Emma Stone talks 'Eddington', Joaquin Phoenix, and that Cannes bee video with Pascal and Butler

Emma Stone is opening up about a whirlwind of behind-the-scenes moments while promoting Ari Aster's upcoming film Eddington, set to release July 18. During the world premiere in West Hollywood, Stone sat down with Variety and revealed she enjoyed rehearsing alongside Joaquin Phoenix. 'We rehearsed. We went through everything,' she said. Yet, she admitted rehearsals can be hit or miss: sometimes invigorating, other times stressful. Fortunately, working with Phoenix on his character, a small-town sheriff, was one of her more rewarding experiences. Aster's film, set during the early COVID period, centres around a tense mayoral race between Phoenix's character and Pedro Pascal's town mayor. Stone portrays the sheriff's wife, Louise. The cast also includes Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Michael Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., Cameron Mann, and William Belleau. Stone also addressed a viral red-carpet moment at Cannes, where a bee swooped past her during a Eddington photo-op with Pascal and Butler. 'He [Butler] was trying to blow it behind me,' she told host Jimmy Kimmel, adding that Pascal likely 'unleashed that bee'. The playful incident had captured global attention and Stone laughed it off, praising both co-stars for their protective efforts. Shortly before the Eddington premiere, Stone's other upcoming film, Bugonia, debuted its first trailer. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the story features her as a CEO suspected of being an alien, kidnapped by two conspiracy theorist friends played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. With Eddington arriving July 18 and Bugonia set for limited release on October 24 ahead of a wide debut on October 31, Stone continues to demonstrate her range - from dramatic Western-thrillers to dark comedies.

Emma Stone's New Whimsy Pixie Is the Chicest Way To Do A Short Haircut This Summer

The short pixie haircut is a major trend for summer. Aside from being a heatwave-friendly haircut that keeps you feeling cool throughout sweaty weather, it's also a cut that's relatively easily to style and brings an instant dose of avant-garde to your overall look. If you're looking for pixie inspiration, Emma Stone debuted her pixie hair transformation on the Golden Globes red carpet in January and she has continuously delivered fresh new pixie inspo – thanks to her hairstylist Mara Roszak - with every appearance. They're both clearly having fun in this pixie era, with Stone previously sporting a flapper-style pixie at the Oscars, teaming it with wispy bangs at the Louis Vuitton Cruise presentation in Paris and now, Stone is back with a whimsy pixie for the premiere of Eddington in Los Angeles. Roszak's 'whimsy pixie' first appeared in Paris, where she described the look as having an 'airy and light' texture complete with delicate forehead-framing pieces. At the Eddington premiere, the style took on a softer, tousled finish with a fuller, wavy fringe. The style borrows from the rulebook of the French bob: a lived-in, done-undone effect with gentle volume. It's an excellent demonstration of how to style your pixie cut as it continues to grow out and is an elevated summer-ready option for those with wavy or thicker hair, too. Roszak used products from her own haircare line, ROZ, to achieve Stone's look. She reached for ROZ Evergreen (currently unavailable in the UK), a styling cream to define the silhouette of the pixie and add medium-hold to keep flyaways at bay and ROZ Air, a lightweight mist to create texture and add some body to the short haircut. While the choppy pixie and undercut pixie has an edgy, offbeat appeal, this relaxed style brings a chic, nonchalant vibe to the red carpet (especially when styled in Stone's Louis Vuitton off-shoulder, flowing number - kudos to stylist Petra Flannery) and it'll also look equally fresh and polished by the pool and for summer evenings out. We'll be screenshotting it for the next trip to the salon. Medina Azaldin is the beauty editor of ELLE and Harper's Bazaar UK, working across print and digital features. Emma Stone is kidnapped by Jesse Plemons in trailer for ‘Bugonia,' their latest film with Yorgos Lanthimos

By the looks of the first trailer for 'Bugonia,' Emma Stone's latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos will be just as brilliantly bizarre as its predecessors. 'Bugonia,' an English-language remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy 'Save the Green Planet!,' follows two conspiracy theorists who believe Stone's high-powered chief executive character is an alien planning to destroy planet Earth — so they kidnap her. Stone and Lanthimos have previously worked together on 'The Favourite' (2018), 'Poor Things' (2023) and 'Kinds of Kindness' (2024). 'Bugonia' marks their third consecutive film in three years. The trailer — released Thursday by Focus Features — opens with a voiceover, a metaphor and a shot of a beehive. 'The workers gather pollen for the queen,' Jesse Plemons, who worked with Lanthimos and Stone in 'Kinds of Kindness,' says as the trailer cuts to Stone's swaggering CEO. After a quippy kidnapping montage with Plemons and Aidan Delbis' characters set to Green Day's 'Basket Case,' Stone is shown lying unconscious in a bed. Jarring chords alternate with action-packed footage of fist fights and police chases, all framed in Lanthimos' quintessential style. 'How can you tell she's an alien?' Delbis asks. Plemons replies, 'Well, the signs are obvious.' The conspiracy theory — and the truth about the CEO's extraterrestrial status — remain anything but obvious in this initial teaser; fans will have to wait for the film's release. 'Bugonia' is set for a limited run on Oct. 24 before expanding wide Oct. 31. Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone round out the cast.

The mystery of the elusive ‘communications fairy godmother'

Liberal hack Wednesday was meant to be an opportunity for the Liberals to reset. Sussan Ley, the party's first female leader, delivered her address to the National Press Club, calling for, among other things, better recruitment and retention of women. The message was clearly lost on whoever manages the party's socials. Around midnight someone posted a series of lewd, pornographic images of scantily clad women to the @Liberalaus Instagram account's stories. A social media Freudian slip? The act of a rogue intern? Whatever the explanation, the offending material was thankfully swiftly removed. 'Overnight the social media account of a contractor used by the party was hacked, leading to the posting of unauthorised material on the Liberal Party's Meta accounts at around midnight,' a party spokesman told CBD. 'All material was removed within 10 minutes of it being posted and the matter was urgently raised with the Australian Cyber Security Centre and with Meta overnight. We apologise for any offence caused.' Getting stoned Meanwhile, in NSW the Liberal Party is going back to the future. During a post-budget fundraising lunch at state parliament on Tuesday, shadow treasurer Damien Tudehope revealed that former state director turned interim state director Chris Stone would now have the job for as long as he pleased. Loading And frankly we can't imagine why anyone else would want the most cursed gig in politics. Stone was first meant to quit that role after the 2022 election loss but stuck around until late 2023 because the party couldn't find a suitable replacement. Its first choice to succeed him, Luke Dixon, was dumped before even starting, after this column revealed he'd once said rude things about Tony Abbott on social media. The job ultimately went to Richard Shields, who took the fall last year after the Liberals forgot to register candidates for local government elections. Stone was brought in to steady the ship on a contract until June 30. Now it seems like he's staying on for the foreseeable future. The Liberals' post-budget lunch was otherwise a fairly sad affair, drawing about 50 to 60 friends of the party. In contrast, Labor's own post-budget business dialogue on Tuesday night was a winner, with a couple of hundred guests including party elders, business types and lobbyists from across the political aisle. Premier Chris Minns' smooth delivery, and his praise for Gladys Berejiklian's role in delivering the Sydney Metro, even impressed Liberals in attendance. Also on the dance card was a 'fireside chat' between Treasurer Daniel Mookhey and News Corp columnist Joe Hildebrand, who despite cosplaying as an anti-progressive bloviator in print is a close friend of the ALP. So close that CBD spotted him hanging out with the True Believers when we gatecrashed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's election victory party last month. Pesky PEXA CBD brought word last month that electronic conveyancing platform PEXA had suffered a brief weekend outage. It was manna from heaven for PEXA's rival Sympli, which has been trying with limited success to break the firm's effective monopoly over the e-conveyancing space. Last week Sympli conceded defeat of sorts and proposed working with PEXA, rather than trying to shatter its monopoly. Still, last month's outages drew the attention of NSW parliament, with the upper house voting on Wednesday to pursue a select committee into PEXA, including on competition reforms and the impact of outages. Labor's Transport Minister John Graham agreed to back the committee, proposed by Taylor Martin (who was expelled from the Liberals for his abusive conduct toward former federal MP Lucy Wicks). But Graham also noted the number of reviews, inquiries and other work being done into electronic conveyancing reform happening already at a state and federal level, a sentiment that was affirmed by a PEXA spokesperson. 'PEXA will fully co-operate with the committee. As with current and previous inquiries, we will continue to outline the many benefits PEXA's world-first e-conveyancing platform has delivered to the property transaction process,' a PEXA spokesperson told CBD.
