She was busted for cheating at the Olympics. Now she's coaching in the A-League

A few days before Imane Khelif became the centre of the world's attention, the biggest controversy at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris involved a drone. On the eve of New Zealand's first women's football match, Rebekah Stott spotted the craft hovering over the team's training session. 'We were just doing throw-ins, and I was waiting for Ali Riley to throw me the ball and I hear this noise,' Stott told Sam Mewis, the former American international, on her podcast The Women's Game last year. 'I'm a bit of a drone enthusiast, I've got one myself, and so I hear this noise, and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh ... is that a Mavic Pro?'' Quite aside from the fact that flying drones above people was illegal in France, Stott's discovery unravelled one of the biggest scandals in women's football history. It turned out that the drone had been sent there by the Canadian national team, and that this was something they'd been doing for quite a while. Subsequent investigations by the Canadian media found that their junior and senior national teams, for both men and women, had been using drones as far back as 2016 to spy on opposition training sessions in a bid to gain insights on tactics and personnel. Canada's women were docked six points, hampering their bid to defend their Olympic title, and their coach Bev Priestman, one of her assistants and an analyst were all sent home. FIFA later banned the three of them from participating any football-related activity for a year – and ending any chance that Football Australia, who have long admired Priestman's coaching, would approach her to become the next Matildas coach. So when Wellington Phoenix appointed Priestman's wife, Emma Humphries, a Kiwi, to head up the club's academy, then announced that they would reveal the identity of the new head coach of their A-League Women's team in July – which just happened to be when Priestman's suspension was due to expire - all signs pointed to one thing. On Wednesday, three days after the ban ended, the worst-kept secret in the game was confirmed: Priestman has signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix, becoming arguably the most credentialled coach in ALW history, and also the most contentious.

LOI transfers: Jamie Stott joins Derry City with Ciaron Harkin moving to Sligo Rovers

Derry City have brought in defender Jamie Stott from crisis club Morecambe. The 27-year old has joined the Brandywell club on an 18-month deal, offering a new option as a left-sided centre-back for manager Tiernan Lynch. Stott was voted Players' Player of the Season at Morecambe last year as the Shrimpers were relegated from the Football League. They are currently battling for their very survival as a entity due to financial and ownership issues, opening the door for Derry to sign Stott. He counts Oldham Athletic, Stockport and Halifax Town among his previous sides. City boss Lynch is pleased with his latest addition: "Jamie comes here with plenty of experience in the EFL and National League and will strengthen our defensive options ahead of a very busy few months. "He's a big, strong lad and seems happy with the ball at his feet. "He just arrived this morning and took part in a full training session today and we're really looking forward to working with him." Dipo Akinyemi, Adam Frizzell and Brandon Fleming have already moved to Derry this window, as well as loan signing Alex Bannon. Midfielder Ciaron Harkin is the latest player to join Sligo Rovers, departing the Brandywell. Harkin signs with Rovers until the end of the 2025 season, with the club retaining an option on the player for 2026. The 29-year-old is the sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with John Russell already adding Patrick McClean, Seb Quirk, Ryan O'Kane, James McManus and Sean Stewart this month. The Derry native began his senior career with the Candystripes and has had his career blighted by injuries in recent years. He was a regular for City from 2019-2021 but later suffered devastating cruciate ligament ruptures which kept him sidelined for almost two years. Harkin made a return to action last year and went out on loan to Coleraine at the end of the year to get game time under his belt. Lynch gave Harkin six appearances this campaign, but he struggled to break into the side, leading to Bit O' Red boss John Russell making a move. Russell said: "It's a brilliant signing of a player I've always admired. He's a midfielder who can do a bit of everything. He's tenacious, good on the ball, legs, energy, he's coming to us at the stage of his career for a fresh challenge. "He's a Derry boy, he's had his injuries in the past but he's over those now. He's hungry to play, sitting on the bench is not easy for any player but especially at his age, he's in the prime of his career, at 29."

Derry City snap up Morecambe's Player of the Season on 18-month deal

Derry City boss Tiernan Lynch has signed Morecambe defender Jamie Stott on an 18-month contract. The 27-year-old has signed on the dotted line at the Ryan McBride Brandywell after a campaign that saw the Shrimps relegated from League Two, but in which he earned the Players' Player of the Season. Stott has also played for Oldham Athletic, Stockport and Halifax Town. Derry boss Lynch said: 'Jamie comes here with plenty of experience in the EFL and National League and will strengthen our defensive options ahead of a very busy few months. 'He's a big, strong lad and seems happy with the ball at his feet. 'He just arrived this morning and took part in a full training session today and we're really looking forward to working with him.' Stott's former club Morecambe are in turmoil, and have been suspended from the National League by the league's compliance and licencing committee. Harper hits 350th career homer, 4 teammates also go deep in Phillies' loss to the Red Sox

Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper hit the 350th homer of his career and four Phillies teammates also went deep Wednesday night, yet it wasn't enough for Philadelphia to beat the Boston Red Sox. Harper's milestone home run came in the first inning off Boston starter Lucas Giloito. He hit a first pitch fastball into the second deck in right field at Citizens Bank Park. The 439-foot homer run was his longest since a 451-foot blast on Sept. 23, 2023, against the New York Mets. 'It's pretty awesome,' Harper said after the Phillies' 9-8, 11-inning loss to Boston. 'On an individual note, I'm super happy about it. But I always want to win, obviously, and not getting the win was pretty tough.' The homer was the hardest hit ball of the season for Harper, who has begun to look like his former MVP self in recent weeks. In his last 10 games, the 32-year-old slugger has 16 hits, 14 for extra bases, including five home runs. He became the 105th player in MLB history to reach 350 homers in a career and is the eighth active player to accomplish the feat. He is also the youngest in that group of eight to reach that milestone. Despite the loss, the Phillies can take some solace that the offense has been starting to drive the ball with more authority since the All-Star break. 'It's disappointing (to lose)' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. 'But the offense was good tonight.' Harper's homer came right after a home run by Kyle Schwarber, who has gone deep four times in the last six games and ranks third in the NL with 34 homers. Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott and J.T. Realmuto also homered in the loss for the Phillies. Realmuto's homer was his first against a left-handed pitcher this season. Stott also doubled, playing in a game after his wife gave birth to their second child, a son, earlier on Wednesday. 'It was a big night for the offense,' Harper said. 'I thought we've swung the bat well all series. I thought we had some great at-bats. I'm super pumped for (Stott) obviously, having a baby at 3:45 in the morning, not getting much rest and then coming in and (doing what he did in the game) - that's baseball. I swear it happens every time.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3
