South Dakota confirms 2nd case of measles in 2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) says a second case of measles has been detected in the state in 2025, this one also in West River. The DOH sent the announcement out at 4:48 p.m. on Friday, informing the public that there was potential of a measles exposure at two locations in Pennington County. 21-year-old Brookings man arrested for rape of minor These were the Sam's Club at 925 Eglin St in Rapid City on June 1 from noon to 6:00 p.m., and the Dakota Premier Medical Clinic at 2006 Mt Rushmore Rd in Rapid City on June 2 from 11:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The DOH is advising any person who visited those locations during the mentioned time frames that they may have been exposed to measles, and are asked to self-monitor for symptoms of measles for 21 days after the exposure date. Measles symptoms appear in two stages. In the first stage, the individual may have a runny nose, cough, and a slight fever. The eyes may become reddened and sensitive to light while the fever consistently rises each day. The second stage begins on the third to seventh day of symptoms and consists of a temperature of 103-105°F, and a red blotchy rash lasting for four to seven days. The rash usually begins on the face and then spreads down to the trunk and out to the arms and legs. Information from the DOH 'We are sharing this information to help individuals who may have been exposed take steps to protect their health,' said State Epidemiologist Joshua Clayton. 'Any South Dakotan who lack immunity from vaccination or past infection can get the MMR vaccine to prevent measles infection and its complications.' South Dakota's first measles case of 2025 was reported on June 2, and was identified in a man in Meade County who developed the infection after traveling internationally. North's Larson having sensational track season
Josie Larson has been a gift that just keeps giving for the Eau Claire North track and field team. In her junior year, Larson already holds two schools records and is on her way to breaking a third. On May 9 at the Stan Bar Relays, Larson set her personal record in the shot put after throwing a distance of 38 feet, 6 inches. Advertisement Larson holds the school record for the both pole vault and discus. The discus record is now 134 feet, 2 inches. The Big Rivers Conference Championship took place at Chippewa Falls High School on May 19. Larson pole vaulted 11 feet, 6 inches. She was named the field MVP for the meet. Breaking the school record at the conference championship meet is something Larson said will forever be a core memory. 'I came into this season thinking it was definitely in reach,' Larson said. 'I continued to just practice and gain more confidence. When it finally happened I was kind of just stunned, but the environment and the emotions were all there. It was awesome.' Advertisement She said the motivation to get into track and field came from both of her grandfathers. 'My grandpa was a pole vaulter and when I was younger he would always say, 'You're gonna be a pole vaulter one day,' and now I'm here,' Larson said. 'Throwing was just one of those things that I tried and enjoyed. I knew I was I on the muscular side, so I gave it a shot and it turned out to be something good.' Larson is an all-around athlete. She is a competitive gymnast for the Huskies and she is also a member of the volleyball team. North coach Adam Sturgis has a list of compliments dedicated to Larson. 'She truly is a generational talent in a number of different ways,' Sturgis said. 'And what kind of separates her is that she outworks everybody, there's no doubt about it. And I am not talking about just on the track, but in the classroom as well.' Advertisement Sturgis said Larson has truly had an influence on the team. 'She's in a zone when she's here and that picks up all the kids around her,' he said. 'She has upped the level of intensity from practices to competitions.' Sturgis may be the head coach, and the team may have top-notch coaches for Larson's events, but he said Larson is not a product of him. 'I almost feel more like an orchestra director where she's producing the music. I can't take credit for most of what she's done because she's done all the work,' he said. Sturgis was impressed by the countless hours of work Larson put in during the offseason. Advertisement 'She does a lot of work with pole vault camps and clubs. There's a private pole vault club in Menomonie that she's a part of and that's where she's really grown,' he said. 'It's so vital to take that time when you have the opportunity to really make some improvements outside of the season.' Larson does not get to practice sprinting often because of her shot put and discus practice, but she does a great job in balancing all three events. 'She's going to continue to improve, and the stronger she gets the more explosive she gets,' Sturgis said. 'She has that type of talent where it is very realistic to see her on the podium at state.' Larson's plan is to take her track and field talents to the collegiate level. Advertisement 'I know that I am capable of so much more and there's always something I can do better. There's always room for improvement,' she said. 'Nothing is perfect.' The Huskies are heading into regionals on Tuesday and Larson said there are some nerves but she is not new to this. 'I have the ability and I've been gifted the ability to be able to move my body efficiently,' she said. 'I have the energy, I have the strength, I have the people to support me, so why not push myself to my full potential.'

Buffalo Chip announces rally lineup

There's a long lineup of bands and musicians set to take stage from August 1-10 at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip campgrounds. Hundreds of Heartland RV layoffs coming in June
ELKHART — The Indiana Department of Workforce Development received Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification from Heartland Recreational Vehicles LLC of 147 impending layoffs among seven factory locations. The notification indicates closures affect computer occupations, welders, cutters, solderers, brazers, sales representatives and managers, painters, transportation, HR managers and specialists and electrical installers and repairers. The WARN notice was submitted on April 21, with the layoffs scheduled to begin June 20. Affected plants are Plant 1, 5, 10, 14, 19, 69 all in Elkhart and Plant 402 in Middlebury. A Sturgis, Michigan-based plant was also affected by the lay-offs. There, 121 individuals are expected to be laid off on June 20, according to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity as the factory closes.

Pair of late-half goals gives Three Rivers girls soccer home win over Sturgis
THREE RIVERS — A late goal in each half by Three Rivers gave the Wildcats a home victory over Sturgis on Monday in girls soccer. Three Rivers was playing host to the visiting Trojans on the turf pitch and won the contest, 2-0. The victory improves the Wildcats to 6-5-3 and it is the teams second win in as many matches following a win over Dowagiac, 6-3, the other day. Advertisement The loss for Sturgis ended a two-game winning streak for the Trojans, who are now 5-9-1. It came at the 2:12 mark of the opening half. For the first half, Three Rivers had six shots on goal. The 1-0 lead held up for nearly the entire second halfl. Then, with just 2:56 remaining in the contest, Paige McDonald found the back of the net to give Three Rivers a 2-0 advantage. Three Rivers totaled 13 shots on net compared to two for Sturgis. The Cats also had four corner kicks. Advertisement On Saturday, Sturgis picked up a pair of wins at the Quincy Oriole Classic. The Trojans beat host Quincy on penalty kicks in the first match. It ended as a 0-0 score following regulation, but Macy Hopkins was able to pump one past the goalie in PKs to give Sturgis the win. In the second matchup, Sturgis beat Parchment 3-1. Scoring goals for the Trojans in that matchup were Carolina Garcia, Andrea Martinez and Evelyn Mendoz. Hopkins, Andrea Martinez and Abbie Hughes each registered an assist.
