Long Grove's Annual Strawberry Fest sees romance with strawberry-infused cups of comfort
It was indeed the summer of love at Long Grove's signature Strawberry Fest this year. Over the three consecutive-day weekend starting on Friday, June 27, people celebrated birthdays or got engaged in Long Grove. One couple made tentative plans for their wedding to be held outside at next year's Strawberry Fest. Dressed in strawberry-themed clothing on June 28 and dancing in front of the main stage on Robert Parker Coffin Road in the same spot where they met at Strawberry Fest 2023 were Kimberly Kushlakus of Round Lake Beach and Jay Goeppner of Hoffman Estates and Chicago. Goeppner said it is, 'Strawberry Fields forever, and it's called being in love and finding that right person in life and making sure that you honor the places and people that were there for you. 'It was an amazing night,' Goeppner recalled of meeting Kushlakus. 'You never know, some very mystical and magical things can happen,' Goeppner added. It was 'absolutely' love at first sight, confirmed Kushlakus, who first saw Goeppner using an ATM machine near the stage midway. 'I fell in love. 'I loved him before he even saw me,' Kushlakus said with a smile. 'My friend and I, we came here to this spot and we were watching the band and the next thing I know, he (Goeppner) was right beside me,' Kushlakus recalled. 'And we danced all night. We want to get married right here in this spot,' Kushlakus said while standing in front of the main stage. After meeting the two lovebirds in person who had revealed their hope for a 2026 outdoors wedding at Strawberry Fest, 'We're going to figure out how to make that work,' said Ryan Messner of Barrington, Long Grove insurance business owner and president of the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association. On Saturday afternoon, one other couple got engaged at Strawberry Fest, Messner confirmed. 'It's always that small city charm that people want to come to, and they find romance here as well,' Messner said. 'It's exciting because even like in the winter, when we did our carriage rides, we had three couples get engaged. 'And they all want to do it at the (covered wooden) bridge (Historic Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge),' Messner said. 'We're part of it, we want to be part of the community, if there are things like this (weddings) that we can create, we're going to do it.' The iconic covered bridge continues to take recorded hits by oversized vehicles since its reopening in August 2020. Clear height restriction signs are posted on the bridge (at 8'6'). A newer metal frame has protected the bridge's driveability, and the green wooden part gets replaced. The covered bridge would experience no accidental hits over Strawberry Fest, among Long Grove's roster of main fundraiser festivals, since the main stage is situated in front of the bridge, and the event closed off Robert Parker Coffin Road. Strawberry Fest is held on the fourth weekend of June and features strawberry-infused cuisine such as strawberry donuts, strawberry sangria and chocolate-dipped strawberries. Enjoying a fresh strawberry treat with her grandparents from Long Grove, Michele and Joel Polakoff, was Mia Lasko, 6, a rising first-grader of Buffalo Grove. Mia wore pink and had a pink balloon. 'We come to all the fests because they're wonderful, every one,' Michele Polakoff said. In the spring of 2024, scenes were filmed in Long Grove for the Great American Family channel production called 'Once Upon a Christmas Wish,' released late last year. The movie features Mario Lopez of 'Access Hollywood' and 'Saved by the Bell' fame, along with spouse Courtney with their son Dominic. Joel and Michele Polakoff were extras in that holiday film. 'Long Grove was a perfect town for that kind of a movie,' Michele Polakoff said. 'Long Grove is romantic.' Also pretty in pink at Strawberry Fest with her pink balloon was Alice Voigt, 18 months, of Inverness. 'This is our first time here, it's great, the music,' said Alice's mother Laura Voigt, who had plans to try some Strawberry Fest barbecue plus chocolate dipped strawberries. Going for a spin on a carnival ride were the Dean siblings of Long Grove, Miranda Dean, 14, a rising high school freshman and Alexander Dean, 11, a rising sixth-grader. 'It's adorable,' said their parent, Suzi Dean, about their family hometown of Long Grove. According to all festival proceeds help to fund improvement projects including street lighting, Covered Bridge Park maintenance, road signage, banners and free activities such as yoga and music in the park, plus winter holiday attractions. Messner estimated that at least 35,000 people attended the paid-entry Strawberry Fest 2025 with the sunny, warm weekend weather. 'We appreciate everyone coming out,' Messner said. 'We love to provide a great experience.'

Strawberries on the brain? This full moon could be the treat for you
Unlike Strawberry Fields, the upcoming Strawberry Moon is something real and is expected to light up the night sky this week. At around 3:44 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, June's full moon is expected to reach peak illumination, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The moon's nickname does not reflect in the moon's hue, which should resemble any other full moon, wrote. The Strawberry Moon could have a yellow-orange hue as a result of wavelengths of light being scattered along the horizon. Though this full moon will not be a supermoon, it could look larger due to a 'moon illusion,' continued. This effect causes the human brain to think objects are bigger when they are close to the horizon. The 'Strawberry Moon' nickname stems from terms used by various Native American nations, the Almanac reported. Algonquian tribes in the Northeast, along with the Ojibwe and Lakota peoples, marked the ripening of 'June-bearing' strawberries to be gathered with the coming of the full moon. Other names reflect rebirth and abundance, with the Tlingit people calling it the Birth Moon and the Anishinaabe naming it the Blooming Moon, the Almanac wrote. The Cree call it the Egg Laying Moon and the Hatching Moon. The Strawberry Moon marks the last night sky event before the summer solstice on June 20, which marks the longest day of the year and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the Almanac wrote. We ate out at garden centre restaurant in North Wales that everyone raves about
The Bellis Brothers was first established in 1860 and began by growing fresh fruit and vegetables for markets in the Midlands and North West. Since then, they have diversified into a farm shop, garden centre, restaurant and seasonal pick your own. The independently-run family business is located in the semi-rural Dee Valley on the outskirts of Holt Village near Wrexham and the Welsh Border. Their story began when Mr Charles Bellis planted a strawberry in his garden called Black Prince, a dark and very sweet berry. In the following year the runners from these plants were planted in surrounding fields. From these small beginnings grew one of the largest strawberry-growing firms in the country. The strawberries used to be picked by teams of 'Strawberry Dodgers'. The term 'dodger' was used as the people used to dodge around the country seeking work in the fields at planting times and harvesting. The strawberry season was anticipated with dread by the local villagers as pitched battles between locals and the pickers were commonplace in season. This occurred mostly on Sundays when people from Wrexham, intent on overcoming the then Welsh drinking laws would cause trouble on the way along Holt Road to get to a pub over the border in Farndon. Luckily, you won't find much trouble at the garden centre these days, but the venue is still a very busy place. The car park was already jammed packed full when we arrived just before noon on a Friday afternoon. The award-winning farm shop was absolutely rammed with customers. We even saw a full-size tractor with a scarecrow farmer at the wheel in the middle of one of the aisles. The shop was brimming with local produce from the daily essentials such as bread, milk and eggs (all from within a 17-mile radius) through to luxury ice cream, preserves, chutneys, cakes and a fantastic craft beer selection. There was even a farm butchers and deli with a variety of cheeses, pies, pastries, sliced meats and ready prepared salads. The Strawberry Fields restaurant is located in a separate rear building within the garden centre. If you get lost, just follow the smell of freshly-brewed coffee, which starts to overwhelm the scent of the many potted plants. The inside interior of the restaurant looks a bit like a huge school canteen. You grab a tray and shuffle around a huge long counter, packed with various hot and cold food options. However, this seemed a really slick operation, which served the many customers, all ordering lunch at the same time, really quickly. The menu had all the usual garden centre options such as cakes, soups, sandwiches and baked potatoes along with all day breakfasts and crowd pleasers such as braised beef pie and chips, gammon or scampi. Afternoon tea with cream scones and sandwiches were set at a very reasonable £11.50 a person. There was an extensive children's menu on offer with a large play ground outside. We ordered our food and made our way to a pleasant outdoor terrace, which overlooked the Welsh fields. The outside area had parasols, which had me totally flummoxed on how to put them up? Until an old couple on the next table, showed me how easy it was! We needed a bit of shade as the outside eating area was a real sun trap. My good wife ordered the veggie burger, which was served with sweet homemade chilli jam, chips and a side salad. The veggie burger was packed full of tasty fresh vegetable ingredients rather than being one of those meat substitute versions. The chilli jam added a bit of tang to proceedings and I pretended I needed to try her chips 'for the review' but was just actually stealing them. They were fresh, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I went for the tuna mayonnaise salad, after seeing how nice the ingredients looked in the salad bar. The salad consisted of beetroot, nut celery raisins, pasta, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, apple and red onion. It was served with a massive dollop of tuna, which wasn't too saturated in mayonnaise, which is a personal pet hate of mine. It all tasted very fresh and wholesome, as you would expect from a local farm shop. It was too hot for coffee or tea, so we settled for a bottle of Welsh still water and a refreshing elderflower drink served in a tin. We later noticed a free water dispenser inside the café, which was a nice touch. I don't know what it is, but there's just something appealing about wandering aimlessly through the various aisles of vases, potted plants, artisan jams and quirky gifts. You can certainly see why the Bellis Brothers has been named best food hall and farm shop for two consecutive years by the Garden Centre Association. Of course, you must always reward yourself with a visit to the obligatory café, which is always the busiest place in any garden centre. This one certainly didn't disappoint with great looking food on neighboring tables as well as our own outside table. Strawberry Fields Forever.
