2 boys drown in abandoned quarry
Hyderabad: An 11-year-old boy from Kapra and his eight-year-old cousin from Guntur, who went missing on Wednesday from Arundhati Nagar in Jawaharnagar, were found dead in a water-filled abandoned quarry nearby on Wednesday. Police suspect the boys drowned while playing in the water. Both did not know swimming. Durga Prasad (11) was a class III student and Subramanyam (8) was in class I. About a month ago, Durga Prasad's mother Swathi, who was abandoned by her husband, had come to live with her ailing aunt Yadamma in Arundhati Nagar Colony. A few days ago, Yadamma's daughter Anjamma, who lives in Guntur, came to visit her mother along with son Subramanyam. At around 10 am on Wednesday, Durga Prasad and Subramanyam had left home to play in the neighbourhood but did not return. After unsuccessfully searching for them in the neighbourhood, Swathi lodged a complaint with Jawaharnagar police on Thursday morning. While police were searching for the boys, their bodies surfaced in the abandoned Bandabavi quarry located in Arundhati Nagar Colony. "The quarry was abandoned about two decades ago. Half of its boundary has been fenced. The boys were not locals and they might have accidentally drowned while trying to play in the water," SI B Ramu said. The bodies have been sent for postmortem. Around 15 charging points to come up at Vidyadharapuram bus depot in Vijayawada
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh state road transport corporation ( APSRTC ) authorities in the NTR district have initiated work to develop the electricity infrastructure required to charge electric buses at the Vidyadharapuram bus depot in Vijayawada city. The NTR district is set to receive a fleet of 100 e-buses out of the 750 e-buses allocated to APSRTC under the PM e-Bus Seva Scheme. The RTC authorities have designated the Vidyadharapuram bus depot for the operational maintenance and charging of the 100 electric buses, although the expected handover timeline has not yet been confirmed by the district RTC authorities. In this regard, APSRTC has written to the electricity department requesting the laying of a new 132/33 kV high-tension (HT) electric line to the Vidyadharapuram bus depot. The electricity department has agreed and asked the state-owned transport corporation to bear the expenditure required for laying the HT line. Vidyadharapuram bus depot manager Subramanyam told TOI that the electricity department has given its in-principle approval to lay the HT line and requested a demand draft (DD) of Rs 4.66 crore, which covers the cost of laying the new line. Andhra temple wall collapse: Construction done in haste for Chandanotsavam, sources say
VISAKHAPATNAM: The tragic incident at the Simhachalam temple during the annual Chandanotsavam on Wednesday, has sparked widespread public anger and criticism. A The wall, reportedly built just five days prior to the annual festival, gave way following a spell of moderate rain. Thousands of devotees had gathered at the hilltop temple for 'Nijaroopa Darshanam' of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. Families of the victims and eyewitnesses alleged serious negligence in the construction, and oversight of festival arrangements. The structure was part of the ongoing PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) Scheme, for which the Ministry of Tourism had sanctioned `54.04 crore in December 2022 for development works at Simhachalam Devasthanam. The project is being executed by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation. Tourism Regional Director Subramanyam confirmed that tenders had been called for the works by the Tourism Department, but declined to disclose the contractor's name. However, sources claimed that the contract was awarded to a firm named K Anantha Rao and Co, based in Srikakulam. 'The wall in question was reportedly constructed in haste five days ago, and was asked to be completed before Chandanotsavam,' sources claimed. Outside the King George Hospital mortuary in Visakhapatnam, grieving families of the victims demanded accountability from politicians, officials, and the temple authorities. 'This was not a case of torrential rain. Water runoff from the hilltop seems to have undermined the weak foundation of the wall,' family members of the deceased alleged. 'We demand permanent government jobs, not outsourcing, and `1 crore ex gratia for each victim. The government cannot brush off its negligence with mere announcements,' they said. They further questioned the role of ministers who were reportedly assigned to oversee Chandanotsavam arrangements. 'How did they miss inspecting a newly constructed wall? What kind of oversight was this?' asked devotees waiting in the queue after the untoward incident. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, who was at the site since morning, told the media, 'I have personally inspected the queue lines two to three days ago. The incident is extremely unfortunate. An inquiry will be conducted to identify the contractor, engineer, and quality evaluator involved in the wall construction. All those responsible will be held accountable.' Anitha stated that despite all precautions taken by the temple authorities, the tragedy still occurred. 'A three-member committee has already been formed to probe the reasons behind the accident. Once the committee submits its report, legal action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence,' she added.
