What to watch on TV and streaming today: Mix Tape, Manhunter and Trainwreck: Balloon Boy
Mix Tape BBC Two, 9pm First love. For some it's a painful matter, but for others, it's an amazing roller-coaster ride of emotions that they never forget and hold close to their hearts forever. Alison and Daniel, the main characters in this new four-part drama, fall firmly in the latter category. We first meet them in 1989 when they're teenagers, forming a bond over a shared passion for music. The pair eventually go their separate ways, and we then catch up with them in the modern day while they're living on the opposite sides of the world – Alison in Sydney, Australia, and Daniel in their native Sheffield in South Yorkshire. However, the pair reconnect, once again due to a song they still love. And being back in touch makes them wonder what might have been had they never parted. Teresa Palmer and Jim Sturgess play Alison and Daniel, with Bridgerton's Florence Hunt and newcomer Rory Walton-Smith as their younger selves. But the real interest for Irish viewers comes from the fact that despite being largely set in Sheffield, it was filmed in Dublin and Co Wicklow. Plus, the screenplay was adapted by bestselling Dublin-born author Jo Spain from Jane Sanderson's novel, and was made by Irish production company Subotica. Sue Deeks, head of BBC programme acquisition, says of the tale: 'Accompanied by a cracking 1980s soundtrack, Mix Tape is an enjoyable blend of nostalgia, romance and heartbreak – it really is the perfect summer treat!' Jamie-Lee O'Donnell joins cast of new BBC comedy being filmed in Dublin
JAMIE-LEE O'DONNELL is among the cast of a new BBC comedy which is being filmed in Dublin. The actor, who shot to fame in the hit series Derry Girls, will star alongside the likes of Alex Lawther and Laurie Kynaston in Leonard and Hungry Paul. Filming has now begun on the six-part series being produced by Subotica for the BBC, which is based on the best-selling debut novel of the same name by Irish author Rónán Hession. 'At a time when most shows involve dragons, detectives, or existential dread, Leonard and Hungry Paul takes a slower route - through kindness, the quiet gravity of small things, and the occasional game of backgammon,' director Andrew Chaplin says of the show. 'Which is proof that not all heroes shout - some just know when to stay quiet.' Hession said he is 'delighted' to see his book adapted for the screen. 'It's a real privilege as a writer to see my work being brought to life in a different creative form,' he explained. Jamie-Lee O'Donnell to star in TV adaptation of Leonard and Hungry Paul
Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, Fool Me Once actor Laurie Kynaston and The End of the F***ing World star Alex Lawther have been announced as the leading cast for the upcoming TV series Leonard and Hungry Paul. The six-part series, which is an adaptation of Irish author Rónán Hession's acclaimed novel of the same name, is currently filming in Dublin. The story follows "two unique board-gaming friends meandering through leafy suburban life, charting a story about Judo, ancient Rome, first loves, and the expansion of the Universe". Andrew Chaplin, known for the TV series The Full Monty and Alma's Not Normal, will direct from scripts by Richie Conroy and Mark Hodkinson. Chaplin said of the series: "At a time when most shows involve dragons, detectives, or existential dread, Leonard and Hungry Paul takes a slower route - through kindness, the quiet gravity of small things, and the occasional game of backgammon. "Proof that not all heroes shout - some just know when to stay quiet." Leading star O'Donnell said she was "delighted to be part of a wonderful story, with a gorgeous cast and crew." Novelist Hession added: "I am delighted to see Leonard and Hungry Paul being adapted for the screen. "It's a real privilege as a writer to see my work being brought to life in a different creative form." Independent production company Subotica is producing for BBC Northern Ireland in association with BBC Comedy, Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and RTÉ, with Avalon co-producing and distributing internationally.

Filming has begun in Dublin for the upcoming TV series Leonard and Hungry Paul, produced by Subotica for the BBC. Filming has officially begun on the new 6x30 series Leonard and Hungry Paul, produced by independent production company Subotica for the BBC. The feel-good series - announced as part of the BBC Comedy Festival in Belfast - is currently filming in Dublin and is based on the award-winning, best-selling novel of the same name by Rónán Hession and adapted by writers Richie Conroy and Mark Hodkinson.
