former executive director of First Tee of San Joaquin, who is accused of embezzling $90,000 from the Stockton-based youth nonprofit. It's unclear if the two criminal cases are related. Sheriff's spokesperson Heather Brent was not able to confirm that as of May 23. Parsons was arraigned May 21 in San Joaquin County Superior Court. He is charged with embezzlement and grand theft. "This case represents a significant breach of trust, and our office is committed to holding those who exploit their positions for personal gain accountable," San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas said. "We will pursue justice to ensure the victims are heard and restitution is sought." Parsons is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. June 11 in Department 8C of San Joaquin County Superior Court for further arraignment. Stockton woman ignored animal care violations, State says
STOCKTON, Mo. – Ozarks First Investigates is uncovering additional information about the woman at the center of an animal cruelty investigation and rescue operation in Cedar County, where multiple dead animals, including skeletal remains of dogs, were found. On April 3, the Humane Society of Missouri rescued 42 dogs and nine cats in dire condition from Sarah Walborn's Stockton-based business, Wynter Knights Kennel and Grooming. Ozarks First Investigates dug through court documents revealing the State of Missouri took legal action against Walborn the month prior, in March 2025. Filings allege that since becoming a licensed breeder in February 2024, Walborn violated multiple provisions of the Missouri Animal Care Facilities Act and the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act. Records show violations include, but are not limited to: (1) Failed to provide adequate veterinarian care for several animals under her care (2) Failed to provide adequate shade for animals (3) Failed to provide adequate, clean, dry bedding material (4) Failed to remove excreta or food waste from enclosures daily (5) Failed to properly identify animals being held at the Facility, purchased, boarded, sheltered, or otherwise acquired, sold, released, given away or otherwise disposed of, or removed from the Facility for any reason (6) Failed to maintain required medical records on all animals brought (7) Failed to conduct daily observations of all animals to assess their health and well-being (8) Failed to provide adequate shelter structure for outdoor facilities housing animals USPS updates service standards, impacting mail delivery times The state claims that despite numerous inspections and citations from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, including four visits from June 2024 to February 2025, Walborn did not address the violations and continued to operate under substandard conditions. The April 3 discovery prompted action from the Animal Cruelty Task Force, which was supported by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the Missouri Attorney General's Office. Corgis, Alaskan Malamutes, and Doodle mixes were among the breeds rescued. 'The severe neglect these poor animals suffered is abhorrent and inexcusable,' said Kathy Warnick, President of the Humane Society of Missouri. 'We will do everything in our power to ensure the rescued dogs and cats are rehabilitated and given a second chance at a happier life.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
